Multi-Institutional Analysis of Choledocholithiasis in Pediatric vs Adult Patients.

Background: In adults, upfront intraoperative cholangiogram with laparoscopic common bile duct exploration (LCBDE) is well accepted for management of choledocholithiasis. Despite recent evidence supporting LCBDE utility in children, there has been hesitation to adopt this surgery first (SF) approach over ERCP first (EF) due to perceived technical challenges. We compared rates of successful stone clearance during LCBDE between adult and pediatric patients to evaluate if pediatric surgeons could anticipate similar rates of successful clearance.

Online videos of robotic-assisted cholecystectomies: more harm than good?

Background: Many surgeons use online videos to learn. However, these videos vary in content, quality, and educational value. In the setting of recent work questioning the safety of robotic-assisted cholecystectomies, we aimed (1) to identify highly watched online videos of robotic-assisted cholecystectomies, (2) to determine whether these videos demonstrate suboptimal techniques, and (3) to compare videos based on platform.

The Impact of the COVID-19 Pandemic on Geographic Placement of Applicants to General Surgery Residency Programs.

Objective: COVID-19 greatly influenced medical education and the residency match. As new guidelines were established to promote safety, travel was restricted, visiting rotations discontinued, and residency interviews turned virtual. The purpose of this study is to assess the geographic trends in distribution of successfully matched General Surgery applicants prior to and after the implementation of pandemic guidelines, and what we can learn from them as we move forward.

Implementation of an Online Intraoperative Assessment of Technical Performance for Surgical Trainees.

Introduction: Assessment of surgical resident technical performance is an integral component of any surgical training program. Timely assessment delivered in a structured format is a critical step to enhance technical skills, but residents often report that the quality and quantity of timely feedback received is lacking. Moreover, the absence of written feedback with specificity can allow residents to seemingly progress in their operative milestones as a junior resident, but struggle as they progress into their postgraduate year 3 and above.

From the Operating Room to Online: Medical Student Surgery Education in the Time of COVID-19.

Background: On March 17, 2020 the Association of American Medical Colleges recommended dismissal of medical students from clinical settings due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Third-year (M3) and fourth-year (M4) medical students were at home, M4s were interested in teaching, and residents and faculty had fewer clinical responsibilities due to elective surgery cancellations. To continue M3 access to education, we created a virtual surgery elective (VSE) that aimed to broaden students' exposure to, and elicit interest in, general surgery (GS).

The current article addresses the psychometric qualities of the German Version of Gudjonsson's Blame Attribution Inventory (GBAI), a self-report scale for measuring attribution of blame for crime. The GBAI was administered to a criminal sample of forensic and criminal inmates (n=107). Findings indicate that the German version of the Gudjonsson Blame Attribution Inventory possesses acceptable test-retest stability and good internal consistency.

Laparoscopic management of colonic lipomas: a case report and review of the literature.

Colonic lipomas are infrequent lesions, yet they are the second most common benign lesions of the colon after benign adenomatous polyps. The current article addresses the psychometric qualities of the German version of the Structured Inventory of Malingered Symptomatology (SIMS), a self-report measure of malingering. The SIMS was administered to a heterogeneous sample of forensic patients (n=62) and undergraduate students (n=204). Within the student sample, some undergraduates were instructed to feign certain pathological conditions, while others were asked to respond honestly to the SIMS items.

The degree of stress produced by such critical life events is seen largely dependent on controllability and predictability of the situation. Our study focuses on changes in behavior and well-being at four times during ten weeks while 34 long-term gerontopsychiatric patients moved into reconstructed wards, which were mainly improved under ecological aspects.
