The case involves a 63-year-old hypertensive man, taking antihypertensive medication (olmesartan) for the previous two years, who sought medical attention due to voluminous diarrhea, with several episodes per day and weight loss of 10 kg. He was submitted to a series of diagnostic procedures without elucidation and empirical treatment with unsuccessful outcome. After hospitalization for clinical stabilization and for presenting with duodenal atrophy, obtained by duodenal biopsy associated with negative markers for celiac disease, the patient was diagnosed with suspected olmesartan-induced enteropathy, showing rapid improvement of diarrhea after the drug was withdrawn, with weight regain in 6 months and normalization of the duodenal histological picture after 10 months.

Article Synopsis
  • * The analysis included 15 randomized clinical trials involving 2,186 pregnant women and found that nifedipine was generally more effective than magnesium sulfate, although both drugs similarly prolonged pregnancy by 48 hours in some cases.
  • * Magnesium sulfate had more side effects than nifedipine, and further research is needed to confirm these findings through large-scale studies.

Article Synopsis
  • This paper outlines a protocol for a systematic review and meta-analysis to assess the effectiveness and safety of pembrolizumab, either alone or with other treatments, in adult women with cervical carcinoma starting from stage IB2.
  • The review will follow PRISMA-P guidelines and search multiple databases and grey literature sources, focusing on randomized clinical trials that evaluate pembrolizumab's impact on cervical cancer outcomes.
  • The results will be analyzed and presented to provide quality evidence that can help inform clinical decisions regarding the use of pembrolizumab in this patient population.

Article Synopsis
  • - This meta-analysis reviewed randomized controlled trials to evaluate the effectiveness and safety of laser therapy (specifically CO2 and Er:YAG lasers) for treating genitourinary syndrome of menopause (GSM) in women.
  • - A total of 12 studies with over 5,000 participants were included, showing that CO2-laser therapy significantly improved vaginal health and reduced symptoms like pain during intercourse, dryness, and burning.
  • - Despite the positive outcomes, the evidence's reliability is considered low, which means laser therapy for GSM cannot be strongly recommended at this time.

Introduction: The thyroid cancer has the ninth larger incidence of cancer in the world. Investigations related to the exposure to metals have become important due to the sensibility of the thyroid gland to them. Studies reveal that carcinogenic progressions are associated to the deficiency of the essential trace elements.

Introduction: Obesity is a silent pandemic affecting all ages and is a component of metabolic syndrome. Its treatment is conducted by lifestyle and behavioral changes, pharmacological therapy, and when correctly indicated, bariatric surgery. In recent years, the procedures for weight loss have been investigated due to their relationship with the development of many types of cancer.

Thirst is a real bother that most patients feel in the immediate postoperative period when they still need to fast. Many approaches regarding symptomatic relief strategies have been described in the literature, but strategies with cold water and/or menthol are effective in quenching thirst, as they act on pre-absorptive mechanisms. This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of using menthol popsicles in relieving postoperative thirst in patients undergoing radical prostatectomy.

Background: Several studies around the world support the hypothesis that genetic polymorphisms involved in folate metabolism could be related to the maternal risk for Down syndrome (DS). Most of them investigated the role of MTHFR C677T and/or A1298C polymorphisms as maternal risk factors for DS, but their results are often conflicting and still inconclusive.

Methods: We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis to clarify the association of MTHFR C677T and/or A1298C polymorphisms with the maternal risk of DS.

Background: The use of electronic cigarettes is one of the current public health problems on increasing alert, has been growing at an accelerating rate, and has become a public health emergency. Its importance is explained by the continuous growth and acceleration of oncological rates among all ages versus the absence of high-quality evidence, correlated to the use of nicotine derived products, being at their regular versions or the new ones. Available preclinical data indicate that activation of the sympathetic nervous system by nicotine inhaled from e-cigarettes may stimulate cancer development and growth by several mechanisms, which results can significantly reduce life's quality.

Background: Mechanical factors are primary complications that justify early removal of a peripherally inserted central catheter, and thrombotic catheter occlusion is the most critical mechanical complication associated with loss of device functionality. Studies have investigated these factors in adult patients, but findings are not directly applicable to newborns. Therefore, systematic reviews focusing on this population are necessary for consolidated evidence to aid clinical practice.

Introduction: Cholecystectomy is the intervention of choice for treating acute cholecystitis; when conservative management does not work, it operates on the patient outside the critical condition. It can be performed together with or after endoscopic papillotomy through endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) when it is concurrent with a situation of cholechodocolithiasis or when there is compression and consequent increase in pressure in the bile duct caused by a calculus jammed in the vesicular infundibulum (Mirizzi's syndrome), with or without jaundice, fever, and pain in the right hypochondrium (Charcot's Triad), which can progress to sepsis of biliary origin. This review aims to assess whether the timing of cholecystectomy (before or after ERCP) interferes with the postoperative period and clinical outcome in patients with acute cholecystitis.

Background: The improper handling of a peripherally inserted central catheter (PICC) in newborns (NBs) may result in mechanical and infectious complications.

Aim: The aim of this systematic review (SR) is to estimate the prevalence of complications associated with the use of PICC in NBs.

Methods: We will utilize PubMed, Embase, CENTRAL, Web of Science, Scopus, Cochrane Library, CINAHL, and Google Scholar for the databases search.
