Background: Although it is well established that antibiotic prophylaxis is not needed in soft tissue upper extremity cases, there is still no definitive consensus when hardware implantation is involved. We hypothesize that antibiotic prophylaxis is not necessary and there is no difference in postoperative surgical site infection rates regardless of preoperative antibiotic administration.
Methods: A retrospective cohort analysis was performed on upper extremity surgical cases with hardware implantation performed at a single institution amongst 5 hand surgeons between November 2021 and November 2023.
Aims: Disulfiram (Antabuse®) is an oral alcohol sobriety medication that exhibits antimicrobial activity against Gram-positive facultative anaerobes. The aims of this study were to measure the antimicrobial activity against anaerobic bacteria of the gut human microbiome and establish the extent that disulfiram alters the microbial composition of the ileum, cecum, and feces using C57BL/6 mice.
Methods And Results: Antimicrobial susceptibility testing by the microdilution method revealed that disulfiram inhibits the in vitro growth of gut anaerobic species of Bacteroides, Clostridium, Peptostreptococcus, and Porphyromonas.

Background: Apert syndrome is a relatively rare genetic disorder with a constellation of distinct craniofacial deformities and bilateral syndactyly of the hands and feet. Although the literature contains ample evidence for the need to treat cranial, midfacial, and hand abnormalities, there are severe shortcomings in the literature when attempting to describe the pathology and management of the entire upper limb in patients with Apert syndrome.
Methods: A thorough literature search was performed using PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, and Google Scholar, on the management of the upper extremity in Apert syndrome, including the shoulder, elbow, and hand.

The Sup-ER orthosis was fabricated for 20 infants diagnosed with glenohumeral dysplasia after brachial plexus birth injuries and its success in correcting glenohumeral dysplasia was confirmed by objective calculations of the alpha angle on serial ultrasound findings and improvement in Active Movement Scale scores. Of the 20 patients, 14 had successful resolution of glenohumeral dysplasia, confirmed by shoulder abduction, shoulder flexion, external rotation and supination, Active Movement Scale scores and improving alpha angle measurements.
