Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to assess if ureteral catheterization (UCath), a minimally invasive diagnostic procedure, increases the risk of intravesical recurrence (IVR) in patients with upper tract urothelial carcinoma (UTUC) after undergoing radical nephroureterectomy (RNU).
  • Out of 163 patients analyzed, those who underwent UCath showed a significantly higher risk of developing IVR, indicated by a hazard ratio of 17.8 and a 5-year IVR-free survival rate of only 52%.
  • The findings suggest that even minimal diagnostic procedures like UCath may pose a considerable risk for IVR following RNU in UTUC patients, while other procedures such as ureterorenoscopy

Soft tissue calcification occurs in many parts of the body, including the gingival tissue. Epithelial cell-derived MVs can control many functions in fibroblasts but their role in regulating mineralization has not been explored. We hypothesized that microvesicles (MVs) derived from gingival epithelial cells could regulate calcification of gingival fibroblast cultures in osteogenic environment.

Article Synopsis
  • Periodontitis is a serious complication for diabetic patients, as it worsens their overall health and can create a cycle of worsening diabetes and gum disease.
  • A study on rats tested the effects of the GLP-1 receptor agonist liraglutide, which was found to reduce inflammation and help improve periodontitis symptoms by decreasing certain inflammatory cells.
  • Liraglutide not only helped lower glucose levels but also showed potential benefits in treating periodontitis by reducing bone loss and inflammatory markers associated with the disease.
