Human microglia play a pivotal role in neurological diseases, but we still have an incomplete understanding of microglial heterogeneity, which limits the development of targeted therapies directly modulating their state or function. Here, we use single-cell RNA sequencing to profile 215,680 live human microglia from 74 donors across diverse neurological diseases and CNS regions. We observe a central divide between oxidative and heterocyclic metabolism and identify microglial subsets associated with antigen presentation, motility and proliferation.

Pickering emulsions are excellent candidates for developing soft biosensors utilized for detecting native biomolecules such as peptides and proteins through the Surface-Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy (SERS) transduction mechanism. Here, we have developed a SERS sensor based on oil-in-water Pickering emulsions stabilized by Ag nanoparticles (Ag-NPs) with the Raman active molecule (4-Aminothiphenol, 4ATP) adsorbed to their surface. The structural properties and composition of the Pickering emulsion were tuned to meet the demands of the maximal optical response.

A "restrictive" red blood cell transfusion threshold, a hemoglobin concentration <7 to 8 g/dL, has long been recommended for most hospitalized patients including anemic patients with stable cardiovascular disease (CVD). Although no threshold recommendation is given for acute coronary syndromes (ACSs), recent evidence suggests that "liberal" rather than "restrictive" transfusion strategies are associated with significantly improved safety for hospitalized patients with stable CVD and/or ACS. This finding suggests that previously available data were misinterpreted.

The liver-derived selenium (Se) transporter selenoprotein P (SELENOP) declines in critical illness as a negative acute phase reactant and has recently been identified as an autoantigen. Hepatic selenoprotein biosynthesis and cotranslational selenocysteine insertion are sensitive to inflammation, therapeutic drugs, Se deficiency, and other modifiers. As severe burn injury induces a heavy inflammatory burden with concomitant Se depletion, we hypothesized an impairment of selenoprotein biosynthesis in the acute post-burn phase, potentially triggering the development of autoantibodies to SELENOP (SELENOP-aAb).

Radiation sensitive materials are among the most difficult materials to study, even more so if they exist only as nanometer-sized particles, where their size is either intentional because of enhanced properties at the nano-scale or it is unintentional because it is impossible to obtain bigger particles of the same structure. In both cases characterization methods need to be optimized to get the most information out of these particles before the radiation damages them to a point where their structure is altered. When the particles are crystallized, both characteristics, the small size and the beam sensitivity, call for electron diffraction as a privileged investigation tool.
