Treatment of complete loss of skin thickness requires expensive cellular materials and limited skin grafts used as temporary coverage. This paper presents an acellular bilayer scaffold modified with polydopamine (PDA), which is designed to mimic a missing dermis and a basement membrane (BM). The authors present an anatomical study and clinical experience with radial forearm flap (RFF) and pronator quadratus muscle (PQM) application in the reconstruction of various body areas. The aim was to describe the anatomical placement and proportions of the PQM, the anatomical location of the major arterial branch of the radial artery supplying the PQM, and the application of this knowledge in clinical practice. The anatomical study was based upon an analysis of 13 fresh adult cadaver upper extremities, of which nine were female and four male; both arms from the same donors were used in four cases.

The authors present a technique of bilateral breast reconstruction in case series of 5 patients, allowing simultaneous harvest of both latissimus dorsi myocutaneous flaps. Three patients underwent bilateral immediate reconstruction after prophylactic mastectomy. One patient underwent a delayed reconstruction, in 1 patient latissimus dorsi myocutaneous flap was used after prophylactic mastectomy and reconstruction with implants followed by bilateral necrosis of the skin flaps.

Wound healing is a process regulated by a complex interaction of multiple growth factors including fibroblast growth factor 2 (FGF2). Although FGF2 appears in several tissue engineered studies, its applications are limited due to its low stability both in vitro and in vivo. Here, this shortcoming is overcome by a unique nine-point mutant of the low molecular weight isoform FGF2 retaining full biological activity even after twenty days at 37 °C.

Nasal basal cell carcinomas are the most common malignant tumors of the facial skin, which predilectively affect areas exposed to sunlight, including the nasal area. After their radical removal, there is a variable complex defect of the affected area (defect of all 3 layers of the nose) or even a composite defect (it also occupies the adjacent soft tissues around the nose), which are usually used to reconstruct this area. A 73-year-old female patient with recurrent infiltrative basal cell carcinoma of the left nasal ala underwent four re-excisions before histologically verified free margins without the presence of the tumor.

The progress in critical and intensive care burn management in the 21st century has significantly reduced mortality in patients with critical burn injuries. This progress has moved the focus of burns care from simple survival to the quality of life after the burn trauma, in particular to healing of defects caused by full-thickness burns, subsequent maturation, characteristics and appearance of the scars. The benefits of the application of skin substitutes include elimination of excessive scarring, hypertrophic and keloid scar formation and subsequent contracture development.

Nowadays, free flap reconstruction in devastating lower limb trauma is a standard procedure in reconstructive surgery. The greatest factor directly affecting limb salvage is still the risk of infectious complications, whether local or systemic. Fungal wound infections are not among the most common infection complications in surgery, but their low incidence is compensated for by their fulminant and serious course, as well as severe local tissue destruction and strong angio-invasive potential together with the possibility of dissemination.

Fractures of the proximal tibia are high energy fractures. According to available literature, 3-4% of all fractures heal problematically with non-union or osteomyelitis. Usage of locking compression plating system as well as usage of hybrid fixator is associated with the risk of compartment syndrome, local infection and subsequent malunion, osteomyelitis or non-union.
