[A Case of Monomorphic Epitheliotropic Intestinal T-Cell Lymphoma Causing Perforation of the Small Intestine].

Monomorphic epitheliotropic intestinal T-cell lymphoma(MEITL)is very rare and aggressive subtype of lymphoma with poor prognosis. A 60-year-old man complaining of abdominal pain was underwent partial resection of the jejunum for panperitonitis with a small intestinal perforation. The histopathological and immunohistochemical findings led to the diagnosis of MEITL.

[Long-Term Survival from Gastric Cancer Treated with Radiotherapy for Distant Lymph Node Recurrence-A Case Report].

A 69-year-old man was diagnosed with advanced gastric cancer in the upper body of the stomach and underwent total gastrectomy with D2 lymph node dissection. At the diagnosis, the pathological stage was T2N3M0(Stage ⅢA). The patient underwent adjuvant chemotherapy with S-1 for a year.

[A Case of Goblet Cell Adenocarcinoma Incidentally Diagnosed after Appendectomy That Required Additional Bowel Resection with Lymph Nodes Dissection].

A 54-year-old male presented to the clinic, complaining of dull lower abdominal pain that started a day ago. There was a tenderness on right lower quadrant on palpation and abdominal computed tomography(CT)showed that dilated appendix with a diameter of 12 mm. The patient was diagnosed with acute appendicitis and laparoscopic appendectomy was performed on the same day.

Site of distant metastasis affects the prognosis with recurrent/metastatic head and neck squamous cell carcinoma patients treated with Nivolumab.

Background: Nivolumab is approved for the treatment of recurrent/metastatic head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (R/M HNSCC). However, the influence of the site of distant metastasis on the efficacy of immune checkpoint inhibitor in R/M HNSCC remains unclear. We investigated the prognosis of R/M HNSCC patients treated with nivolumab, focusing on the site of distant metastasis.

Cellular Anti-Inflammatory and Antioxidant Activities of Bamboo Leaf Extract and Its Constituent Coumaric Acid Methyl Ester.

Background: Hot water extract of (Kumazasa) leaves is commercially available and used as a dietary supplement or skincare cream. The extract possesses anti-inflammatory activity on the mouse atopic dermatitis model. To elucidate the mechanism of in vivo activity, we have studied the cellular anti-inflammatory and antioxidant activities of the extract and its constituents.

Evaluating the safety and efficiency of robotic dispensing systems.

Background: Although automated dispensing robots have been implemented for medication dispensing in Japan, their effect is yet to be fully investigated. In this study, we evaluated the effect of automated dispensing robots and collaborative work with pharmacy support staff on medication dispensing.

Methods: A robotic dispensing system integrating the following three components was established: (1) automated dispensing robot (Drug Station®), which is operated by pharmacy support staff, (2) automated dispensing robot for powdered medicine (Mini DimeRo®), and (3) bar-coded medication dispensing support system with personal digital assistance (Hp-PORIMS®).

A case report of adenosquamous carcinoma of the esophagogastric junction.

Background: Many types of tumors can arise in the esophagogastric junction (EGJ). Squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) arising from the esophageal epithelia, adenocarcinoma arising from the gastric mucosa, or Barrett's esophageal mucosa are frequently observed in the EGJ. However, adenosquamous carcinoma (ASC) has been rarely observed in this area.

SeV C Protein Plays a Role in Restricting Macrophage Phagocytosis by Limiting the Generation of Intracellular Double-Stranded RNA.

Macrophages play a central role in the innate immune response to respiratory viral infections through pro-inflammatory factor secretion and phagocytosis. However, as a countermeasure, viral pathogens have evolved virulence factors to antagonize macrophage function. In our recent analyses of murine macrophage cell lines, Sendai virus (SeV) accessory protein C inhibited the secretion of pro-inflammatory factors, and C gene-knockout SeV (SeVΔC) caused drastic morphological changes in RAW264.

[A Case of Multiple Metachronous Metastases from Hepatocellular Carcinoma to Thoracic Spine and Right Adrenal Invading Right Kidney with Tumor Thrombus in the Inferior Vena Cava That Was Treated with Chemotherapy, Radiotherapy, Intravascular Therapy, and Surgery].

For extrahepatic recurrence after primary hepatocellular carcinoma resection, molecular targeted therapy is the first- choice and no consensus is reached on the indication of surgical resection of extrahepatic metastasis. However, when the extrahepatic lesion extends to vena cava, tumor thrombus can cause acute pulmonary embolism that can lead to fatal consequences. Here, we experienced a case of multiple metachronous metastases from hepatocellular carcinoma to thoracic spine and right adrenal invading right kidney with tumor thrombus in the inferior vena cava.

Sendai virus C protein affects macrophage function, which plays a critical role in modulating disease severity during Sendai virus infection in mice.

Sendai virus (SeV) accessory protein C limits the generation of double-stranded RNAs, defective interfering RNAs, or both, during viral transcription and replication, thereby limiting interferon-β production. Our recent in vitro analyses on murine macrophage cell lines demonstrated that this protein also contributes to restricting macrophage function, including the production of nitric oxide (NO) and inflammatory cytokines in addition to interferon-β, in infected macrophages. This study showed that depletion of airway macrophages by clodronate-loaded liposomes led to the development of severe viral pneumonia in recombinant C gene-knockout SeV (SeV∆C)-infected mice, but did not modulate disease severity in wild-type SeV-infected mice.

Mean Differential Continuous Pulse Method for Accurate Optical Measurements of Light-Emitting Diodes and Laser Diodes.

Limited sources exist for the application of germicidal ultraviolet (GUV) radiation. Ultraviolet light-emitting diodes (UV-LEDs) have significantly improved in efficiency and are becoming another viable source for GUV. We have developed a mean differential continuous pulse method (M-DCP method) for optical measurements of light-emitting diodes (LEDs) and laser diodes (LDs).

Plasmacytoma is one of the most difficult types of leukemia to treat, and it often invades the bone down to the marrow resulting in the development of multiple myeloma. NF-κB is often constitutively activated, and promotes metastasis and drug resistance in neoplastic cells. The present study assessed the cellular anticancer activity of an NF-κB inhibitor, dehydroxymethylepoxyquinomicin (DHMEQ), on mouse plasmacytoma SP2/0 cells.

Evaluation of synchronous multiple primary superficial laryngo-pharyngeal cancers that were treated by endoscopic laryngo-pharyngeal surgery.

Objective: ndoscopic laryngopharyngeal surgery (ELPS) is a useful surgery for superficial cancers of the head and neck region, but it has not yet been well evaluated for synchronous multiple primary cancers (multiple primaries). The purpose of this study was to clarify the safety and usefulness of ELPS for patients with multiple superficial primary cancers in the head and neck region.

Methods: rom December 2009 to December 2016, 145patients with superficial head and neck cancers underwent ELPS.

Binding of liposomes composed of phosphatidylcholine to scavenger receptor class B type 1 and its modulation by phosphatidic acid in HEK293T cells.

In this study, we developed a method to analyze liposomal binding to a cell membrane receptor using fluorescence-labeled liposomes and demonstrated that scavenger class B type 1 (SR-B1) plays a crucial role in binding of liposomes containing phosphatidylcholine (PC) to HEK293T cell membrane and phosphatidic acid (PA) can modulate it. Site-directed mutagenesis of SR-B1 revealed that S112F and T175A mutations in its ectodomain abrogated binding and endocytosis of PC liposomes in HEK293T cells. K151A and K156A mutations attenuated their binding and endocytosis too.

A case of gastric cancer that developed thrombocytopenia during treatment with nivolumab.

A 72-year-old man was treated by two-regimen chemotherapies for unresectable advanced gastric cancer with metastatic lymph nodes near the pancreatic head, followed by the third-line chemotherapy using nivolumab (Nivo). Ten days after the two-course Nivo chemotherapy, grade 4 thrombocytopenia (TCP) occurred according to the Common Terminology Criteria for Adverse Events. He was treated by steroid and Helicobacter pylori (HP) eradication therapies.

[A Case of Type 4 Gastric Cancer with Peritoneal Dissemination Successfully Treated with Conversion Surgery after Intensive S-1 plus Oxaliplatin Chemotherapy].

S-1 plus oxaliplatin(SOX)chemotherapy is now widely used for the treatment of unresectable gastric cancer but there are few case reports about conversion surgery following SOX. Hereby, we report a case of type 4 gastric cancer with peritoneal dissemination successfully treated with conversion surgery after intensive SOX chemotherapy. A 69-year-old female was diagnosed of type 4 gastric cancer by upper endoscopy(por1, HER2 negative)and peritoneal disseminations were identified on left diaphragm and mesentery under direct vision.

Lung adenocarcinoma initially presenting as Trousseau's syndrome treated successfully with pembrolizumab: A case report.

A 60-year-old woman was urgently admitted to our hospital because of vertigo and left hemiplegia. Laboratory examination showed thrombocytopenia, high levels of D-dimer and carcinoembryonic antigen. Brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) revealed multiple bilateral cerebral infarctions.

Superior mediastinal paraganglioma initially suspected of being a mediastinal thyroid goiter.

Paraganglioma is a rare tumor arising from paraganglia. Few reports have described paragangliomas in the superior mediastinum. We report a case of superior mediastinal paraganglioma treated in our department.

Melanin concentration and depolarization metrics measurement by polarization-sensitive optical coherence tomography.

Imaging of melanin in the eye is important as the melanin is structurally associated with some ocular diseases, such as age-related macular degeneration. Although optical coherence tomography (OCT) cannot distinguish tissues containing the melanin from other tissues intrinsically, polarization-sensitive OCT (PS-OCT) can detect the melanin through spatial depolarization of the backscattered light from the melanin granules. Entropy is one of the depolarization metrics that can be used to detect malanin granules in PS-OCT and valuable quantitative information on ocular tissue abnormalities can be retrived by correlating entropy with the melanin concentration.

Reelin Supplementation Into the Hippocampus Rescues Abnormal Behavior in a Mouse Model of Neurodevelopmental Disorders.

In the majority of schizophrenia patients, chronic atypical antipsychotic administration produces a significant reduction in or even complete remission of psychotic symptoms such as hallucinations and delusions. However, these drugs are not effective in improving cognitive and emotional deficits in patients with schizophrenia. Atypical antipsychotic drugs have a high affinity for the dopamine D receptor, and a modest affinity for the serotonin 5-HT receptor.

A regulatory role of scavenger receptor class B type 1 in endocytosis and lipid droplet formation induced by liposomes containing phosphatidylethanolamine in HEK293T cells.

We have recently reported that phosphatidylethanolamine (PE)-containing liposomes are endocytosed and then induce lipid droplets (LDs) in HEK293T cells. In this study, we elucidated a mechanism responsible for endocytosis of PE-containing liposomes and induction of LDs. By using fluorescence-labeled liposomes and flow cytometry, we found that PE-containing liposomes were very efficiently internalized in HEK293T cells.

HLA-Matched Allogeneic iPS Cells-Derived RPE Transplantation for Macular Degeneration.

Immune attacks are key issues for cell transplantation. To assess the safety and the immune reactions after iPS cells-derived retinal pigment epithelium (iPS-RPE) transplantation, we transplanted HLA homozygote iPS-RPE cells established at an iPS bank in HLA-matched patients with exudative age-related macular degeneration. In addition, local steroids without immunosuppressive medications were administered.

Influence of human adipose stem cells on prostate cancer cell growth.

In a novel regenerative cell-based treatment developed by us for the patients with stress urinary incontinence, autologous adipose-derived stem cells (ASCs) are injected into the periurethral region and the external urethral sphincter. Since the candidates for this treatment included prostate cancer patients after radical prostatectomy, we investigated the effects of ASCs on prostate cancer cell proliferation and to confirm the feasibility of our therapeutic approach. The LNCaP (human prostate cancer cell line) cells and ASCs were co-cultured, and prostate-specific antigen (PSA) concentration in their culture medium supernatant was measured at 48 and 96 h.
