Linear enamel hypoplasias (LEHs) are development defects appearing as lines or grooves on enamel surfaces. Forming when physiological stressors disrupt developing teeth, LEHs provide retrospective insight into stress experienced in early development. Here, LEHs in Cayo Santiago rhesus macaques (Macaca mulatta) were observed with respect to decade of birth, whether an individual was transferred from the free-ranging colony to the captive facility during probable crown formation periods, and matriline of birth.

Article Synopsis
  • This study investigates the connection between gut bacteria, specifically oral pathogens, and colorectal cancer (CRC), highlighting the role of Parvimonas micra and Fusobacterium nucleatum.
  • The research analyzed fecal samples from 275 CRC patients and 95 healthy controls using 16S rRNA sequencing, revealing significant differences in microbial composition linked to tumor location and microsatellite instability (MSI).
  • Findings indicate that certain bacteria like P. micra and F. nucleatum are more prevalent in CRC patients, suggesting their potential role in the disease's development and the need for further research on bacterial interactions in CRC progression.

Article Synopsis
  • Acne fulminans (AF) is a severe, inflammatory type of acne that typically appears in adolescents, featuring painful nodules and potentially leading to serious skin lesions and systemic symptoms like fever and joint pain.
  • The exact cause of AF is not well understood, but it may be linked to certain medications and often arises in teens beginning isotretinoin treatment.
  • Effective treatment generally involves a combination of prednisone and isotretinoin, with an emphasis on early diagnosis to reduce both immediate symptoms and the risk of permanent scarring; further research is needed to improve management strategies.

Images on the homepages of private practice dermatology websites often do not reflect the racial diversity of the metropolitan area in which each practice is located. A Google Maps scraper (Apify) was used to identify websites for private practices in 27 United States metropolitan areas selected from the 2020 U.S.

Human inborn errors of immunity include rare disorders entailing functional and quantitative antibody deficiencies due to impaired B cells called the common variable immunodeficiency (CVID) phenotype. Patients with CVID face delayed diagnoses and treatments for 5 to 15 years after symptom onset because the disorders are rare (prevalence of ~1/25,000), and there is extensive heterogeneity in CVID phenotypes, ranging from infections to autoimmunity to inflammatory conditions, overlapping with other more common disorders. The prolonged diagnostic odyssey drives excessive system-wide costs before diagnosis.

Article Synopsis
  • The study compared responses from American Indian and/or Alaska Native adolescents using two tools, Skindex-29 and Skindex-Teen, to evaluate how skin conditions affect their quality of life.
  • Conducted during regional powwows in Denver, Colorado, the research involved 86 adolescents, most of whom self-identified as American Indian and/or Alaska Native, highlighting the lack of representation in dermatology research for this group.
  • Results showed that a significant number of respondents experienced a negative impact on their quality of life due to skin issues, with older adolescents reporting greater emotional and quality-of-life challenges related to dermatological conditions.

Objectives: This brief communication documents the prevalence of maxillary central incisor talon cusps in Cayo Santiago rhesus monkeys (Macaca mulatta) and assesses whether talon cusp presence occurs at equivalent frequencies across matrilines.

Materials And Methods: The data on cusp presence vs. absence were analyzed by logistic regression in 170 monkeys (82 females, 78 males) from seven different matrilines.

Pediatric teledermatology rapidly expanded with the COVID-19 pandemic, and the impacts of this expansion on patients' access to care have not yet been entirely defined. In this retrospective study of 3027 patients in an academic pediatric dermatology practice, patients who identified as having a primary language other than English were less likely to access pediatric dermatology care during the COVID lockdown. This study did not identify a significant or meaningful difference in age, geography, socioeconomic status, ethnicity, or race between patients who were offered pediatric dermatology care that was either in-person or via synchronous telehealth.

Importance: Qualitative studies serve as a tool for dermatologists and researchers in dermatology to engage with and understand perspectives of populations with different cultures and backgrounds.

Objective: To assess (1) current approaches to qualitative dermatologic research and (2) the publication trends of these studies with the aim to inform researchers regarding qualitative research and its significance and applicability in the field of dermatology.

Evidence Review: A scoping review was conducted in which PubMed and CINAHL Plus were searched using dermatology AND qualitative, dermatology, and 7 qualitative methods terms.

Background: Schools are high-risk settings for SARS-CoV-2 transmission, but necessary for children's educational and social-emotional wellbeing. Previous research suggests that wastewater monitoring can detect SARS-CoV-2 infections in controlled residential settings with high levels of accuracy. However, its effective accuracy, cost, and feasibility in non-residential community settings is unknown.

Objectives: To describe skin disease prevalence, access to dermatologic care, and teledermatology interest among American Indians and Alaska Natives.

Methods: Data were collected via self-report surveys administered in person at two community powwows in Denver, Colorado in 2021 and 2022.

Results: Most American Indian and/or Alaska Native respondents (94.

Introduction: After contracting COVID-19, many people have continued to experience various symptoms for several weeks and months, even after a mild acute phase. These people with ‘long COVID’ faced difficulties when confronted with the healthcare system.

Purpose Of Research: In order to better understand their experience, we supplemented the information obtained in an online survey with a mixed qualitative approach based on 33 individual interviews and discussions with 101 participants in a forum in March 2021.

Background: Intensive care unit (ICU) nurses are at an increased risk of burnout and may have an intention-to-leave their jobs. The COVID-19 pandemic may increase this risk.

Objective: The objective of this study was to describe the prevalence of burnout risk and intention-to-leave the job and nursing profession among ICU nurses and to analyse the relationships between these variables and the work environment after two years of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Background: Injuries in alpine skiing often affect the lower extremities, in particular the knee joint and lower leg. In addition to conventional radiological diagnostics, CT and, in the case of fractures of the knee joint area, MRI also play an important role. In the case of tibial head fractures, especially if there has been a dislocation mechanism, there is an increased risk of vascular and nerve injuries.

Background: After almost 2 years of fighting against SARS-CoV-2 pandemic, the number of patients enduring persistent symptoms long after acute infection is a matter of concern. This set of symptoms was referred to as "long COVID", and it was defined more recently as "Post COVID-19 condition" by the World health Organization (WHO). Although studies have revealed that long COVID can manifest whatever the severity of inaugural illness, the underlying pathophysiology is still enigmatic.

Article Synopsis
  • Monitoring SARS-CoV-2 on surfaces can help identify past exposure, especially in places like hospitals and schools, by detecting viral RNA left by infected individuals.
  • A study collected samples from isolation housing units to investigate where SARS-CoV-2 accumulates, finding high viral loads on frequently touched surfaces like light switches but also on untouched ones like floors.
  • The bacterial community in these environments seems to predict the presence of SARS-CoV-2, suggesting a potential link between certain bacterial types and higher viral detection.

Disparities in access to, use of and delivery of somatic health care contribute to widening gaps in morbidity and mortality between psychiatric patients and the general population. We conducted a qualitative semi-structured interview study with psychiatric patients and health professionals from different psychiatric care settings to understand these poor physical health outcomes. Optimal somatic follow-up of patients with severe mental illness seems to be hampered by (1) provider-related elements (attitude, training, experiences); (2) organisational aspects (equipment, infrastructure, staff, pharmacy, communication networks); (3) psychiatric patient-related elements and (4) financial barriers.
