This paper describes a non-invasive remote temperature measurement technique integrated with a biomechatronic surgery system devised in our laboratory and named FUSBOT (Focal Ultrasound Surgery RoBOT). FUSBOTs use High-Intensity Focused Ultrasound (HIFU) for ablation of cancers/tumors and targets accessible through various soft-tissue acoustic windows in the human body. The focused ultrasound beam parameters are chosen so that biologically significant temperature rises are achieved only within the focal volume.

Objectives: The first consensus report presented by the European Germ Cell Cancer Consensus Group (EGCCCG) in the year 2004 has found widespread approval by many colleagues throughout the world. In November 2006, the group met a second time under the auspices of the Department of Urology of the Amsterdam Medical Center, Amsterdam, The Netherlands.

Methods: Medical oncologists, urological surgeons, radiation oncologists as well as pathologists from several European countries reviewed and discussed the data that had emerged since the 2002 conference, and incorporated the new data into updated and revised guidelines.

This review draws the recent state of the art in metabolic diagnosis and metaphylaxis of stone disease. It is the basis for the consensus approval with the other medical societies and institutions in Germany involved in the guideline process of the new "Urolithiasis Guideline". The German Working Committee on Stone Disease reviewed critically the current literature in the field of urolithiasis-including the existing German and EAU-Guidelines as well as the Conference Book of the First International Consultation on Stone Disease.

Germ cell tumour is the most frequent malignant tumour type in young men with a 100% rise in the incidence every 20 years. Despite this, the high sensitivity of germ cell tumours to platinum-based chemotherapy, together with radiation and surgical measures, leads to the high cure rate of > or = 99% in early stages and 90%, 75-80% and 50% in advanced disease with 'good', 'intermediate' and 'poor' prognostic criteria (IGCCCG classification), respectively. Purpose Of The Review: The conviction that a renal cell carcinoma does not require the entire organ to be removed allows new therapeutic methods to be envisaged that involve only local tissue ablation, rather than the complete removal of the organ. The trend toward minimally invasive options in the management of renal tumours has prompted interest in energy-based ablation techniques as a possible alternative to radical or partial nephrectomy in selected patients. Cryoablation, radiofrequency interstitial tumour ablation, microwave thermotherapy and high-intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) are among such techniques.

Background: Endoscopic resection techniques on benign prostatic tissue aim at a high ablation rate and a minimal bleeding rate. Objective: Additional anesthesia is required to minimize the tolerable pain level in efficiently performed extracorporeal shockwave lithotripsy (ESWL) with electrohydraulic and electromagnetic sources. In order to assess optimum anesthesia for each patient undergoing a standardized ESWL protocol, pain measurement and scoring were carried out.
