The unique collaboration of the UCSF School of Medicine with community and national leaders in corporate health promotion has, in less than three years, made the Corporate Health Promotion Research Program a valuable resource to participating corporations. We are able to offer them sound consultation on health promotion programs, based on state-of-the-art research, at minimal cost to the employer or employees. In addition, we are educating employers about quality programs and the process and need for evaluation, in an effort to generate sound findings on the effects of corporate health promotion programs.

To study whether fluorescent lighting at work might increase carcinogenesis, hairless mice were exposed to a bank of six 36 W standard fluorescent lamps (neutral-white) every workday for 8 h at an illuminance level of 1,000 lx. For comparison, other mice were exposed to UVB radiation or to simulated solar radiation. In experiment A the animals were irradiated for 6 weeks prior to the application of 7,12-dimethyl-benzanthracene once and--following an interval of 2 days--for 10 weeks after DMBA application.

We report on late cutaneous manifestations following exposition to gas (in particular N- and S-LOST) which had not been observed until within the last years. In the years 1945 to 1951, inadequate protective measures during disbandment of the "Heeresmunitionsanstalt St. Georgen" caused contamination and inhalation of these radiomimetics in about 400 persons.

A tumor is reported which originated rom an osteoma cutis and expanded into the surrounding tissue by infiltration and destruction. Histologically, there were no signs of malignancy. In cell culture there grew populations of bone-like tissue with highly active metabolism and negative contact inhibition.

A new routine-method is presented for the morphokinetic documentation of autoimmunologically induced processes in vitro via leukocyte long-term culture (LLC). The prominent rosette-sheeped autologous lymphocytes in deposition at central granulocytes are well defined. These autologous rosette-formations in LLC rank very high in diagnosis of autoimmundiseases, since this phenomenon is positive already, while the results of current methods in routine-serumexaminations are still negative.

The modified leucocyte-longterm culture is presented as adequate procedure for demonstration of tumor cells from peripheral blood of melanomalignoma patients. By means of the proliferation cinetics, an exact differentiation between tumor cells on one side, and melanophages, so called irritated monocytic forms and endothelial cells on the other side is possible. In this in vitro-system proliferative tumorcells from peripheral blood can be differed from non-proliferative ones.

A case of cancer en cuirasse is reported, deriving from a metastasizing malignant mixed tumor of the lacrimal gland. Based on histological criteria, the primary benigne prognosis of mixed tumors of lacrimal glands is discussed. According to sensitivity testing to cytostatic agents treatment with 375 mg of bleomycin achieved a recurrence-free interval of eight months.

Striae cutis atrophicae. Morphokinetic examinations in vitro.

Acta Derm Venereol Suppl (Stockh)

March 1980

The in vitro behaviour of fibroblasts and epidermis cells taken from recently developed striae distensae was studied in morphokinetic examinations in the cell culture and the results were discussed. The findings give rise to the assumption that the antianabolous effects of the adrenocorticotrophic hormones do not only indirectly cause the atrophia of the epidermis by decrease of the elasticity of the connective tissue, but it appears that primarily epidermis and corium are simultaneously involved in the pathomechanisms of these alterations by irreversible cellular damage.

In vitro growth of individual tumor cells is described, deriving from a rhabdomyosarcoma. There can be suggested two different cell-types: fibroblast-like cells with no particular aspects of morphology, and epitheloid-like cells, recognized from structure and nuclear-behaviour as tumor-giant cells. This methods advantages are discussed as a supplement of histological criteria, as well as its clinical pattern in future.

Combination of animal specific antigen reactions and tissue specific factors were found in a female patient with protein dermatitis (Jorth). Positive reactions to muscle-tissue of pigs but no reaction to renal tissue of pigs, tested intracutaneously were obtained. These observations suggest, that muscle specific aminoacids 3-methyl-histidine, monomethyl lysin and tri-methyl-lysin cause antigen reactions.

A 44 years old male is reported who had aquired dermatochalasis and urticaria pigmentosa at the same time. This is interpreted as a subsequent phenomenon of a dermatosparaxis endoplasmatica. Clinic, histology and electron microscopy are elaborated.
