Background: Although it is well established that antibiotic prophylaxis is not needed in soft tissue upper extremity cases, there is still no definitive consensus when hardware implantation is involved. We hypothesize that antibiotic prophylaxis is not necessary and there is no difference in postoperative surgical site infection rates regardless of preoperative antibiotic administration.

Methods: A retrospective cohort analysis was performed on upper extremity surgical cases with hardware implantation performed at a single institution amongst 5 hand surgeons between November 2021 and November 2023.

Background: The recent trend in administering postoperative oral corticosteroids has proven effective in alleviating pain and improving surgical outcomes for hand and upper extremity procedures. However, concerns persist regarding potential infection risks despite a lack of supporting evidence in the current literature. We propose that a 6-day regimen of low-dose postoperative oral corticosteroids is safe and does not increase the likelihood of surgical site infections (SSIs) in adult upper extremity surgeries.

n the Neotropics, the focus of apomictic studies predominantly centres on trees within the Brazilian savanna, characterized, mostly as sporophytic and facultative, associated with polyploidy and polyembryony. To enhance our understanding of the mechanisms governing apomixis and sexual reproduction in tropical herbaceous plants, we clarify the relationship between apomixis, chromosome counts, and polyembryony in the epiphytic orchid , which forms a polyploid complex within rocky outcrops in both the Brazilian savanna and the Atlantic forest. To define embryo origins and describe megasporogenesis and megagametogenesis, we performed manual self-pollinations in first-day flowers of cultivated plants, considering all three cytotypes (2, 3, 4) of this species.

Glenohumeral Dysplasia Following Brachial Plexus Birth Injuries: A Review.

Background And Objectives: Despite the high morbidity associated with glenohumeral dysplasia (GHD) in children with brachial plexus birth injuries, the progression of this condition often remains unnoticed, even after correcting for the underlying brachial plexus birth injuries. GHD, driven by a multifactorial process involving disruptions in both direct and indirect neural regulation of bony and muscular structures, can lead to intermittent or permanent shoulder mobility imbalances, significantly impacting the quality of life of those affected. Recent research efforts are increasingly directed toward identifying the root causes, managing the deformity, and determining effective treatment options for correcting GHD.

Outcomes of glenohumeral dysplasia after brachial plexus birth injury using the Sup-ER orthosis.

We investigated the efficacy of the supination-external rotation ('Sup-ER') orthosis, designed as a non-operative treatment to maintain normal anatomical growth of the shoulder, on the progression of glenohumeral dysplasia in patients with brachial plexus birth injuries. The Sup-ER orthosis was fabricated for 20 infants diagnosed with glenohumeral dysplasia after brachial plexus birth injuries and its success in correcting glenohumeral dysplasia was confirmed by objective calculations of the alpha angle on serial ultrasound findings and improvement in Active Movement Scale scores. Of the 20 patients, 14 had successful resolution of glenohumeral dysplasia, confirmed by shoulder abduction, shoulder flexion, external rotation and supination, Active Movement Scale scores and improving alpha angle measurements.
