High-quality colloidal crystals (CCs) are important for use in photonic research and as templates for large-scale plasmonic SERS substrates. We investigated how variations in temperature, colloid concentration, and dip-drawing parameters (rate, incubation time, etc) affect the structure of 2D CCs formed by highly monodisperse silica nanoparticles (SiNPs) synthesized in an l-arginine solution and regrown by a modified Stöber method. The best quality 2D CCs were obtained with aqueous 12 wt% colloids at a temperature of 25 °C, an incubation time of 1 min, and a drawing rate of 50 mm min(-1).

The study included 58 patients with CHD and paroxysmal atrial fibrillation divided into 2 groups depending on thyroid hormone and thyrotropin levels. Group 1 was comprised of 24 patients with subclinical hypothyroidism, group 2 of 18 ones with subclinical hyperthyroidism. Control group consisted of l6 patients with CHD, paroxysmal atrial fibrillation and normal thvroid function.

A complex neurological and neuropsychological examination, including the detection of depression, was conducted in 71 patients with multiple sclerosis aged from 23 to 62 years (mean age 43 ± 9 years). An immunobiochemical study included the analysis of expression of CD80 and CD86 on monocytes and B-cells, expression of TLR2 and TLR4 on monocytes, expression of D3 and D5 dopamine receptors on monocytes and B-cells, using flow cytometry, and the determination of Il-6, Il-10, IL-12p40 and dopamine plasma levels as well as vanillylmandelic acid (VMA, dopamine metabolite) urine levels measured with immunoenzyme assay. The results suggest the involvement of dopamine in the pathogenesis of depression in MS as assessed by dopamine and its metabolites levels.

This work was designed to study expression of Toll 1-10 receptors on the surface of cells present in inflammatory infiltrate from nasal polyps and peripheral blood of the patients with polypous rhinosinusitis. It was shown that the intensity of expression depended on the pathomorphological characteristics of nasal polyps. Tissues removed from the patients with polyps of the oedematous type contained more Toll-10 positive cells and showed enhanced expression of Toll-5 receptors on monocytes and lymphocytes, Toll-3 receptors on monocytes, granulocytes, and lymphocytes, and Toll-9 receptors on granulocytes.

Results of the study on adaptive immunity in patients with polypous rhinosinusitis (PRS) proved to depend on the degree of eosinophilia in the peripheral blood. The patients were allocated to two groups, one comprised of those having up to 150 eosinophils per 1 microliter the other of the patients with a higher eosinophil concentration. Patients of the former group had a significantly reduced number of CD3+, CD4+, CD8+, and CD20+cells in the peripheral blood that may indicate the necessity of administering immunotropic agents.

The ability of pro- and eukaryotic microorganisms to synthesize growth-stimulating phytohormones is reviewed, with emphasis on pathways of biosynthesis of these compounds and their effects on physiological and biochemical properties of the producers. Phytohormones are viewed as specific mediators in interactions between various organisms inhabiting the same ecological niche, the biological role of which is not limited to processes taking place in plants. In addition to setting forth theoretical aspects of this problem, the review underscores the need to utilize such producer microorganisms in plant cultivation and biotechnology.

Immune status measured by the flow cytrometric analysis under the ischemic heart disease and IHD with impaired glucose tolerance has been found to be altered in B cells as well as in T lymphocytes in some cases. Having received the diet supplemented by PUFA "Eicolen", IHD patients present with the restored immune status. Patients with IHD and impaired glucose tolerance did not present with any significant modifications in immune status after PUFA "Eicolen" supplementation.

Chronic morphine treatment of rats for 2 and 4 weeks led to an increase in morphine-binding cells in the spleen, despite the general reduction of mononuclear cell content in the spleen and thymus. Simultaneously, serum antibodies to morphine (AbM) in haemagglutination titres 1:20 and higher appeared in 50% and 80% of animals, respectively. Animals with high titres of AbM had much weaker immune response to a thymus-dependent antigen (sheep red blood cells).

It is indicated that in patients with chronic pancreatitis, lipid peroxidation is activated during disease exacerbation and is reduced in the course of the clinical recovery. Activation of lipid peroxidation is associated with the increasing functional activity of neutrophils stimulated in turn by high trypsin content in blood. In the authors' opinion, such a closed mechanism (trypsin-functional activity of neutrophils-lipid peroxidation-trypsin) determines the maintenance of chronic pancreatitis exacerbation.
