Importance: In neonates with birth asphyxia (BA) and hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy, therapeutic hypothermia (TH), initiated within six hours, is the only safe and established neuroprotective measure to prevent secondary brain injury. Infants born outside of TH centers have delayed access to cooling.

The study covered a small, shallow lake, intensively used for recreation (sailing, tourist services and port infrastructure). This study aimed to determine the spatial differentiation of bottom sediments and the potential for phosphorus release in five zones, differing mainly in the type of recreation, depth, direct catchment management, shoreline management and macrophyte presence. Chronic disease in a child, with the associated hospital stays, places considerable demands on the child and their family. The aim of this study was to investigate the parents' perceptions of the music therapy used with their child during a hospital stay and to determine whether they felt that it reduced the child's anxiety and stress generated by hospital admission. Here, we report on the polyester degrading ability of a novel carboxylic ester hydrolase identified in the genome of the marine hydrocarbonoclastic bacterium VGXO14 . The cofactor-less dioxygenase AqdC of Mycobacteroides abscessus catalyzes the cleavage and thus inactivation of the Pseudomonas quinolone signal (PQS, 2-heptyl-3-hydroxy-4(1H)-quinolone), which plays a central role in the regulation of virulence factor production by Pseudomonas aeruginosa. We present here the crystal structures of AqdC in its native state and in complex with the PQS cleavage product N-octanoylanthranilic acid, and of mutant AqdC proteins in complex with PQS. AqdC possesses an α/β-hydrolase fold core domain with additional helices forming a cap domain.

The hyperthermophilic crenarchaeon Ignicoccus hospitalis KIN4/I possesses at least 35 putative genes encoding enzymes that belong to the α/β-hydrolase superfamily. Ectoine synthase (EctC) is the signature enzyme for the production of ectoine, a compatible solute and chemical chaperone widely synthesized by bacteria as a cellular defense against the detrimental effects of osmotic stress.
