We report the development and extensive structure-activity relationship evaluation of a series of modified coumarins as cannabinoid receptor ligands. In radioligand, and [S]GTPγS binding assays the CB receptor binding affinities and efficacies of the new ligands were determined. Furthermore, we used a ligand-based docking approach to validate the empirical observed results.

The path for faculty advancement and self-improvement is often uncertain in higher education. Even in the health professions, where we diligently prepare graduate students for clinical roles, our pathways for new faculty transitioning from clinical to teaching roles are often nebulous. This article describes the process that the MGH Institute of Health Professions undertook in developing a set of Faculty Development Domains to guide graduate health professions faculty as they progress through their teaching careers.

While most graduate health professions programs in the United States have accepted the Interprofessional Education Collaborative's core competencies for collaborative practice, there is no consistent way to integrate the competencies into courses of study already crowded with uniprofessional competencies. A potential negative effect of treating interprofessional education as an add-on is that learners will not engage deeply with the competencies required to work effectively in health care teams. To design an integrated model, one institution adopted a theory from the management literature that frames professional competence as a way of being, not simply a body of knowledge to master.

A primary goal of interprofessional education is to produce clinicians who practice collaboratively to provide patient-centered care. This exploratory study evaluated whether students' attitudes about a literary account of an illness experience endured after a year of professional and clinical education and if students applied lessons learned from a common reading to the delivery of patient centered care. Six focus groups were completed with health professions students and five main themes emerged from the focus group data.

The increasing complexity of healthcare needs underlines the growing importance of interprofessional education and collaborative practice (IPECP) in enhancing quality of patient care. In particular, clinician educators play an influential role in advocating IPECP. The primary goal of our exploratory pilot study is to explore 34 clinician educators' attitudes towards IPECP by using the adapted 14-item Attitudes Toward Health Care Teams Scale (ATHCTS) and 15-item Readiness for Interprofessional Learning Scale (RIPLS).

This perspective article provides a justification for and an overview of the use of narrative as a pedagogical tool for educators to help physical therapist students, residents, and clinicians develop skills of reflection and reflexivity in clinical practice. The use of narratives is a pedagogical approach that provides a reflective and interpretive framework for analyzing and making sense of texts, stories, and other experiences within learning environments. This article describes reflection as a well-established method to support critical analysis of clinical experiences; to assist in uncovering different perspectives of patients, families, and health care professionals involved in patient care; and to broaden the epistemological basis (ie, sources of knowledge) for clinical practice.

Introduction: During pancreaticoduodenectomy (PD) for ductal adenocarcinoma, a frozen section (FS) neck margin is typically assessed, and if positive, additional pancreas is removed to achieve an R0 margin. We analyzed the association of this practice with improved overall survival (OS).

Methods: Patients who underwent PD for pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma from January 2000 to August 2012 at 8 academic centers were classified by neck margin status as negative (R0) or microscopically positive (R1) on the basis of FS and permanent section (PS).

Little is known about the nature of faculty development that is needed to meet calls for a focus on quality and safety with particular attention to the power of interprofessional collaborative practice. Through grounded-theory methodology, the authors describe the motivation and needs of 20 educator/clinicians in multiple disciplines who chose to enroll in an explicitly interprofessional master's program in health profession education. The results, derived from axial coding described by Strauss and Corbin, revealed that faculty pursue such postprofessional master's degrees out of a desire to be better prepared for their roles as educators.

Böddi-szék is one of the shallow soda ponds located in the Kiskunság National Park, Hungary. In June 2008, immediately prior to drying out, an extensive algal bloom dominated by a green alga (Oocystis submarina Lagerheim) was observed in the extremely saline and alkaline water of the pond. The aim of the present study was to reveal the phylogenetic diversity of the bacterial communities inhabiting the water of Böddi-szék during the blooming event.

Lake Red is one of the saline lakes which were formed as a consequence of salt massif dissolution at the foot of the Gurghiu Mountains (Central Romania) at the end of the nineteenth century. The lake water had approximately 15 % w/v salt content. Phylogenetic diversity of prokaryotes inhabiting the water and sediment of the lake was studied using cultivation and cultivation-independent methods following a sampling in spring 2009.

Superior mesenteric artery (SMA) syndrome is an uncommon condition of duodenal obstruction secondary to extrinsic vascular compression. With the advent of laparoscopy, an emerging option to treat SMA syndrome is laparoscopic duodenojejunostomy.
