Gastrointestinal Stromal Tumor Associated with Neurofibromatosis Type 1 Simulating a Neurofibrosarcoma in a Black African Adult Patient.

Gastrointestinal stromal tumor (GIST) is the most prevalent mesenchymal tumor encountered in patients with neurofibromatosis type I (NF1). This association is rarely reported in black African adult patients. Clinical signs such as abdominal pain, intestinal bleeding, and palpable abdominal nodules may contribute to the diagnosis of GIST.

Effects of high-fat diets on inflammation and antioxidant status in rats : comparison between palm olein and olive oil.

Palm olein (PO) and olive oil (OO) are widely consumed in the world. PO is considered harmful to health, whereas OO is considered healthy. The aim of the study was to compare the effects of consumption of these oils on antioxidant status and inflammation in rats.

Chronic viral hepatitis, HIV infection and Non-Hodgkin lymphomas in West Africa, a case-control study.

Non-Hodgkin lymphomas (NHL) are underestimated causes of cancer in West Africa where chronic viral hepatitis and HIV are endemic. While the association with HIV infection has already been characterized, limited information is available on the association between chronic viral hepatitis and NHL in sub-Saharan Africa. A case-control study was conducted in referral hospitals of Abidjan (Cote d'Ivoire) and Dakar (Senegal).

Impact of diets rich in olive oil, palm oil or lard on myokine expression in rats.

It has recently emerged that myokines may be an important skeletal muscle adaptive response to obesogenic diets in sedentary subjects (who do not exercise). This study aimed to assess the influence of various high fat (HF) diets rich in either crude palm oil (cPO), refined palm oil (rPO), olive oil (OO) or lard on the modulation of myokine gene expression in the gastrocnemius. Five groups of 8 rats were each fed HF or control diet for 12 weeks.

Introduction: The diagnosis of chronic myeloid leukemia is based on the presence of translocation t(9,22). Additional cytogenetic abnormalities may exist at diagnosis and have prognostic value. The authors evaluated the relationship between these additional chromosomal abnormalities, clinical presentation, and therapeutic response.

Subclinical Cardiac Dysfunction Is Associated With Extracardiac Organ Damages.

Several studies conducted in America or Europe have described major cardiac remodeling and diastolic dysfunction in patients with sickle cell disease (SCD). We aimed at assessing cardiac involvement in SCD in sub-Saharan Africa where SCD is the most prevalent. In Cameroon, Mali and Senegal, SCD patients and healthy controls of the CADRE study underwent transthoracic echocardiography if aged ≥10 years.

Introduction: Preventing mother-to-child transmission (PMTCT) of HIV decreases new HIV infections in children. The objectives of our study were to describe the sociodemographic and obstetric characteristics of the patients of a protocol for the PMTCT of HIV-1 in Sylvanus Olympio Teaching Hospital.

Methods: We conducted a prospective cross-sectional descriptive study of the follow-up cohort type in the PMTCT siteof Sylvanus Olympio Teaching Hospital.

Isolation and chemoenzymatic treatment of glycoalkaloids from green, sprouting and rotting Solanum tuberosum potatoes for solanidine recovery.

The estimation of glycoalkaloids in the flesh of different types of decayed potatoes was evaluated. The results showed that turned green and also sprouting or rotting potato flesh contain high amounts of toxic solanine and chaconine, exceeding by 2-5-fold the recommended limit, and ranging from 2578±86mg/kg to 5063±230mg/kg of dry weight potato flesh. For safety consideration, these decayed potatoes should be systematically set aside.

Liver regeneration following repeated reversible portal vein embolization in an experimental model.

Background: Portal vein embolization (PVE) is used routinely to prevent postoperative liver failure as a result of anticipated insufficient future liver remnant volume following resection. The authors have recently developed a technique for temporary PVE. The aim of this study was to assess the effect of repeated reversible PVE on hepatocyte proliferation and subsequent liver hypertrophy in rodents.

[Chronic renal failure in sickle cell disease: A retrospective analysis of 100Â adults sickle cell patients from black Africa].

The prevalence of chronic renal failure (CRF) in sickle cell disease (SCD) patients could vary from one country to another depending on the modalities of management. The aim of the present study was to appreciate the epidemiology of CRF in SCD patients from black Africa in order to search for promoting factors. One hundred SCD adult patients have been considered for the study.

Cycles of Quaternary climatic change are assumed to be major drivers of African rainforest dynamics and evolution. However, most hypotheses on past vegetation dynamics relied on palaeobotanical records, an approach lacking spatial resolution, and on current patterns of species diversity and endemism, an approach confounding history and environmental determinism. In this context, a comparative phylogeographical study of rainforest species represents a complementary approach because Pleistocene climatic fluctuations may have left interpretable signatures in the patterns of genetic diversity within species.

Imatinib Mesylate Effectiveness in Chronic Myeloid Leukemia with Additional Cytogenetic Abnormalities at Diagnosis among Black Africans.

Imatinib mesylate provides good results in the treatment of CML in general. But what about the results of this treatment in CML associated with additional cytogenetic abnormalities at diagnosis among black Africans? For this, we retrospectively studied 27 cases of CML associated with additional cytogenetic abnormalities, diagnosed in the department of clinical hematology of the University Hospital of Yopougon in Côte d'Ivoire, from May 2005 to October 2011. The age of patients ranged from 13 to 68 years, with a mean age of 38 years and a sex ratio of 2.

[Managing pain in children with cancer in Africa: a survey from the French-African Pediatric Oncology group].

Introduction: The French-African Pediatric Oncology group (GFAOP) has contributed to a significant improvement in the prognosis of pediatric cancers in Africa through the development of therapeutic protocols adapted to local conditions. In parallel, the development of supportive care such as pain management, is now a major priority of our group.

Objective: The main objective of this study was to evaluate the management of pain in children with cancer in sub-Saharan Africa.

[Interest of microalbuminuria in preventing kidney damage during systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) under corticoid therapy].

This study aimed to evaluate the benefits of microalbuminuria in preventing kidney damage in systemic lupus erythemathosus. This was a prospective study of 6 months has focused on 25 patients of both sexes aged over 14 with SLE whose diagnosis was based on the criteria of the American College of Rheumatology, having a negative proteinuria at the dipstick (Ketodiastix(®)) and a balance sheet normal renal (creatinine and uraemia normal). Each month, samples of venous blood were achieved at the elbow in patients fasted for the night (12pm).

Isolation of SSR markers for two African tropical tree species, Erythrophleum suaveolens and E. ivorense (Caesalpinioideae).

Premise Of The Study: To characterize the level of genetic diversity and gene fl ow, as well as to identify unambiguously two African tropical tree species, Erythrophleum ivorense and E. suaveolens , we have developed a set of nuclear SSR (Simple Sequence Repeats) markers.

Methods And Results: Nine SSRs that display polymorphism in both species were identified.

This lymphoma was marked by its high sensitivity to chemotherapy in comparison to Sporadic Burkitt lymphoma. In this study, we evaluated the treatment response and survival of patients with CMA protocol.

[Prevalence of ketotic hypoglycaemia among schoolchildren in the village of Ahoué in Côte-d'Ivoire].

To determine the prevalence of ketotic hypoglycemia among schoolchildren, a descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted in preschools and schools in rural areas that involved 102 schoolchildren, from 4 to 7 years old, comprised 51 girls and 51 boys. Index WHZ was used to evaluate the children's nutritional status. The sampling was obtained by a drop of capillary blood in the pulp of the finger.

This study reports biochemical composition and morphological aspect of gallstones as investigated by spectroscopy IR method. Participants were 24 patients composed of 12 males and 12 females who underwent cholecystectomy with age mean of 44.8 years.

[Interest of antioxidants in the care of the patients infected by the HIV: the experience of long term administration of Alternanthera pungens herb tea].

Unlabelled: The objective of this study was to evaluate the interest of regular consumption of an antioxidant-containing herb tea in the care of HIV-patients. We conducted a 24 month prospective study in 30 patients clinically asymptomatic, infected by the VIH1, with a rate of CD4 above 200/mm3, and naive of any antiretroviral treatment. Every patient received a supplementation in antioxidants by drinking every two days during twelve monthsherb tea issued from Alternanthera pungens.

[Prognosis of post-operative digestive fistulas in Chu de Yopougon: Abidjan/Cote d'Ivoire].

Burkitt Lymphoma is the most frequent lymphoma of childhood in West Africa. The main localisations are facial and abdominal. In this study, the authors describe the case of a sub-cutaneous localisation of a Burkitt to a seven years old boy.
