Large numbers of anisakid nematodes identified as Raphidascaris (Sprentascaris) hypostom (Petter et Cassone, 1984) were collected from the stomach and intestine of armoured catfishes P leco stomus albopunctatus, P. commersoni, P. derbyi, and Ancistrus cirrhosus (all representing new host records) from the three water reservoirs, Salto Osório, Salto Santiago and Passo Fundo, in southern Brazil.

A versatile waveform generator for testing neuroelectric signal processors.

A multi-channel waveform generator was designed for testing neuroelectric signal processors. Smooth transient signals that resemble action potentials or evoked potentials are generated by a second order switched capacitor filter excited by brief rectangular pulses. The choice of an integrated circuit switched capacitor filter simplified the design by circumventing some of the disadvantages of conventional active filters.

Carrier-mediated transport of monoiodotyrosine out of thyroid cell lysosomes.

Monoiodotyrosine (MIT) crosses the lysosomal membrane of rat FRTL-5 thyroid cells by a carrier-mediated process. In egress studies, MIT lost from inside lysosomes was quantitatively recovered outside lysosomes as MIT, indicating that the compound was transported intact across the lysosomal membrane. In uptake studies, [125I]MIT entry required intact lysosomes and exhibited saturation kinetics.

Dendritic transformations on random synaptic inputs as measured from a neuron's spike train--modeling and simulation.

Extracellular spike trains recorded from central nervous system neurons reflect the random activations from a multitude of presynaptic cells making contacts mainly on the extensive dendritic trees. The dendritic potential variations are propagated towards the trigger zone where action potentials are generated. In this paper, two dendritic propagation modes are modeled: passive and quasi-active.

A basic reason for undertaking these studies was to further our knowledge of the structure and function of the TSH receptor as well as its interaction with other receptors on thyroid cells. The multiplicity of observations suggests the approach is bearing fruit, does not provide a simple answer, and can have pitfalls. We hope they may also contribute to understanding the structure and function of autoantigens in Graves' disease and glycoprotein hormone receptors in general.

Detection of genotoxic substances in cancer patients receiving antineoplastic drugs.

A short-term bacterial mutation test, the SOS Chromotest, has been used to detect the excretion in urine of genotoxic metabolites of antineoplastic drugs administered to cancer patients. In this test, the damage to the DNA of the test bacteria is expressed by the production of beta-galactosidase, which can be quantitatively assessed and is proportional to the concentration of the drug. Kinetic curves of excretion for adriamycin, bleomycin, dacarbazine, cis-platinum and vincristine and their mixtures have been constructed from standard curves relating the intensity of the beta-galactosidase response to the concentration of drugs dissolved in normal urine.

[Comparative study of helminth parasites of fishes from the Mogi Guassu river, collected during expeditions between 1927 and 1985].

This paper concerns the parasitism of Nematoda, Trematoda, Acanthocephala and Cestoda from 1027 fishes of 45 species from Mogi Guassu river, examined in the years 1927, 1946, 1947, 1962, 1983 and 1985 as a contribution to the knowledge of the parasitological fauna in 58 years. Thirty two species of nematodes, 21 of trematodes, 3 of acanthocephalans and 2 of cestodes are reported. New hosts are presented for the nematodes Cucullanus pinnai, Spirocamallanus inopinatus and Travnema travnema, for the trematode Pararhipidocotyle jeffersoni and for the acanthocephalan Gorytocephalus spectabilis.

EMC virus infection in baboons as a model for studies on antiviral substances.

EMC virus causes a lethal infection in baboon monkeys within 4-8 days following subcutaneous injection with 10(4)-10(8) pfu of virus. The infection is accompanied by viremia, invasion of heart muscle and of brain. Monkeys infected with 10(6) pfu of EMC virus were treated with human leukocyte interferon.

Monoclonal antibody studies defining the origin and properties of autoantibodies in Graves' disease.

The present report summarizes experiments with monoclonal antibodies to the TSH receptor. The data provide further insight into the TSH receptor structure and into the basis of autoimmune antibodies implicated in the pathogenesis of Graves' disease. They resolve many clinical questions and provide new approaches to enhance our understanding of autoimmune disease.

Use of chicken and rabbit antibodies in a solid phase protein A radioimmunossay for virus detection.

A new rapid indirect solid phase radioimmunoassay was developed for the detection of Sindbis virus. Chicken antibodies were adsorbed onto wells in microplates to serve as 'capture antibodies' and rabbit antibodies were used as the second antibody. 125I-labelled protein A that does not bind to chicken antibodies, but binds firmly to rabbit antibodies was used as the tracer.

Gastric acid and pancreatic polypeptide responses to modified sham feeding: indication of an increased basal vagal tone in a subgroup of duodenal ulcer patients.
