The mobility of proteins in the bilayer membrane is affected by (local) changes in lipid environment, which is important to their biological functioning. Artificial molecular systems that-to some extent-imitate tasks of membrane-embedded proteins are increasingly developed, however, they are usually controlled through responsive units in their core structure. Here we present an alternative approach based on an amphiphilic stiff-stilbene derivative that enables control of membrane fluidity by light.

The DANSPOT trial will investigate the clinical effect of sex- and population-specific 99th percentiles of cTn. We report the 99th percentiles derived from this trial and their dependency on kidney function.

Objectives: The authors aimed to examine changes in LV function and morphology in 2 to 4-year-old children with and without LVNC at birth and to describe the prevalence of LVNC in first-degree relatives.
Methods: Echocardiograms in children with and without LVNC (matched 1:4) were performed at 2 to 4 years and in first-degree relatives.
Lipid conjugates have advanced the field of lipid-based nanomedicine by promoting active-targeting (ligand, peptide, antibody), stability (PEGylation), controlled release (lipoid prodrug), and probe-based tracking (fluorophore). Recent findings indicate lipid conjugates dissociating from nanomedicine upon encountering a biological environment. Yet, implications for (pre)clinical outcomes remain unclear.

For the first time, we employ high-resolution laser ablation mass spectrometry for lead isotope (Pb/Pb and Pb/Pb) analysis on 350-year-old black crust stratigraphies found on historic built structures, providing insights into past air pollution signatures. Our findings reveal a gradual shift in the crust stratigraphy toward lower Pb/Pb and higher Pb/Pb isotope ratios from the older to the younger layers, indicating changes in lead sources over time.

In the present study, we examined the effects of the three clinically-approved ICLs, Dlin-MC3-DMA, ALC-0315 and SM-102, as well as DODAP, on the in vitro and in vivo performance of LNPs for mRNA delivery and vaccine efficacy. mRNA-LNPs containing these lipids were successfully prepared, which were all found to be very similar in their physicochemical properties and mRNA encapsulation efficiencies.

View Article and Find Full Text PDFIn this study, the microstructure of mock-up mortar specimens for a historic environment, composed of different mixtures, was studied using mercury intrusion porosity (MIP) and microcomputed tomography (µCT), highlighting the advantages and drawbacks of both techniques. Porosity, sphericity, and pores size distribution were studied, evaluating changes according to mortar composition (aerial and hydraulic binders, quartz sand, and crushed limestone aggregate). The µCT results were rendered using 3D visualization software, which provides complementary information for the interpretation of the data obtained using 3D data-analysis software.

It is expected that the elevated air temperatures in urban environments, the so-called urban heat island (UHI), will have an impact on freeze-thaw weathering. In this study, the impact of the urban heat island on the potential freeze-thaw risk is assessed by parameterization of climatic data of 1 year (07/2016-06/2017) from the MOCCA (Monitoring the City's Climate and Atmosphere) project, which studies the urban heat island in Ghent, Belgium.

Neutron radiography was used to monitor capillary water absorption, and to analyse changes in physical properties caused by heat treatment of specimens for the purposes of artificially ageing and different treatment applications with stone consolidants.
