While traditionally considered a deleterious effect in quantum dot spin qubits, the spin-orbit interaction is recently being revisited as it allows for rapid coherent control by on-chip AC electric fields. For electrons in bulk silicon, spin-orbit coupling (SOC) is intrinsically weak, however, it can be enhanced at surfaces and interfaces, or through atomic placement. Here it is showed that the strength of the spin-orbit coupling can be locally enhanced by more than two orders of magnitude in the manybody wave functions of multi-donor quantum dots compared to a single donor, reaching strengths so far only reported for holes or two-donor system with certain symmetry.

Despite a recent shift toward methylammonium (MA)-free lead-halide perovskites for perovskite solar cells, high-efficiency formamidinium lead iodide (FAPbI) devices still often require methylammonium chloride (MACl) as an additive, which evaporates away during the annealing process. In this article, it is shown that the residual MA, however, triggers thermal instability. To investigate the possibility of an optimal concentration of MA that may improve thermal stability, the intrinsic thermal stability of pure FA, FA-rich, MA-rich, and pure MA perovskite films (FAMAPbI, FAMA) is studied.

Nuclear spin polarization plays a crucial role in quantum information processing and quantum sensing. In this work, we demonstrate a robust and efficient method for nuclear spin polarization with boron vacancy (V_{B}^{-}) defects in hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) using ground-state level anticrossing (GSLAC). We show that GSLAC-assisted nuclear polarization can be achieved with significantly lower laser power than excited-state level anticrossing, making the process experimentally more viable.

This review explores the complex relationship between social determinants of health and the biology of chronic wounds associated with diabetes mellitus, with an emphasis on racial/ethnic disparities. Chronic wounds pose significant healthcare challenges, often leading to severe complications for millions of people in the United States, and disproportionally affect African American, Hispanic, and Native American individuals. Social determinants of health, including economic stability, access to healthcare, education, and environmental conditions, likely influence stress, weathering, and nutrition, collectively shaping vulnerability to chronic diseases, such as obesity and DM, and an elevated risk of chronic wounds and subsequent lower extremity amputations.

Imaging with multiple modalities can maximise the information gained from the analysis of a single sample. probes for optical fluorescence and X-ray fluorescence microscopy based on brominated 4-amino-1,8-naphthalimide and BODIPY scaffolds have been successfully designed and synthesised. Herein we show that these prototype probes, based on each of these scaffolds, can be imaged in two different cancer cell lines, and that the respective optical fluorescence and X-ray fluorescence signals are well correlated in these images.

Spins confined to point defects in atomically thin semiconductors constitute well-defined atomic-scale quantum systems that are being explored as single-photon emitters and spin qubits. Here, we investigate the in-gap electronic structure of individual sulfur vacancies in molybdenum disulfide (MoS) monolayers using resonant tunneling scanning probe spectroscopy in the Coulomb blockade regime. Spectroscopic mapping of defect wave functions reveals an interplay of local symmetry breaking by a charge-state-dependent Jahn-Teller lattice distortion that, when combined with strong (≃100 meV) spin-orbit coupling, leads to a locking of an unpaired spin-1/2 magnetic moment to the lattice at low temperature, susceptible to lattice strain.

The frequently multidrug-resistant bacterial pathogen is a leading cause of nosocomial infections, including ventilator-associated pneumonia, such that the World Health Organization and US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have declared it a top priority candidate for novel drug development. Nearly all clinical strains express a thick surface polysaccharide capsule that protects against desiccation, host defenses, and disinfectants. The COVID-19 pandemic led to an initial increase in the incidence of carbapenem-resistant Enterobacterales (CRE) from clinical cultures in South-East Asia hospitals, which was unsustained as the pandemic progressed. Monocytes (Mo) and macrophages (Mφ) play important roles in the function of tissues, organs, and systems of all animals during homeostasis, infection, injury, and disease. For decades, conventional wisdom has dictated that Mo and Mφ are end-stage cells that do not proliferate and that Mφ accumulation in tissues is the result of infiltration of Mo from the blood and subsequent differentiation to Mφ. However, reports from the early 1900s to the present describe evidence of Mo and Mφ proliferation in different tissues and contexts.
