Light- and electron-microscopic autoradiography were used to obtain a coordinated metabolic-morphologic view of some of the events of cellular differentiation that occur across the epidermis of the Pacific hagfish (Eptatretus stoutii) and which enable this animal to secrete copious amounts of mucus. As judged by epidermal incorporation of [3H]-thymidine in vivo, about 98% of DNA replication is confined to the basal three layers of the total of 6--8 layers of cells. Small mucous cells (SMC), the most numerous of the three major cell types involved in mucigenesis, show in vitro and in vivo radioincorporation profiles of [3H]-L-lysine and [3H]-D-glucosamine which differ markedly from those of [3H]-L-fucose and [3H]-D-galactose.

Using venography as the reference procedure, this study examined the utility of fibrinogen I 125 scanning for the detection or demonstration of deep venous thrombosis. The results demonstrate the inability of leg scanning to detect accurately the presence or absence of thrombi in the deep venous system. Most striking was the lack of sensitivity of this procedure in areas where the propensity for embolization is greatest.

Three watersheds, varying from highly polluted or moderately polluted to essentially pollution-free, were surveyed to determine the frequency of fish disease. Over a five year period, it was found that a relationship existed between the level of pollution and frequency of disease. The occurrence rates of microbial and oncogenic diseases increased similarly in relation to increases in pollution in the waters.

Clinical trials of the anti-inflammatory activity of corticosteroids for external use The influence on skin temperature of 4 corticoid-containing formulations and 3 steroid-free bases was tested in 9 subjects in whom no pathological skin changes were present but who were known to be sensitive to metal ions (chromium and nickel). The effect of the preparations on the healthy skin (vasoconstrictive effect) after a duration of action of 2 and 6 h was compared with the effect on skin sites treated subsequently with the contact allergens for a period of 24 h. In the procedure used the trial preparations were allowed to act for 2 and 6 h under occlusive dressing, or for 4 and 8 h, the dressing being removed for 2 h in each case.

Subcellular localization of monoamine oxidase in bovine thalamus tissue using immunoferritin conjugates.

A combination of discontinuous sucrose gradient analysis and polyacrylamide electrophoresis was used to isolate one of the multiple forms of monoamine oxidase (MAO) from bovine thalamus. This substance (the principle form and the most anodic of the five MAO forms observed) was used as a basis for an immunoferritin-electron microscope approach to determine the subcellular localization of MAO in thalamus. This form of MAO, as well as antigenically related forms, was found to reside mainly on the outer mitochondrial membrane.
