Unlabelled: The integration of olfactory and spatial information is critical for guiding animal behavior. The lateral entorhinal cortex (LEC) is reciprocally interconnected with cortical areas for olfaction and the hippocampus and thus ideally positioned to encode odor-place associations. Here, we used mini-endoscopes to record neural activity in the mouse piriform cortex (PCx) and LEC.

Research suggests that Muslim women wearing the hijab may be particularly vulnerable to the experiences of stigmatization as the hijab represents a dominant marker of "otherness." Using the relational demography perspective, this paper explored the viewpoints of hijab and non-hijab-wearing Muslim women in Delhi regarding the different forms of discrimination and/or social isolation they may have experienced. Thematic analysis was used to explore the participant's narratives, gathered by means of six focus group discussions (n = 38).

Emerging in vivo evidence suggests that repeated muscle contraction, or exercise, impacts peripheral nerves. However, the difficulty of isolating the muscle-specific impact on motor neurons in vivo, as well as the inability to decouple the biochemical and mechanical impacts of muscle contraction in this setting, motivates investigating this phenomenon in vitro. This study demonstrates that tuning the mechanical properties of fibrin enables longitudinal culture of highly contractile skeletal muscle monolayers, enabling functional characterization of and long-term secretome harvesting from exercised tissues.

Article Synopsis
  • - Coagulation factor XII (FXII) is linked to thrombosis and inflammation and is found in increased levels in diabetes and diabetic kidney disease (DKD), but its specific role in DKD was unclear until now.
  • - The study reveals that FXII is present in kidney tubular cells, correlating with kidney dysfunction in DKD patients; mice lacking FXII showed protection against kidney damage from high blood sugar.
  • - FXII promotes cell damage through a signaling pathway involving uPAR and integrin β1, leading to oxidative stress and cell aging; blocking these pathways may provide new diagnostic and treatment options for DKD and similar diseases.

Article Synopsis
  • Low molecular weight heparins (LMWH) are used in pregnancy to prevent or treat thromboembolic events and may have protective effects against preeclampsia, although their use in this context is debated.
  • Recent research shows that LMWH can reduce pregnancy loss and inflammation-related activation of the NLRP3 inflammasome in trophoblasts, which are crucial for a healthy pregnancy.
  • The mechanism involves LMWH activating the heparin-binding epidermal growth factor (HBEGF) pathway, which prevents inflammasome activation and could provide a rationale for using LMWH in managing preeclampsia.
