The case for neurons: a no-go theorem for consciousness on a chip.

We apply the methodology of no-go theorems as developed in physics to the question of artificial consciousness. The result is a no-go theorem which shows that under a general assumption, called dynamical relevance, Artificial Intelligence (AI) systems that run on contemporary computer chips cannot be conscious. Consciousness is dynamically relevant, simply put, if, according to a theory of consciousness, it is relevant for the temporal evolution of a system's states.

Towards a structural turn in consciousness science.

Recent activities in virtually all fields engaged in consciousness studies indicate early signs of a structural turn, where verbal descriptions or simple formalisations of conscious experiences are replaced by structural tools, most notably mathematical spaces. My goal here is to offer three comments that, in my opinion, are essential to avoid misunderstandings in these developments early on. These comments concern metaphysical premises of structural approaches, the viability of structure-preserving mappings, and the question of what a structure of conscious experience is in the first place.

Depressive symptoms are specifically related to speech pauses in schizophrenia spectrum disorders.

Depression is a common and debilitating mental illness associated with sadness and negativity and is often comorbid with other psychiatric conditions, such as schizophrenia. Depressive symptoms are presently primarily assessed through clinical interviews, however there are other behavioural indicators being investigated as more objective methods of depressive symptom assessment. The present study aimed to evaluate the utility of assessing depression using quantitative speech parameters by comparing speech between 23 schizophrenia/schizoaffective patients with clinically significant depressive symptoms (DP) 19 schizophrenia/schizoaffective patients without depressive symptoms (NDP) and 22 healthy controls with no psychiatric history (HC).

Impaired ketogenesis ties metabolism to T cell dysfunction in COVID-19.

Anorexia and fasting are host adaptations to acute infection, and induce a metabolic switch towards ketogenesis and the production of ketone bodies, including β-hydroxybutyrate (BHB). However, whether ketogenesis metabolically influences the immune response in pulmonary infections remains unclear. Here we show that the production of BHB is impaired in individuals with SARS-CoV-2-induced acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) but not in those with  influenza-induced ARDS.

Characterization of Transverse Aortic Constriction in Mice Based on the Specific Recruitment of Leukocytes to the Hypertrophic Myocardium and the Aorta Ascendens.

Transverse aortic constriction (TAC) is a model that mimics pressure overload-induced left ventricular (LV) hypertrophy in mice. Alterations in immune cell functionality can promote cardiac and vascular remodeling. In the present study, we characterized the time course in innate immune cell dynamics in response to TAC in the different tissues of mice.

Temporizing Wound VAC Dressing Until Final Negative Margins are Achieved Reduces Myxofibrosarcoma Local Recurrence.

Background: The microinvasive nature of suprafascial myxofibrosarcoma reduces the accuracy of intraoperative margin assessment, and tumor bed resections after soft-tissue reconstruction are unreliable. In 2017, we began temporizing the excised tumor bed with a wound VAC, delaying soft-tissue coverage until final negative margins were achieved. We compare the oncologic/surgical outcomes of suprafascial myxofibrosarcomas managed with VAC temporization (VT) with single-stage excision/reconstruction (SS).

Effects of age of onset and medication on cognitive performance and quality of life in patients with epilepsy.

Previous research shows that earlier age of onset of epilepsy and larger antiepileptic drug (AED) load are related to cognitive impairment and lower quality of life in patients with epilepsy. However, there has been a discrepancy in the specific cognitive domains that are affected and whether AED load is a significant contributor to the cognitive impairment. This study aimed to examine (a) the specific cognitive domains that are affected by age of epilepsy onset and (b) the effects of AED treatment and age of onset on cognition and quality of life.

Falsification and consciousness.

The search for a scientific theory of consciousness should result in theories that are falsifiable. However, here we show that falsification is especially problematic for theories of consciousness. We formally describe the standard experimental setup for testing these theories.

CX3CR1 is a prerequisite for the development of cardiac hypertrophy and left ventricular dysfunction in mice upon transverse aortic constriction.

The CX3CL1/CX3CR1 axis mediates recruitment and extravasation of CX3CR1-expressing subsets of leukocytes and plays a pivotal role in the inflammation-driven pathology of cardiovascular disease. The cardiac immune response differs depending on the underlying causes. This suggests that for the development of successful immunomodulatory therapy in heart failure due to chronic pressure overload induced left ventricular (LV) hypertrophy, the underlying immune patterns must be examined.

Mathematical Models of Consciousness.

In recent years, promising mathematical models have been proposed that aim to describe conscious experience and its relation to the physical domain. Whereas the axioms and metaphysical ideas of these theories have been carefully motivated, their mathematical formalism has not. In this article, we aim to remedy this situation.

Effect of Hospital Characteristics on Performance of Pediatric Digit Replantation in the United States.

 Utilize a national pediatric database to assess whether hospital characteristics such as location, teaching status, ownership, or size impact the performance of pediatric digit replantation following traumatic digit amputation in the United States.  The Kid's Inpatient Database (KID) was used to query pediatric traumatic digit amputations between 2000 and 2012. Ownership (private and public), teaching status (teaching and non-teaching), location (urban and rural), hospital type (general and children's), and size (large and small-medium) characteristics were evaluated.

Brain states matter. A reply to the unfolding argument.

Recently, it has been claimed that Integrated Information Theory and other theories of its type cannot explain consciousness ("unfolding argument"). We unravel this argument mathematically and prove that the premises of the argument imply a much stronger result according to which the observed problem holds for almost all theories of consciousness. We find, however, that one of the premises is unwarranted and show that if this premise is dropped, the argument ceases to work.

The Association of AUSCAN and PRWHE Patient-reported Outcome Measures With Radiographic Progression of Early Thumb Carpometacarpal Arthritis at 36-Month Follow-up Is Limited to Subtle Changes in the Pain Subscale.

Background: There is a paucity of literature that examines how patient-reported outcomes correspond to early radiographic progression of thumb carpometacarpal (CMC) osteoarthritis (OA). This study examines how Australian/Canadian Osteoarthritis Hand Index (AUSCAN) and Patient-Rated Hand and Wrist Evaluation (PRWHE) scores change over 36 months in subjects with early CMC OA.

Methods: Ninety-one subjects with symptomatic early thumb CMC OA were enrolled.

Mortality and Morbidity of Surgical Management of Geriatric Ankle Fractures.

Introduction: The incidence of geriatric ankle fractures is rising. With the substantial variation in the physiologic and functional status within this age group, our null hypothesis was that mortality and complications of open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF) between patients who are aged 65 to 79 are equivalent to ORIF in patients who are aged 80 to 89.

Methods: Patients with ankle fracture were identified using the International Classification of Diseases, Ninth Revision, Clinical Modification diagnosis codes.

Unanticipated Admission Following Outpatient Ligament Reconstruction and Tendon Interposition: An Analysis of 3966 Cases.

Hand surgeons in the United States commonly perform ligament reconstruction and tendon interposition (LRTI) to address debilitating thumb carpometacarpal arthritis. The objective of this investigation was to examine the characteristics that place patients at risk for unanticipated inpatient admission after a planned outpatient LRTI. The American College of Surgeons National Surgical Quality Improvement Program (ACS-NSQIP) datasets from years 2009 to 2016 were used to identify patients with a primary Current Procedural Terminology code for LRTI (25445, 25447).

EFSA's third Scientific Conference 'Science, Food, Society': concluding remarks.

From 18-21 September 2018, EFSA hosted its third Scientific Conference on Science, Food and Society in Parma, Italy. This paper summarises the overall recommendations on future actions and research priorities of the conference and complements the earlier multi-authored papers in this issue. The conference started and closed with the plenary sessions 'where science meets society: putting risk assessment in context' and 'staying relevant in a changing world', respectively.

The Scientific Committee confirms that the Threshold of Toxicological Concern (TTC) is a pragmatic screening and prioritisation tool for use in food safety assessment. This Guidance provides clear step-by-step instructions for use of the TTC approach. The inclusion and exclusion criteria are defined and the use of the TTC decision tree is explained.

Sustained Immunoparalysis in Endotoxin-Tolerized Monocytic Cells.

Sepsis is associated with a strong inflammatory reaction triggering a complex and prolonged immune response. Septic patients have been shown to develop sustained immunosuppression due to a reduced responsiveness of leukocytes to pathogens. Changes in cellular metabolism of leukocytes have been linked to this phenomenon and contribute to the ongoing immunological derangement.

Development of a novel murine femur fracture and fixation model.

Background: Animal models have been used for decades to simulate human fractures in the laboratory setting. Fracture models in mice are attractive because they offer a high volume, relatively low-cost method of investigating fracture healing characteristics. We report on the development of a novel murine femur fracture model that is rapid, reproducible and inexpensive.

A Novel Machine Learning Model Developed to Assist in Patient Selection for Outpatient Total Shoulder Arthroplasty.

Incidence and mechanism of injury of clavicle fractures in the NEISS database: Athletic and non athletic injuries.
