Intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) is a cornerstone in managing male infertility, especially in obstructive azoospermia (OA) and non-obstructive azoospermia (NOA), necessitating sperm retrieval via testicular sperm extraction (TESE) or microdissection TESE (mTESE). However, the varied post-sperm extraction processing methods pose uncertainty regarding optimal approaches. To address this, a systematic review following preferred reporting items for systematic review and meta-analysis protocols (PRISMA-P) guidelines was conducted, identifying 16 relevant studies.

Human enteric viruses can remain infective in surface waters for extended periods of time, posing a public health risk. Microbial activity contributes to the inactivation of waterborne enteric viruses, but while individual bacteria-virus interactions have been characterized, the importance of microbial diversity remains unknown. Here, we experimentally manipulated the diversity of bacterial communities from Lake Geneva across three seasons using a dilution-to-extinction approach and monitored the inactivation and genome decay of echovirus 11, a member of the genus.

We describe a novel biosafety aerosol chamber equipped with state-of-the-art instrumentation for bubble-bursting aerosol generation, size distribution measurement, and condensation-growth collection to minimize sampling artifacts when measuring virus infectivity in aerosol particles. Using this facility, we investigated the effect of relative humidity (RH) in very clean air without trace gases (except ∼400 ppm CO) on the preservation of influenza A virus (IAV) infectivity in saline aerosol particles. We characterized infectivity in terms of 99%-inactivation time, , a metric we consider most relevant to airborne virus transmission.

We evaluated depression-related health care resource utilization and antidepressant prescription medication utilization among commercially insured men in the United States who underwent inflatable penile prosthesis (IPP) implantation between January 1, 2007 and December 31, 2020, and who received a depression diagnosis in the year preceding the IPP procedure. A total of 11,177 patients received an IPP during the index period, 808 of whom were diagnosed with depression. A statistically significant reduction in overall depression-related health care visits occurred from pre- to post-IPP, decreasing from 4.

Article Synopsis
  • Influenza A virus (IAV) spreads through exhaled droplets, and its stability is influenced by the concentration of NaCl and environmental factors during drying.
  • The study shows that IAV inactivation increases with NaCl concentration during evaporation, peaks at concentrations over 20 mol/(kg HO), and slows down significantly after efflorescence occurs.
  • Introduction of sucrose reduces IAV inactivation by lowering NaCl levels and providing protective effects, while a biophysical model accurately predicts inactivation rates based solely on NaCl molality.

Unlabelled: The composition of respiratory fluids influences the stability of viruses in exhaled aerosol particles and droplets, though the role of respiratory organics in modulating virus stability remains poorly understood. This study investigates the effect of organic compounds on the stability of influenza A virus (IAV) in deposited droplets. We compare the infectivity loss of IAV at different relative humidities (RHs) over the course of 1 h in 1-µL droplets consisting of phosphate-buffered saline (without organics), synthetic lung fluid, or nasal mucus (both containing organics).

Serine proteases are important environmental contributors of enterovirus biocontrol. However, the structural features of molecular interaction accounting for the susceptibility of enteroviruses to proteases remains unexplained. Here, we describe the molecular mechanisms involved in the recruitment of serine proteases to viral capsids.

Members of the phylum Gemmatimonadota can account for up to 10% of the phylogenetic diversity in bacterial communities. However, a detailed investigation of their cell biology and ecological roles is restricted by currently only six characterized species. By combining low-nutrient media, empirically determined inoculation volumes and long incubation times in a 96-well plate cultivation platform, we isolated two strains from a limnic sponge that belong to this under-studied phylum.

The cheetah is considered the fastest land animal, but studies on their skeletal muscle properties are scarce. Vastus lateralis biopsies, obtained from male and female cheetahs as well as humans, were analysed and compared for fibre type and size, and metabolism. Overall, cheetah muscle had predominantly type IIX fibres, which was confirmed by the myosin heavy chain isoform content (mean±s.

Aerosol transmission remains a major challenge for control of respiratory viruses, particularly those causing recurrent epidemics, like influenza A virus (IAV). These viruses are rarely expelled alone, but instead are embedded in a consortium of microorganisms that populate the respiratory tract. The impact of microbial communities and inter-pathogen interactions upon stability of transmitted viruses is well-characterized for enteric pathogens, but is under-studied in the respiratory niche.

No study has yet assessed the risk of developing erectile dysfunction (ED) after a diagnosis of long COVID, defined by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention as the persistence or presence of new symptoms at least 4 weeks after initial SARS-CoV-2 infection, when compared to those diagnosed with acute COVID or cases in which more severe treatment is required. To assess these risks, we queried the TriNetX COVID-19 Research Network from December 1st 2020 through June 2023. Men aged ≥ 18 diagnosed with long COVID were compared to those diagnosed with acute COVID and analyses were performed to compare men who were/were not hospitalized within 1 month of acute COVID diagnosis and men who did/did not need vasopressors.

Wastewater-based epidemiology offers a complementary approach to clinical case-based surveillance of emergent diseases and can help identify regions with infected people to prioritize clinical surveillance strategies. However, tracking emergent diseases in wastewater requires reliance on novel testing assays with uncertain sensitivity and specificity. Limited pathogen shedding may cause detection to be below the limit of quantification or bordering the limit of detection.

Article Synopsis
  • Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) are linked to issues like high nonadherence rates and sexual dysfunction, particularly among young adult men, but the exact relationship is not well understood.
  • A study surveyed 505 young men about their willingness to adhere to antidepressant treatment, revealing they preferred alternatives that spare sexual function, such as bupropion and mirtazapine, over SSRIs.
  • Findings suggest that sexual side effects significantly influence the likelihood of young men not sticking to their antidepressant regimen, highlighting the need for better treatment strategies that include options to minimize these side effects.
