[Recurrent Esophageal Cancer Showing Good Response to Nivolumab in a Super-Elderly Patient-A Case Report].

A 91-year-old man with thoracic esophageal cancer(pT3N1M0, pStage Ⅲ)and gastric cancer(pT1b2N0M0, pStage ⅠA)underwent esophagectomy. Three years and 4 months postoperatively, chest computed tomography revealed a mass shadow near the aortic arch. Upper gastrointestinal endoscopy revealed a submucosal tumor-like lesion on the left wall of the gastric tube, which was identified as recurrent esophageal cancer.

Predictors of Delayed Recovery in Japanese Patients With Whiplash-Associated Disorders: The Role of Initial Catastrophizing and Disability Levels.

Background Whiplash-associated disorders are sequelae of traffic accidents that frequently result in sustained pain and disability due to a broader spectrum of symptoms than typical neck pain. Several studies have used the length of time from injury to the completion of insurance claims as a measure of recovery time for patients with whiplash-associated disorders. However, studies on the initial factors in patients whose treatment exceeds 90 days are lacking.

Differential phosphorylation of two serine clusters in mouse HORMAD1 during meiotic prophase I progression.

Mouse HORMAD1 is a phospho-protein involved in multiple functions during meiotic prophase I. To obtain insight into the significance of its phosphorylation, we generated phospho-specific antibodies against two serine residues, Ser307 and Ser378, representing each of two serine clusters in mouse HORMAD1. The Ser307 phosphorylation is detectable from early leptotene substage in both wild-type and Spo11 spermatocytes, indicating that Ser307 is a primary and SPO11-independent phosphorylation site.

Aquaporin-5 (AQP5) water channel, transmembrane protein 16A (TMEM16A) Ca-activated Cl channel, and Na-K-2Cl cotransporter (NKCC1) are membrane proteins on salivary gland acinar cells that function in watery saliva secretion. We examined their expression changes in rat parotid glands under reduced mastication. Rats were either fed regular chow as a control group, fasted for 48 hr or fed a liquid diet for 48 hr or 1 week to reduce mastication.

Differences in Improvement of Physical Function in Older Adults with Long-Term Care Insurance with and without Falls: A Retrospective Cohort Study.

(1) Background: This study examined the differences in changes in physical function with and without falls after daycare use among frail older adults with long-term care insurance (LTCI). (2) Methods: In this retrospective cohort study, 82 of 96 consecutive daycare center users met the inclusion criteria. The participants were divided into two groups based on the presence or absence of falls 6-12 months after use.

The significance of information and communication technology education via tablets in college of physical therapy.

[Purpose] This study aimed to clarify whether collaborative learning could be promoted via information and communication technology education using tablets at college of physical therapy. [Participants and Methods] An online survey was conducted to evaluate collaborative learning among 81 first-year students at the Department of Physical Therapy actively using tablets in classes (six specific categories). [Results] The Friedman test had significant results, and a significant primary effect was observed between each questionnaire item.

Humans show distinct social behaviours when we recognise social similarity in opponents that are members of the same social group. However, little attention has been paid to the role of social similarity in non-human animals. In the Wistar subject rats, the presence of an unfamiliar Wistar rat mitigated stress responses, suggesting the importance of social similarity in this stress-buffering phenomenon.

Small bowel tumors presenting with hemorrhagic shock require urgent treatment with angiographic embolization to achieve hemostasis. Capsule endoscopy and double-balloon endoscopy are useful for localizing the tumor, diagnosis, and guiding surgery.

We hypothesized that age-related changes in sensory function might be reflected by a modulation of the blood flow response associated with tactile sensation. The aim of the present study was to clarify how the blood flow response of the fingers during concentrated finger perception is affected by aging. We measured the tactile-pressure threshold of the distal palmar pad of the index finger and skin blood flow in the finger (SBF) during Braille reading performed under blind conditions in young ( = 27) and older ( = 37) subjects.

Infant car seat use in Japan after the antepartum distribution of an educational leaflet: A prospective, nonrandomized controlled trial with a questionnaire survey.

To determine whether an antepartum educational leaflet distributed to parents before infant delivery affected the rate of infant car-seat (ICS) use 1 month after delivery, because to the best of our knowledge, only few reports have evaluated systematic attempts to improve the rate of always ICS use by mothers driving infants A multicenter questionnaire survey targeting pregnant Japanese women seeking antenatal care at the outpatient clinics of eight hospitals was designed. Women enrolled during the first half of the study period did not receive leaflets describing ICS safety guidelines (control group). Women enrolled during the latter half of the study period received the leaflet between gestational week 35 and 37 (intervention group).

Background: Prolonged wheelchair sitting is known to lead to venous stasis and results in leg edema.

Objective: To clarify how a dynamic cushion affects leg edema in people with spinal cord injuries (SCI) evoked by wheelchair sitting, we measured the changes in leg volume induced during wheelchair sitting with a dynamic air cushion or a static cushion.

Immunotherapy for cancer cells induced by interfering with PD-1/PD-L1 engagement via check-point blockades was initiated by tumour-specific PD-1 CD8 cytotoxic T lymphocytes (CTLs) within a tumour mass and eliminate the tumour. Here, we used C57BL/6 (B6) mice implanted with the syngeneic hepatoma cell line Hepa1-6-1, and confirmed that the dendritic cells (DCs) within Hepa1-6-1 tumour mass were tolerogenic with downmodulated co-stimulatory molecules by tumour-derived factors. Although Hepa1-6-1 cells did not prime tumour-specific CTLs within the tumour, specific CTLs primed in the regional lymph nodes seemed to be invaded into the tumour mass.

Long-term Pilocarpine Treatment Improves Salivary Flow in Irradiated Mice.

Radiation therapy for head and neck cancer frequently causes salivary gland dysfunction. Pilocarpine is a clinically approved and effective drug that induces saliva secretion, thereby keeping the oral mucosa moist and reducing discomfort in patients, but the effect is transient. We expected that this drug also has beneficial long-term effects that maintain the integrity of salivary glands by reducing, for instance, apoptosis.

Purpose: Epicardial adipose tissue (EAT) is associated with atrial fibrillation. We investigated the effect of EAT on postoperative atrial fibrillation (POAF) after cardiac surgery.

Single-port laparoscopic-assisted resection for a large abdominal cystic lymphangioma: a case report.

Background: We report the case of a young woman with a large abdominal cystic lymphangioma that was successfully resected using single-port laparoscopic-assisted cystectomy. This avoided the need for a large surgical incision, as would result during conventional laparotomy.

Case Presentation: A 17-year-old young woman was admitted to our hospital complaining of abdominal pain that had persisted for 3 days.

Successful abdominal wound closure for treatment of severe peritonitis using negative pressure wound therapy with continuous mesh fascial traction: a case report.

Background: Surgery for severe peritonitis often entails difficult wound closure and may require open abdominal management due to gut edema and/or concern of abdominal compartment syndrome. Negative pressure wound therapy (NPWT) is known to have good outcomes for wound closure after surgery for severe peritonitis. NPWT with continuous mesh fascial traction may result in even better outcomes, especially for fascial closure.
