Wastewater-based surveillance (WBS) allows the analysis of pathogens, chemicals or other biomarkers in wastewater to derive unbiased epidemiological information at population scale. After re-gaining attention during the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic, the field holds promise as a surveillance and early warning system by tracking emerging pathogens with pandemic potential. Expanding the current toolbox of analytical techniques for wastewater analysis, we explored the use of Hyperplex PCR (hpPCR) to analyse SARS-CoV-2 mutations in wastewater samples collected weekly in up to 22 sites across Sweden between October 2022 and December 2023.

Background/objectives: Nucleolin is a major component of the nucleolus and is involved in various aspects of ribosome biogenesis. However, it is also implicated in non-nucleolar functions such as cell cycle regulation and proliferation, linking it to various pathologic processes. The aim of this study was to use differential gene expression analysis and Weighted Gene Co-expression Network analysis (WGCNA) to identify nucleolin-related regulatory pathways and possible key genes as novel therapeutic targets for cancer, viral infections and other diseases.

This study investigates the potential benefits of integrating coarser particle size distributions (PSDs) of 45-106 µm into laser-based powder bed fusion of metals (PBF-LB/M), aiming to reduce costs while maintaining quality standards. Despite the considerable advantages of PBF-LB/M for producing intricate geometries with high precision, the high cost of metal powders remains a barrier to its widespread adoption. By exploring the use of coarser PSDs, particularly from electron beam-based powder bed fusion of metals (PBF-EB/M), significant cost-saving opportunities are identified.

Aorto-atrial fistula is a rare and life-threatening complication of infective endocarditis, classically diagnosed by visualizing a connection between the aorta and atrium with associated continuous flow. A patient presented with bioprosthetic and native valve enterococcal endocarditis with multiple complications, including an aorto-atrial fistula that was diagnosed by color M-mode on transesophageal echocardiography. We review the features of aorto-atrial fistula and utilize this case to demonstrate how M-mode can be leveraged to provide improved temporal resolution in the setting of diagnostic uncertainty.

Interactions between the cardiac and respiratory systems play a pivotal role in physiological functioning. Nonetheless, the intricacies of cardio-respiratory couplings, such as cardio-respiratory phase synchronization (CRPS) and cardio-respiratory coordination (CRC), remain elusive, and an automated algorithm for CRC detection is lacking. In 2017, four independent publications described the glial cell-derived neurotrophic factor (GDNF) receptor alpha-like (GFRAL) as receptor for the growth differentiation factor 15 (GDF15, also MIC-1, NAG-1) with an expression exclusively in the mice brainstem area postrema (AP) and nucleus tractus solitarii (NTS) where it mediates effects of GDF15 on reduction of food intake and body weight. GDF15 is a cell stress cytokine with a widespread expression and pleiotropic effects, which both seem to be in contrast to the reported highly specialized localization of its receptor. This discrepancy prompts us to re-evaluate the expression pattern of GFRAL in the brain and peripheral tissues of mice.
