The most noteworthy characteristic of the complex is the halogen bond between iodine and the pyridine ring with a short N⋯I contact [2.8628 (12) Å].

Background: To monitor the prevalence of schistosomiasis in school-aged children (SAC), the National Bilharzia Control Program (PNLB) was set up by the Senegalese authorities; however, geographically isolated Bedik ethnic groups that did not benefit from this program were found to be heavily infected with Schistosoma mansoni. This observation led us to implement a new schistosomiasis control program in 2008 under the aegis of the non-governmental organization "Le Kaïcedrat" and in partnership with the PNLB/WHO to monitor the prevalence of schistosomiasis in this area. In the village of Assoni, where 100% of SAC were infected, analysis of the stools of pre-school-aged children (PSAC) showed that they were massively infected, so we decided to focus our program on them.

Schistosomiasis is the second most significant parasitic disease in children in several African countries. For this purpose, the "Programme National de Lutte contre les Bilharzioses" (PNLB) was developed in partnership with the World Health Organization (WHO) to control this disease in Senegal. We report Coulomb mediated hybridization of excitonic states in optically active InGaAs quantum dot molecules. By probing the optical response of an individual quantum dot molecule as a function of the static electric field applied along the molecular axis, we observe unexpected avoided level crossings that do not arise from the dominant single-particle tunnel coupling. We identify a new few-particle coupling mechanism stemming from Coulomb interactions between different neutral exciton states.

The authors report the results of controlling schistosomiasis in 53 villages from Ninefecha area-(Kedougou District, East Senegal) within Schistosomiasis National Control Program partnership. The four aims were: i) praziquantel treatment of 3324 children 6-14 years old, ii) installation of a laboratory for children prevalence annual monitoring (random draw one in three), iii) health education of the concerned people ("sensitization"), iiii) construction of latrines. 900 latrines are required and 649 have been built.

We report on the development and testing of a coplanar stripline antenna that is designed for integration in a magneto-photoluminescence experiment to allow coherent control of individual electron spins confined in single self-assembled semiconductor quantum dots. We discuss the design criteria for such a structure which is multi-functional in the sense that it serves not only as microwave delivery but also as electrical top gate and shadow mask for the single quantum dot spectroscopy. We present test measurements on hydrogenated amorphous silicon, demonstrating electrically detected magnetic resonance using the in-plane component of the oscillating magnetic field created by the coplanar stripline antenna necessary due to the particular geometry of the quantum dot spectroscopy.

The aim of this study was to further investigate the motives for and consequences of AAS use, with focus on violent and antisocial behavior. Several case reports and survey studies have indicated that abuse of anabolic androgenic steroids (AAS) often leads to increased aggressiveness and feelings of hostility that may occasionally trigger violent behaviour. Other observations indicate that many users of AAS also abuse alcohol and/or various illegal substances. Since substance abuse is a well-known risk factor for violent behaviour, it could be that violence committed by AAS users might, at least in many cases, actually be caused by abuse of other drugs.

Subsequent echocardiographies revealed the quick formation of an infiltration process inside the left ventricle. Systemic pro-inflammatory cytokine release has been previously implicated as a major death-causing factor in anthrax, however, direct data have been absent. We determined the levels of IL-1 beta, IL-6 and TNF-alpha in serum of mice challenged with virulent (Ames) or attenuated (Sterne) strains of Bacillus anthracis. More than 10-fold increase in the IL-1beta levels was detected in Ames-challenged Balb/c mice, in contrast to more susceptible C57BL/6 mice, which showed no IL-1beta response.
