Strategies for Restructuring Dietetics Education Programs to Improve Nutrition Equity in Indigenous Populations: A Narrative Review.

Background/objectives: Particularly in racially and ethnically diverse countries, the necessity of providing individualized care to people seeking diet advice is increasingly recognized and embedded in practice guidelines. Some jurisdictions have a history of colonization with subjugation and marginalization of the Indigenous population, which has led to serious health inequities. One overarching strategy to reduce health inequities is to provide education through a decolonizing lens, so that graduate healthcare professionals, such as dietitians, have a better understanding of how to mitigate colonial attitudes, racism, stereotyping and other behaviours, thereby improving health equity.

Stratified Care in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy: A Comparative Evaluation of Predictive Modelling Approaches for Individualized Treatment: La stratification des soins pour l'orientation vers une thérapie cognitivo-comportementale: une évaluation comparative des approches de modélisation prédictive pour un traitement individualisé.

Objective: In response to high demand and prolonged wait times for cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) in Ontario, Canada, we developed predictive models to stratify patients into high- or low-intensity treatment, aiming to optimize limited healthcare resources.

Method: Using client records ( = 953) from Ontario Shores Centre for Mental Health Sciences (January 2017-2021), we estimated four binary outcome models to assign patients into complex and standard cases based on the probability of reliable improvement in Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9) and Generalized Anxiety Disorder-7 (GAD-7) scores. Background & Aims: Exocrine pancreatic insufficiency (EPI) contributes to malnutrition, marked by muscle loss during chemotherapy for advanced pancreatic cancer (aPC). Pancreatic enzyme replacement therapy (PERT) is recommended for patients with EPI; however, it's efficacy for attenuating muscle loss has not been demonstrated. We aimed to delineate the impact of PERT dose on muscle loss using a 7-year population-based cohort with aPC who were provided PERT at the discretion of their oncologist or dietitian according to clinical indications of EPI.

The target asymmetry , recoil asymmetry , and beam-target double polarization observable were determined in exclusive and photoproduction off quasi-free protons and, for the first time, off quasi-free neutrons. The experiment was performed at the electron stretcher accelerator ELSA in Bonn, Germany, with the Crystal Barrel/TAPS detector setup, using a linearly polarized photon beam and a transversely polarized deuterated butanol target. Effects from the Fermi motion of the nucleons within deuterium were removed by a full kinematic reconstruction of the final state invariant mass.

Muscle and Adipose Wasting despite Disease Control: Unaddressed Side Effects of Palliative Chemotherapy for Pancreatic Cancer.

Muscle and adipose wasting during chemotherapy for advanced pancreatic cancer (aPC) are associated with poor outcomes. We aimed to quantify the contributions of chemotherapy regimen and tumour progression to muscle and adipose wasting and evaluate the prognostic value of each tissue loss. Of all patients treated for aPC from 2013-2019 in Alberta, Canada ( = 504), computed-tomography (CT)-defined muscle and adipose tissue index changes (∆SMI, ∆ATI, cm/m) were measured for patients with CT images available both prior to and 12 ± 4 weeks after chemotherapy initiation ( = 210).

Call for standardization in assessment and reporting of muscle and adipose change using computed tomography analysis in oncology: A scoping review.

Investigators are increasingly measuring skeletal muscle (SM) and adipose tissue (AT) change during cancer treatment to understand impact on patient outcomes. Recent meta-analyses have reported high heterogeneity in this literature, representing uncertainty in the resulting estimates. Using the setting of palliative-intent chemotherapy as an exemplar, we aimed to systematically summarize the sources of variability among studies evaluating SM and AT change during cancer treatment and propose standards for future studies to enable reliable meta-analysis.

Adverse effects of systemic cancer therapy on skeletal muscle: myotoxicity comes out of the closet.

Purpose Of Review: Systemic cancer therapy-associated skeletal muscle wasting is emerging as a powerful impetus to the overall loss of skeletal muscle experienced by patients with cancer. This review explores the clinical magnitude and biological mechanisms of muscle wasting during systemic cancer therapy to illuminate this adverse effect. Emerging strategies for mitigation are also discussed.

With two recent studies reporting on prognostic implications of the spleen signal in diffusion-weighted magnetic resonance imaging in patients with plasma cell dyscrasias, the aim of this study was to correlate splenic Ga-Pentixafor uptake in multiple myeloma (MM) with clinical parameters and to evaluate its prognostic impact. Eighty-seven MM patients underwent molecular imaging with Ga-Pentixafor-PET/CT.

A descriptive study of syphilis testing in Manitoba, Canada, 2015-2019.

Background: In 2018, Manitoba had the highest reported rate of infectious syphilis in Canada, at over three times the national average. Infectious syphilis in Manitoba is centred on young, marginalized heterosexual couples in Winnipeg's inner-city. Subsequently, a public health crisis involving congenital syphilis emerged in Manitoba, just prior to the coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic.

Effectiveness of an Annular Closure Device to Prevent Recurrent Lumbar Disc Herniation: A Secondary Analysis With 5 Years of Follow-up.

Importance: Patients with large annular defects following lumbar microdiscectomy for disc herniation are at increased risk for symptomatic recurrence and reoperation.

Objective: To determine whether a bone-anchored annular closure device in addition to lumbar microdiscectomy resulted in lower reherniation and reoperation rates vs lumbar microdiscectomy alone.

Design, Setting, And Participants: This secondary analysis of a multicenter randomized clinical trial reports 5-year follow-up for enrolled patients between December 2010 and October 2014 at 21 clinical sites.

Fortified Snack Preferences among Patients with Cancer.

Fortified snacks can increase nutrient intake among patients with cancer. The aim of this study was to identify snack foods preferred as potential vehicles for fortification and how experienced symptoms influence preferences. A study-specific survey among 150 patients identified snack foods for fortification, influence of symptom presence, desired nutrients and characteristics of a fortified snack, and perception of oral nutritional supplements.

Acceptance of oat-based beverages tailored for patients with cancer.

Oat-based beverages are a nutritious product with the potential to support increased nutrient intake of patients with cancer. The aim of this research was to evaluate the sensory acceptance of oat-based beverages and perceptions of oats among patients with cancer as future vehicles for nutrient delivery. In study 1, three flavors of oat-beverages were well accepted without significant difference in liking among flavors or serving temperature, or between patients with cancer and healthy participants.

Measurement of the Charge-Averaged Elastic Lepton-Proton Scattering Cross Section by the OLYMPUS Experiment.

We report the first measurement of the average of the electron-proton and positron-proton elastic scattering cross sections. This lepton charge-averaged cross section is insensitive to the leading effects of hard two-photon exchange, giving more robust access to the proton's electromagnetic form factors. The cross section was extracted from data taken by the OLYMPUS experiment at DESY, in which alternating stored electron and positron beams were scattered from a windowless gaseous hydrogen target.

Improved Primary Staging of Marginal-Zone Lymphoma by Addition of CXCR4-Directed PET/CT.

PET/CT with F-FDG is an integral component in the primary staging of most lymphomas. However, its utility is limited in marginal-zone lymphoma (MZL) because of inconsistent F-FDG avidity. One diagnostic alternative could be the targeting of C-X-C motif chemokine receptor 4 (CXCR4), shown to be expressed by MZL cells.

Measurement of the helicity asymmetry for the reaction : The CBELSA/TAPS Collaboration.

A measurement of the double-polarization observable for the reaction is reported. The data were taken with the CBELSA/TAPS experiment at the ELSA facility in Bonn using the Bonn frozen-spin butanol (C H OH) target, which provided longitudinally-polarized protons. Circularly-polarized photons were produced via bremsstrahlung of longitudinally-polarized electrons.

Computed-Tomography Body Composition Analysis Complements Pre-Operative Nutrition Screening in Colorectal Cancer Patients on an Enhanced Recovery after Surgery Pathway.

Pre-operative nutrition screening is recommended to identify cancer patients at risk of malnutrition, which is associated with poor outcomes. Low muscle mass (sarcopenia) and lipid infiltration to muscle cells (myosteatosis) are similarly associated with poor outcomes but are not routinely screened for. We investigated the prevalence of sarcopenia and myosteatosis across the nutrition screening triage categories of the Patient-Generated Subjective Global Assessment Short Form (PG-SGA) in a pre-operative colorectal cancer (CRC) cohort.

Background: This randomized, open-label phase 2a study investigated the safety/tolerability, pharmacokinetics, and efficacy of olorinab-a highly selective, peripherally acting, full agonist of the cannabinoid receptor 2-in patients with Crohn's disease (CD) experiencing abdominal pain.

Methods: Eligible subjects 18-80 years of age with quiescent to mildly active CD were randomized to receive olorinab 25 or 100 mg three times daily for 8 weeks. The primary objective was to assess safety/tolerability.

Observation of the pη^{'} Cusp in the New Precise Beam Asymmetry Σ Data for γp→pη.

Data on the beam asymmetry Σ in the photoproduction of η mesons off protons are reported for tagged photon energies from 1130 to 1790 MeV (mass range from W=1748  MeV to W=2045  MeV). The data cover the full solid angle that allows for a precise moment analysis. For the first time, a strong cusp effect in a polarization observable has been observed that is an effect of a branch-point singularity at the pη^{'} threshold [E_{γ}=1447  MeV (W=1896  MeV)].

English version of the self-administered Fabry Pain Questionnaire for adult patients.

Background: Pain is an early symptom of Fabry disease (FD) and is characterized by a unique phenotype with mainly episodic acral and triggerable burning pain. Recently, we designed and validated the first pain questionnaire for adult FD patients in an interview and a self-administered version in German: the Würzburg Fabry Pain Questionnaire (FPQ). We now report the validation of the English version of the self-administered FPQ (enFPQ).

Spray drift mitigation using opposing synchronized air-blast sprayers.

Background: Pesticide drift is a serious environmental and safety concern that affects all of US agriculture. A number of mitigation techniques to reduce pesticide drift have been recommended by industry, academic and government agencies. These techniques are very costly or reduce the efficacy of the pest control product and have not been implemented by US agriculture.

Ketogenic and low-sugar diets for patients with cancer: perceptions and practices of medical oncologists in Canada.

Purpose: Many patients with cancer are interested in complementary therapies, including strategies such as reduced carbohydrate diets. Guidelines regarding the use of these diets during cancer treatment are lacking; therefore, we aimed to explore the perceptions and practices of medical oncologists in Canada regarding low-sugar and ketogenic diets.

Method: A cross-sectional, online multiple-choice survey was distributed to 206 Canadian medical oncologists.
