The most abundant lipid and protein components of human plasma high density lipoproteins are phosphatidylcholine and apolipoprotein A-I (A-I). Under appropriate conditions, A-I spontaneously associates with dimyristoylphosphatidylcholine (DMPC) to quantitatively form a lipid-protein complex with a DMPC/A-I molar ratio of 100:1. Differential scanning calorimetry of this complex reveals two broad thermal transitions centered at approximately 27 and 72 degrees C.

Following an intensive course of combination chemotherapy, patients with minimal residual ovarian cancer were treated with increasing concentrations of intraperitoneal Corynebacterium parvum to assess whether or not natural killer (NK) cells could be activated. Immunotherapy was administered every 2 weeks, initially with a dose of 250 micrograms/m2, which was progressively escalated as tolerated. Each treatment induced a peritoneal cellular exudate which consisted primarily of neutrophils 48h after injection and of lymphocytes and macrophages at 7 and 14 days after injection.

Twelve cases of gastrointestinal leiomyoblastoma were studied by electron microscopy, and the findings were compared with those in 12 cases of leiomyoma and nine cases of leiomyosarcoma of the gastrointestinal tract. All of the "classic" ultrastructural features of smooth-muscle tumors, including subplasmalemmal dense patches, pinocytotic vesicles, cytoplasmic microfilaments and dense bodies, and focal basement membrane formation, were present in the leiomyoblastomas ; however, extensive sampling was commonly necessary to demonstrate such findings. In contrast, these features were more prominent in leiomyomas and leiomyosarcomas.

A tumor isolate from a patient with serous cystadenocarcinoma of the ovary contained an activated rasK gene detected hy transfection of NIH/3T3 cells. In contrast, DNA from normal cells of the same patient lacked transforming activity, indicating that activation of this transforming gene was the consequence of somatic mutation in the neoplastic cells. The transforming gene product displayed an electrophoretic mobility in sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gels that differed from the mobilities of rasK transforming proteins in other tumors, indicating that a previously undescribed mutation was responsible for activation of rasK in this ovarian carcinoma.

A method is described whereby cell fusions can be bulk-frozen shortly after the hybridization step. Recoveries are shown to be comparable to those obtained for control hybridomas cultured without freezing. This study was undertaken to measure the blood concentrations of bupivacaine associated with a single loading dose followed by continuous epidural infusion for the management of the pain of labor and delivery with special reference to the potential for accumulation and toxicity. Four-milliliter venous blood samples were obtained every 15 min following the loading dose until delivery. If inadequate analgesia was observed just prior to delivery, an additional dose of bupivacaine was administered.

Expression of histocompatibility antigens and the intensity of inflammatory cellular infiltrate were evaluated in frozen tissue sections from 70 human ovarian tumors and six normal ovaries using monoclonal antibodies and an avidin-biotin immunoperoxidase technique. In the normal human ovary, surface epithelial cells, mature granulosa cells and lutein cells reacted with anti-HLA-A,B,C (HLA) and beta2-microglobulin antibodies but not with anti-Ia (Ia-like, HLA-DR). Stromal cells and granulosa cells of the primordial follicles did not react with any of the antibodies.

Often the data collected in a health care evaluation program consist of a number of indices, each of which represents a different component of a health care process. The question, "Is the health care process in control," to be answered effectively, must be answered in terms of the effect of the several indices considered jointly rather than in terms of each variable considered separately. This article describes the nature of the problem of monitoring jointly several indices of health care and presents two quality control methods, the control ellipse and Hotelling's T2, which are applicable to the multivariable setting.

The murine monoclonal antibody OC 125 reacts with an antigen (CA 125) common to most nonmucinous epithelial ovarian carcinomas. An assay has been developed to detect CA 125 in serum. By this assay, only 1 per cent of 888 apparently healthy persons and 6 per cent of 143 patients with nonmalignant disease had serum CA 125 levels above 35 U per milliliter.

An ovarian carcinoma cell line (OVCA 432) and a B-lymphocyte line (LAZ 446) were established from the same donor. A heteroantiserum (D-100) was prepared in rabbits against OVCA 432 and absorbed with LAZ 446, human AB erythrocytes, and the CX-1 colorectal cell line. After absorption, D-100 reacted by indirect immunofluorescence with six of six epithelial ovarian carcinoma cell lines and cryostat sections of 18 of 18 epithelial ovarian tumors but bound to zero of 12 nonovarian tumor cell lines.
