The metabolism of furazolidone by rat liver and Escherichia coli was characterized in vitro under aerobic and anaerobic incubation conditions. Rat liver 9000g supernatant rapidly metabolized 14C-furazo-lidone to more polar metabolites in the presence or absence of oxygen when NADPH was provided as a cofactor. At least five polar radiolabeled metabolites were detected in these incubations by high pressure liquid chromatography.

A total of 204 Neisseria gonorrhoeae strains, including 39 penicillinase-producing strains, representing 64 distinct auxotype and serovar classes were tested for their ability to grow anaerobically with nitrite as a terminal electron acceptor. All strains grew anaerobically with subtoxic concentrations of nitrite, and all penicillinase-producing strains produced beta-lactamase when grown anaerobically. Nitrite reductase was produced constitutively under aerobic conditions in the absence of nitrite, and cytochrome oxidase was produced constitutively under anaerobic conditions.

The discovery that penicillinase production in Neisseria gonorrhoeae was plasmid mediated and the spread of the beta-lactamase encoding plasmids in gonococcal isolates since 1976, raise the possibility that a nonpathogenic indigenous bacterium could serve as a reservoir for these plasmids. Identification of strain-specific markers on Neisseria gonorrhoeae that are capable of differentiating gonococci into a large number of distinct classes could facilitate analysis of patterns of gonorrhea transmission and application of gonorrhea control measures. A panel of 12 monoclonal antibodies to gonococcal outer membrane protein IA (PrIA) and IB (PrIB) was used to classify 1,433 strains serologically in a worldwide survey. A rapid method was developed for specific detection of microbial beta-lactamases which uses ampicillin and cephalexin as substrates. A case of accelerated hypertension associated with severe oral hemorrhage is described. The evidence in this case suggests that a hypertensive crisis may have been caused by a failure to take medication as prescribed, or may have occurred as a sequel to severe postoperative hemorrhage. The reopening of the surgical site was probably caused by masticatory trauma, and the hemorrhage exacerbated by localized fibrinolytic activity.

An asaccharolytic, gram-negative, oxidase-positive diplococcus was isolated on Martin-Lewis medium from the cervix of a patient attending an arthritis clinic at Seattle Public Health Hospital, Seattle, Wash. This strain, NRL 32165, did not produce detectable acid from glucose, maltose, sucrose, fructose, mannitol, or lactose in either cystine Trypticase agar (BBL Microbiology Systems, Cockeysville, Md.) or modified oxidation-fermentation medium and was identified presumptively as a glucose-negative Neisseria gonorrhoeae strain, but was identified later as Neisseria cinerea on the basis of its biochemical reactions.

The metabolites of 7,12-dimethylbenz[a]anthracene (DMBA), a carcinogenic polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon, in cultures of Cunninghamella elegans were isolated by high-pressure liquid chromatography and characterized by UV spectroscopy and mass spectrometry. The major metabolites were DMBA-trans-8,9-dihydrodiol and DMBA-trans-3,4-dihydrodiol. The 7-hydroxymethyl and the 12-hydroxymethyl derivatives of these dihydrodiol metabolites were also formed.

A mathematical simulation of the Denar D4A articulator and a simulated complement of graphically represented teeth were programmed in a Prime 4000 minicomputer. The computer program could be manipulated to quantitatively evaluate the theoretical effects of changes in articulator and control factors on the anatomy of selected teeth or tooth groups. Intra-arterial CDP was utilized to treat the primary tumor in 11 pediatric patients with osteosarcoma and in one with malignant fibrous histiocytoma. A specific procedure has been developed for the detection of the first two enzymes involved in the arginine dihydrolase system and the detection of the decarboxylases of arginine, glutamic acid, histidine, lysine, ornithine, phenylalanine, tryptophan, and tyrosine.
