Objective: Prematurity and intra-uterine growth retardation are responsible for brain damage associated with various neurocognitive and behavioral disorders in more than 9 million children each year. Most pharmacological strategies aimed at preventing perinatal brain injury have not demonstrated substantial clinical benefits so far. In contrast, enrichment of the newborn's environment appears to have positive effects on brain structure and function, influences newborn hormonal responses, and has lasting neurobehavioral consequences during infancy and adulthood.

Every year, 30 million infants worldwide are delivered after intra-uterine growth restriction (IUGR) and 15 million are born preterm. These two conditions are the leading causes of ante-/perinatal stress and brain injury responsible for neurocognitive and behavioral disorders affecting more than 9 million children each year. Most pharmacological candidates to prevent perinatal brain damage have failed to demonstrate substantial benefits.

The neonatal period is critical for brain development and determinant for long-term brain trajectory. Yet, this time concurs with a sensitivity and risk for numerous brain injuries following perinatal complications such as preterm birth. Brain injury in premature infants leads to a complex amalgam of primary destructive diseases and secondary maturational and trophic disturbances and, as a consequence, to long-term neurocognitive and behavioral problems.

Social interaction during adolescence strongly influences brain function and behavior, and the recent pandemic has emphasized the devastating effect of social distancing on mental health. While accumulating evidence has shown the importance of the reward system in encoding specific aspects of social interaction, the consequences of social isolation on the reward system and the development of social skills later in adulthood are still largely unknown. Here, we found that 1 week of social isolation during adolescence in male mice increased social interaction at the expense of social habituation and social novelty preference.

Pathogenic variants in A Disintegrin And Metalloproteinase (ADAM) 22, the postsynaptic cell membrane receptor for the glycoprotein leucine-rich repeat glioma-inactivated protein 1 (LGI1), have been recently associated with recessive developmental and epileptic encephalopathy. However, so far, only two affected individuals have been described and many features of this disorder are unknown. We refine the phenotype and report 19 additional individuals harbouring compound heterozygous or homozygous inactivating ADAM22 variants, of whom 18 had clinical data available.

This paper describes a dataset of residential electricity household and heat pump load profiles, measured in 38 single-family houses in Northern Germany. We provide data per household of apparent, active and reactive power (W), voltage (V), current (A) and the power factor (no unit) in 10 seconds to 60 minutes temporal resolution from May 2018 to the end of 2020. We validated the dataset both in itself, comparing different measurements that should produce the same results, and externally to standard load profiles and found no major inconsistencies.

Microglial activation is a key modulator of brain vulnerability in response to intra-uterine growth restriction (IUGR). However, the consequences of IUGR on microglial development and the microglial proteome are still unknown. We used a model of IUGR induced by a gestational low-protein diet (LPD) in rats.

Background: Colectomy with transanal ileal pouch-anal anastomosis (taIPAA) is a surgical technique that can be used to treat benign colorectal disease. Ulcerative colitis is the most frequent inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and although pharmacological therapy has improved, colectomy rates reach up to 15%. The objective of this study was to determine anastomotic leakage rates and treatment after taIPAA as well as short- and long-term pouch function.

The problem for molecular identification knows many solutions, which include mass spectrometers whose mass sensitivity depends on the performance of the detector involved. The purpose of this article is to show by means of molecular dynamics simulations how a laser-cooled ion cloud, confined in a linear radio-frequency trap, can reach the ultimate sensitivity providing the detection of individual charged heavy molecular ions. In our simulations, we model the laser-cooled Ca ions as two-level atoms, confined thanks to a set of constant and time oscillating electrical fields.

Cardiorespiratory activity is highly associated with infants' sleep duration and quality. We performed a systematic literature search of PubMed and EMBASE databases to investigate if and how cardiorespiratory parameters can be used for sleep state classification in preterm infants and in what way maturation influences this relation. All retrieved citations were screened against predetermined inclusion and exclusion criteria.

Introduction: The laparoscopic approach for TME is proven to be non-inferior in oncological outcome compared to open surgery. Anatomical limitations in the male and obese pelvis with resulting pathological shortcomings and high conversion rates were stimuli for alternative approaches. The transanal approach for TME (TaTME) was introduced to overcome these limitations.

Background And Study Aims:  Recurrent laryngeal nerve palsy (RLNP) is a potential complication of anterior discectomy and fusion (ACDF). There still is substantial disagreement on the actual prevalence of RLNP after ACDF as well as on risk factors for postoperative RLNP. The aim of this study was to describe the prevalence of postoperative RLNP in a cohort of consecutive cases of ACDF and to examine potential risk factors.

Understanding the links between sleep and brain development is important, as rapid eye movement (REM) sleep and non-REM (NREM) sleep seem to contribute to different aspects of brain maturation. If children have sleep problems, REM sleep and NREM sleep are likely to have different consequences for their developing brain, depending on their age. We highlight important discoveries from human and animal research on the role sleep plays in brain development.

Background: Disordered thyroid hormone transport, due to mutations in the SLC16A2 gene encoding monocarboxylate transporter 8 (MCT8), is characterised by intellectual and motor disability resulting from cerebral hypothyroidism and chronic peripheral thyrotoxicosis. We sought to systematically assess the phenotypic characteristics and natural history of patients with MCT8 deficiency.

Methods: We did an international, multicentre, cohort study, analysing retrospective data from Jan 1, 2003, to Dec 31, 2019, from patients with MCT8 deficiency followed up in 47 hospitals in 22 countries globally.

Background: Previous data suggest that the incidence of hypoparathyroidism after surgery for Graves disease (GD) is lower after subtotal thyroidectomy compared to total thyroidectomy (TT). The present study evaluated the incidence of postoperative hypoparathyroidism after near-total (NTT) versus TT in GD.

Methods/design: In a multicenter prospective randomized controlled clinical trial, patients with GD were randomized intraoperatively to NTT or TT.

Background: Deficiency of the thyroid hormone transporter monocarboxylate transporter 8 (MCT8) causes severe intellectual and motor disability and high serum tri-iodothyronine (T) concentrations (Allan-Herndon-Dudley syndrome). This chronic thyrotoxicosis leads to progressive deterioration in bodyweight, tachycardia, and muscle wasting, predisposing affected individuals to substantial morbidity and mortality. Treatment that safely alleviates peripheral thyrotoxicosis and reverses cerebral hypothyroidism is not yet available.

Stringent conditions on the phase relation of multiple photons are a prerequisite for novel protocols of high-resolution coherent spectroscopy. In a recent experiment, we have implemented an interrogation process of a Ca-ion cloud based on three-photon coherent population trapping, with the potential to serve as a frequency reference in the THz range. This high-resolution interrogation has been made possible by phase-locking both laser sources for cooling and repumping of the trapped ions to a clock laser at 729 nm by means of an optical frequency comb.

Multipole radio-frequency (RF) traps are central to collisional experiments in cryogenic environments. They also offer possibilities to generate new type of ion crystals topologies and in particular the potential to create infinite 1D/2D structures: ion rings and ion tubes. However, multipole traps have also been shown to be very sensitive to geometrical misalignment of the trap rods, leading to additional local trapping minima.

The atypical hemolytic uremic syndrome (aHUS), one of the three major forms of thrombotic microangiopathy, is characterized by genetic alterations in the area of the complement cascade, which can be detected in 40%-60% of all patients with aHUS. Mutations in over 10 different genes have now been identified. The most frequent and clinically relevant of these are mutations that result in a decreased or absent function of factor H, the formation of hybrid genes, or the formation of autoantibodies against factor H.

Background: Across Europe, transplant centers vary in the content of the psychosocial evaluation for eligible living organ donors. To identify whether a common framework underlies this variation in this evaluation, we studied which psychosocial screening items are most commonly used and considered as most important in current psychosocial screening programs of living organ donors.

Methods: A multivariate analytic method, concept mapping, was used to generate a visual representation of the "psychosocial" screening items of living kidney and liver donors.

Pancreatic malformations usually represent a surgical challenge, however, depending on the anatomical location even complex procedures such as pancreatic head resection may be facilitated. In a 78-year-old-woman the unique observation of a missing pancreatic isthmus was made during pylorus-preserving pancreaticoduodenectomy for pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma. Resection of the pancreatic head could be performed without the usual cross-section at the isthmus, the pancreatic remnant was drained by pancreaticogastrostomy.
