The overall survival (OS) of patients with prostate cancer (PCa) who receive locally definitive therapy is generally better than that of patients who do not receive definitive therapy. There is no difference in the incidence of local recurrence or distant metastasis between treatment modalities. Because the prognosis of PCa is relatively good, many studies have focused on quality of life after treatment as an endpoint.

Article Synopsis
  • Recent changes in treating non-metastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer (nmCRPC) led to an observational study assessing the effectiveness of androgen receptor signaling inhibitors (ARSIs) as a first-line treatment for Japanese patients.
  • The study included 160 participants, with a median follow-up of 23 months, showing promising results: patients experienced a median progression-free survival of 26 months, but median overall survival was not reached.
  • Key factors affecting overall survival included time to castration-resistant prostate cancer (CRPC), prostate-specific antigen (PSA) levels at treatment initiation, and Geriatric Nutritional Risk Index (GNRI), helping to categorize patients into three prognostic groups with significantly different outcomes.

Background And Objective: Prostate cancer (PCa) is the most common cancer in men. High-risk PCa is associated with an increased risk of PCa-related death. The combined use of androgen deprivation therapy (ADT) is essential to improve oncological outcomes in patients with high-risk PCa, and relatively long-term ADT administration is preferred when radiotherapy is performed.

A 76-year-old man who was diagnosed with urothelial carcinoma (UC) in the bladder diverticulum was referred to our institution. The patient was diagnosed with muscle-invasive bladder cancer, which was confirmed by magnetic resonance imaging that showed tumor invasion into the fatty tissue surrounding the diverticulum. After two cycles of neoadjuvant gemcitabine and cisplatin, he underwent robot-assisted radical cystectomy (RARC) with pelvic lymph node dissection followed by intracorporeal ileal conduit.

Malignant tumors metastasizing to the bladder are uncommon, and bladder metastasis from uterine cancer is particularly rare. Several cases of bladder metastasis from malignant melanoma, gastric cancer, breast cancer, and renal cancer have been documented. However, to our knowledge, only four cases of bladder metastasis from endometrial cancer had been reported up until 2024.

Accurate diagnosis of the localization of prostate cancer (PCa) on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) remains a challenge. We aimed to assess discrepancy between the location of PCa pathologically diagnosed using surgical specimens and lesions indicated as possible PCa by the Prostate Imaging Reporting and Data System on MRI. The primary endpoint was the concordance rate between the site of probable clinically significant PCa (csPCa) identified using biparametric MRI (bpMRI) and location of PCa in the surgical specimen obtained using robot-assisted total prostatectomy.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to compare the outcomes of metastatic castration-sensitive prostate cancer patients receiving standard androgen deprivation therapy (ADT) versus those receiving ADT combined with a new androgen-receptor signaling inhibitor (ARSI) in Japan.
  • A retrospective analysis of 581 patients revealed that those on the combination therapy had longer prostate-specific antigen-progression-free survival (PSA-PFS), especially among high-risk patients, although overall survival rates were similar between both groups.
  • Key factors like high Gleason score and certain blood marker levels indicated worse PSA-PFS outcomes, allowing researchers to categorize patients into risk groups based on these predictors.

The abnormal glycocalyx (GCX) on the surface of cancer cells has been reported to be tall and aberrantly glycosylated and has been linked to the progression and spread of cancer-a finding also observed in bladder cancer. However, the characteristics of GCX in various types of human bladder cancer remain unknown, and herein, we aimed to provide information on the diversity of glycan components in the GCX of bladder cancers and to shed light on their characteristics. We used scanning electron microscopy and lanthanum staining to examine the surface GCX of human bladder carcinomas in three-dimensional images, showing the bulky GCX in some carcinomas.
