Introduction: Since the first report of a novel coronavirus infection caused by SARS-CoV-2 in late 2019, the infection has spread rapidly and had a significant impact on our lives. In the early stages of the COVID-19 pandemic, there was no adequate testing system in place, despite an urgent need for infection control measures in student dormitories.

Methods: We have been monitoring SARS-CoV-2 in wastewater as part of our infection control efforts in the university facilities since fall 2020.

Aim: Live two-way video, easily accessible from home via smartphones and other devices, is becoming a new way of providing psychiatric treatment. Background/aims: The frequency and details of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) complications in patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) remain unclear. This study aimed to clarify characteristics of NAFLD in patients with IBD.

Methods: We retrospectively identified and enrolled patients with IBD diagnosed with or without NAFLD by undergoing abdominal computed tomography (CT) at our institution between 2005 and 2020.

Perceived Future Outcomes of Unsuccessful Treatment and Their Association with Treatment Persistence Among Type-2 Diabetes Patients: A Cross-Sectional Content Analysis.

Introduction: Despite the known strong association between patients' knowledge of outcomes of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and treatment persistence, this knowledge in this patient population requires further clarification. The aim of our study was to reveal the perception of unsuccessful treatment outcomes among patients with T2DM and its association with treatment persistence by analysing answers to open-ended questions.

Methods: In this cross-sectional study, 106 patients with T2DM who lived in Fukushima Prefecture, Japan, had a medical record in the Fukushima National Health Insurance Organisation database and had no cognitive problems were enrolled by purposive sampling.

Resolution of Laryngeal Ulceration with Prednisolone Therapy in a Patient with Crohn's Disease.

A 23-year-old man diagnosed with Crohn's disease (CD) was treated with infliximab. He developed new-onset sore throat and dysphagia during admission, and nasopharyngoscopy revealed epiglottic ulceration. Laryngeal ulceration was considered as an extraintestinal manifestation of CD owing to treatment failure with antibiotics and hydrocortisone.

Development of a DNA aptamer that binds to the complementarity-determining region of therapeutic monoclonal antibody and affinity improvement induced by pH-change for sensitive detection.

Therapeutic monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) are successful biomedicines; however, evaluation of their pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics demands highly specific discrimination from human immunoglobulin G naturally present in the blood. Here, we developed a novel anti-idiotype aptamer (termed A14#1) with extraordinary specificity against the anti-vascular endothelial growth factor therapeutic mAb, bevacizumab. Structural analysis of the antibody-aptamer complex showed that several bases of A14#1 recognized only the complementarity determining region (CDR) of bevacizumab, thereby contributing to its extraordinary specificity.

Association between subjective economic status and refusal of life-prolonging treatment: a cross-sectional study using content analysis with stratified random sampling.

Introduction: Older adults tend to refuse life-prolonging treatment for various reasons, and it is important to respect their choice of treatment at the end-of-life stage. The present study examines the associations of subjective economic status and gender with reasons for refusal of life-prolonging treatment in older adults in general population.

Methods: In this cross-sectional study, using stratified random sampling, 1,595 older adults living in Koriyama City, Japan, as of 2016, completed self-administered questionnaires on subjective economic status and preference for life-prolonging treatment, with free-description regarding reasons for refusal.

Background/aims: Proteinase 3 antineutrophil cytoplasmic antibody (PR3-ANCA) is a serologic marker for granulomatosis with polyangiitis. Introduction: Future time perspective (FTP) means the capacity to foresee, anticipate, and plan for future desired outcomes, and it contributes to persistent treatment for type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). However, the components of FTP specific to T2DM patients have not been clarified. This study aimed to explore the components of FTP and to examine the associations between such components and persistent/impersistent diabetes treatment.

Introduction: The COVID-19 pandemic has had a profound impact on the mental health of people around the world. Anxiety related to infection, stress and stigma caused by the forced changes in daily life have reportedly increased the incidence and symptoms of depression, anxiety disorder and obsessive-compulsive disorder. Under such circumstances, telepsychiatry is gaining importance and attracting a great deal of attention.

A Green Light-Regulated T7 RNA Polymerase Gene Expression System for Cyanobacteria.

In this study, we developed a green light-regulated T7 RNA polymerase expression system (T7 RNAP system), to provide a novel and versatile high-expression system for cyanobacteria without using any chemical inducer, realizing high expression levels comparable with previously reported for recombinant gene expression in cyanobacteria. The T7 RNAP system was constructed and introduced into Synechocystis sp. PCC6803.

Urinary crystal formation and urothelial effects of pyroxasulfone administered to male rats.

Pyroxasulfone induced a low incidence of urinary bladder tumors in male rats in a 2-year bioassay at 1000 and 2000 ppm, with occasional urinary calculi. No increased incidence of tumors of any tissue occurred in female rats or in mice of either gender. We performed three short-term studies to evaluate early development of pyroxasulfone-induced urinary crystals and urothelial cytotoxicity with consequent regenerative proliferation.

We report a rare case of primary amelanotic malignant melanoma of the male urethra. A 65-year-old man with a urethral mass was referred to our hospital. A pathological diagnosis of a biopsy specimen revealed malignant melanoma.

Objective There are few reports on the outcomes of 12-week paritaprevir, ombitasvir, and ritonavir (PTV/OBV/r) treatment in real-world clinical settings. We aimed to evaluate the efficacy and safety of 12-week treatment with ritonavir-boosted paritaprevir and ombitasvir in patients with hepatitis C virus (HCV) genotype 1 infection in a real-world setting.
