Behavioral activation for live-in migrant home care workers and care recipients in Israel: a pilot study.

In a growing global trend, individuals are migrating to other countries to live with and care for older adults with dementia. Although this trend addresses the geriatric workforce shortage, workers and older adults often experience distress. In a pilot study in Israel, six migrant care workers participated in a six-week group intervention in which they learned to increase valued, enjoyable activities for themselves and the older adult with whom they lived (behavioral activation).

Transparency as a remedy against racketeering: preventing and restraining fraud by exposing Big Tobacco's dirty secrets.

The 1990s state litigation that resulted in the tobacco industry's initial document disclosure obligations fully expired in 2010. These obligations have been extended and enhanced until 2021 through a federal lawsuit against the tobacco industry over violations of the Racketeer Influenced Corrupt Organizations Act (RICO). In this special communication, we summarise and explain the new legal framework and enhanced document disclosure obligations of the major US tobacco companies.

In vitro and in vivo antimalarial efficacies of optimized tetracyclines.

With increasing resistance to existing antimalarials, there is an urgent need to discover new drugs at affordable prices for countries in which malaria is endemic. One approach to the development of new antimalarial drugs is to improve upon existing antimalarial agents, such as the tetracyclines. Tetracyclines exhibit potent, albeit relatively slow, action against malaria parasites, and doxycycline is used for both treatment (with other agents) and prevention of malaria.

Tobacco documents research methodology.

Tobacco documents research has developed into a thriving academic enterprise since its inception in 1995. The technology supporting tobacco documents archiving, searching and retrieval has improved greatly since that time, and consequently tobacco documents researchers have considerably more access to resources than was the case when researchers had to travel to physical archives and/or electronically search poorly and incompletely indexed documents. The authors of the papers presented in this supplement all followed the same basic research methodology.

Menthol cigarettes and smoking initiation: a tobacco industry perspective.

N-Hydroxybenzimidazole inhibitors of ExsA MAR transcription factor in Pseudomonas aeruginosa: In vitro anti-virulence activity and metabolic stability.

ExsA is a multiple adaptational response (MAR) transcription factor, regulating the expression of a virulence determinant, the type III secretion system (T3SS) in Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Non-cytotoxic, non-antibacterial N-hydroxybenzimidazoles were identified as effective inhibitors of ExsA-DNA binding, and their potential utility as anti-virulence agents for P. aeruginosa was demonstrated in a whole cell assay.

A method to improve false interpretation of the endometrial echo pattern as homogeneous hyperechogenic.

Endometrial echo patterns are generally evaluated and graded via transvaginal sonography; however, the uterine position can impede adequate visualization, giving the false impression of a hyperechogenic echo pattern before ovulation or oocyte retrieval. Transabdominal sonography can eliminate this error in the majority of cases when transvaginal ultrasound fails to provide diagnostic images of the endometrium.

Reevaluation of ethylene oxide hemolysis and irritation potential.

The in vitro hemolytic and in vivo mucosal irritation potential of ethylene oxide (EO) was investigated with standard procedures used to determine the biocompatibility of medical devices. Test solutions containing EO at concentrations of 25, 50, 100, 250, 500, 1,250, 2,500, 5,000, or 10,000 microg/mL were prepared in saline to simulate a worst-case aqueous extraction of standard medical devices containing 125, 250, 500, 1,250, 2,500, 6,250, 12,500, 25,000, or 50,000 microg/g of EO, respectively. Concentrations of EO up to 500 microg/mL were not hemolytic ( < 5% hemolysis after a 4-h exposure), whereas > or =1250 microg/mL of EO resulted in significant hemolysis.

Influence of nitrate, ascorbic acid, and nitrate reductase microorganisms on N-nitrosamine formation during Korean-style soysauce fermentation.

Traditional Korean soysauce samples were collected from households in Chinju, Gyeongnam, Korea and analysed for volatile N-nitrosamines. Five of 24 samples contained NDMA (range = 1.6-10.

Gastric nitrate reduction and nitrosation of trimethylurea in swine treated with pentagastrin or cimetidine.

Swine were treated with cimetidine in order to quantify the reduction of nitrate to nitrite and the gastric formation of N-nitrosotrimethylurea (NTMU) under conditions similar to those in the achlorhydric human stomach. Gastric-fistulated swine were instilled with 6.0 mmol of nitrate in 50 ml water, after which gastric nitrate, nitrite and pH were monitored.

Organic toxicants and mutagens in ashes from eighteen municipal refuse incinerators.

Ashes, obtained from about one-fourth of the operating municipal refuse incinerators in the United States, were analyzed for a range of organic toxicants and mutagens. Thirty percent of the ash samples, which consisted of bottom ash or bottom ash-fly ash mixtures, contained 20-74% organic matter. Thirty percent of the ashes contained direct-acting and/or promutagens which revertedSalmonella typhimurium TA98 or TA100.
