Background: More and more patients need complex care, especially the elderly. For various reasons, this is becoming increasingly difficult. The onus is essentially on family physicians to provide this care and family medicine residency programs should therefore prepare their residents for this task.

This narrative review summarizes published studies on diagnostic examinations and therapeutic interventions for phagophobia. The electronic databases Embase, PubMed, PsycINFO(®), and The Cochrane Library were used. The literature search was limited to publications in the English, German, French, Spanish, or Dutch language.
