We demonstrate a novel pathway to control and stabilize oxygen vacancies in complex transition-metal oxide thin films. Using atomic layer-by-layer pulsed laser deposition (PLD) from two separate targets, we synthesize high-quality single-crystalline CaMnO films with systematically varying oxygen vacancy defect formation energies as controlled by coherent tensile strain. The systematic increase of the oxygen vacancy content in CaMnO as a function of applied in-plane strain is observed and confirmed experimentally using high-resolution soft X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) in conjunction with bulk-sensitive hard X-ray photoemission spectroscopy (HAXPES).

Supported by theoretical calculations we identify, for both low (1%) and high (13%) Mn doping values, the electronic character of the states near the top of the valence band. Ameloblastin is an enamel-specific protein that plays critical roles in enamel formation, as well as adhesion between ameloblasts and the enamel matrix, as shown by analyses of ameloblastin-null mice. In the present study, we produced two distinct antibodies that recognize the N-terminus and C-terminus regions of caiman ameloblastin, in order to elucidate the fate of ameloblastin peptides during tooth development. An immunohistochemical study using the antibodies showed that caiman ameloblastin was a tooth-specific matrix protein that may initially be cleaved into two groups, N- and C-terminal peptides, as shown in mammals.
