Background: The healthcare industry has one of the highest rates of work-related injuries. Ophthalmologists are at particularly high risk for developing musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs), which are often the result of repetitive movements, such as performing slit lamp examinations. Previous studies used the Rapid Entire Body Assessment (REBA) scale to determine the ergonomic risk of a particular task.

Background And Study Aims: Video capsule endoscopy (VCE) is limited by incomplete procedures. There are also contraindications to the standard ingestion of the capsule that require endoscopic placement. Our aim was to compare the study completion rate of VCE after oral ingestion and endoscopic deployment.

Stress-related eating is increasingly cited as a difficulty in managing healthy eating behaviors and weight. However few interventions have been designed to specifically target stress-related eating. In addition, the optimal target of such an intervention is unclear, as the target might be conceptualized as overall stress reduction or changing emotional eating-related thoughts and behaviors.

Mindfulness-based approaches are growing in popularity as interventions for disordered eating and weight loss. Initial research suggests that mindfulness meditation may be an effective intervention for binge eating; however, no systematic review has examined interventions where mindfulness meditation was the primary intervention and no review has examined its effect on subclinical disordered eating or weight. Using the PRISMA method for systematic reviews, we reviewed 14 studies that investigated mindfulness meditation as the primary intervention and assessed binge eating, emotional eating, and/or weight change.

Mindfulness-based psychotherapies are associated with reductions in depression and anxiety. However, few studies address whether mindfulness-based approaches may benefit individuals with posttraumatic stress symptoms. The current pilot study explored whether group mindfulness-based stress reduction therapy reduced posttraumatic stress symptoms, depression, and negative trauma-related appraisals in 9 adult participants who reported trauma exposure and posttraumatic stress or depression.

Background And Aim: Implantable cardiac devices are a relative contraindication to video capsule endoscopy (VCE) because of concerns regarding interference. As a result of a lack of alternatives, some centers have adopted protocols to allow for VCE in these patients. There are minimal published descriptions of the gastrointestinal outcomes of these procedures.

Goals: To investigate the outcomes of video capsule endoscopy (VCE) performed on patients after bariatric and gastric surgery with a focus on delivery method (oral ingestion or endoscopic placement).

Background: There is minimal published data regarding the use of VCE in patients after bariatric and gastric surgery and the optimal delivery method is unknown.

Methods: Retrospective case series of patients with bariatric or gastric surgery undergoing VCE in a tertiary care center over 3 years.

Self-monitoring of food intake is a cornerstone of behavioral weight loss interventions, but its use has not been evaluated in the treatment of obese patients with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). This pilot study described patterns of adherence to dietary self-monitoring in obese patients with OSA and determined associations between self-monitoring and weight loss, psychosocial functioning, and adherence to continuous positive airway pressure treatment. Participants completed a 6-week behavioral weight loss intervention focused on dietary self-monitoring.

Study Objective: To evaluate the effect of propofol (two mg/kg)/remifentanil (4 μg/kg) on intraocular pressure (IOP) when used for rapid-sequence induction.

Design: Randomized, double-blinded trial.

Setting: Ambulatory surgery center.

Self-report scales assessing relationship-specific incentive and threat sensitivity were created. Initial tests of factor structure and associations with relationship quality were conducted in a sample of persons in intimate relationships (Study 1). Associations with conceptually related measures were examined to determine convergent and discriminant validity in a sample of dating couples (Study 2).

Untreated pediatric patients with homozygous familial hypercholesterolemia usually have myocardial infarctions, heart failure, or death by the teenage years. Low-density lipoprotein (LDL) apheresis effectively lowers LDL cholesterol in the short term, but there is little published information on the long-term safety and efficacy of this treatment in children. An analysis was performed of a registry of all 29 patients who began LDL apheresis before 18 years of age at 15 sites during the 11 years since approval by the United States Food and Drug Administration.

Study Objective: To determine whether a set of predetermined discharge criteria, used by nurses, shortens the length of patient stay in the postanesthesia care unit (PACU) without compromising safety.

Study Design: Prospective clinical study.

Setting: Postoperative recovery area of a large, tertiary-care, academic hospital.

Study Design: Prospective randomized study of patients undergoing spine surgery.

Objective: To compare changes in hemodynamic and cardiac function after prone positioning using different prone positioners.

Summary Of Background Data: Prone positioning decreases blood pressure and cardiac function.

We report the case of a 72-year-old male who underwent primary angioplasty for an acute myocardial infarction and developed a coronary stent infection with Staphylococcus aureus. The patient was treated with a prolonged course of IV antibiotics and underwent debridement and partial stent extraction successfully.

Two interventions designed to increase the likelihood of entry into long-term treatment upon discharge from hospital detoxification are compared in a randomized controlled trial. The 279 study participants were treated for heroin and/or cocaine dependence on detoxification wards in two hospitals in a poor, predominantly Hispanic, neighborhood in New York City. One-third of the participants entered and remained in long-term treatment for the first 30 days after discharge from detoxification, 23% were in treatment for 1-29 days, and 43% received no treatment in the 30 days.

Background: Diaphragmatic excursion during spontaneous ventilation (SV) in normal supine volunteers is greatest in the dependent regions (bottom). During positive pressure ventilation (PPV) after anesthesia and neuromuscular blockade and depending on tidal volume, the nondependent region (top) undergoes the greatest excursion, or the diaphragm moves uniformly. The purpose of this study was to compare diaphragmatic excursion (during SV and PPV) in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) with patients having normal pulmonary function.

Bleeding into the upper airway can cause airway obstruction and death if not recognized promptly. Anesthesiologists are quite familiar with potential airway obstruction from acute epiglottitis, but they may be less familiar with the potential for airway obstruction from epiglottic hematoma. We report what we believe is the second case of epiglottic hematoma after anesthesia and surgery that led to an acute upper airway obstruction.

This report describes the appearance of CO2 on the capnograph during inspiration, which was linked to disconnection of the inner tube of a coaxial circuit extension piece. The increased use of coaxial breathing systems for adults makes inner tubes disconnections an important consideration when the CO2 appears during inspiration.

A 77-year-old man became asystolic 3 days after aortic valve replacement and coronary artery bypass surgery. A dual-chamber temporary pacemaker generator was turned on but failed to discharge; instead, an obscure error message appeared on the liquid crystal display of the pacemaker. The intensive-care nurses and physicians were unable to activate the pacemaker.
