  • The survivorship care plan (SCP) is designed to enhance communication between oncologists and primary care physicians, but internal medicine residency programs often lack proper training on this topic.
  • A survey conducted among internal medicine trainees found that a significant number were unaware of SCPs, with 78.3% and 92.6% reporting no training during residency or medical school, respectively.
  • Main barriers identified included insufficient information about SCPs, mistrust in patient-reported histories, and uncertainty regarding patient eligibility for SCPs, highlighting a need for improved education and resources in this area.

  • ACGME requires Internal Medicine programs to teach residents about perioperative medicine, which can be difficult in community hospitals due to limited resources and low surgical volume.
  • A study was conducted at MetroWest Medical Center to introduce an online educational module on perioperative cardiac risk assessment, involving 24 internal medicine residents, with evaluations before and after the program to measure knowledge improvement.
  • Results showed a significant increase in residents’ scores after the educational intervention, especially among PGY-1 and PGY-2 residents, indicating enhanced awareness and knowledge that can lead to better performance in consult services.

  • This study investigates the link between thyroid dysfunction (both hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism) and the risk of developing Parkinson's disease (PD) through a systematic review and meta-analysis of existing research.
  • The analysis included 3 cohort studies and 6 case-control studies, revealing a higher likelihood of PD in patients with hypothyroidism (pooled odds ratio [OR] 1.56) and hyperthyroidism (pooled OR 1.57).
  • Both conditions showed a significant association with PD, and the study found no indication of publication bias in the results.

Prekallikrein (PK) deficiency, also known as Fletcher factor deficiency, is a very rare disorder inherited as an autosomal recessive trait. It is usually identified incidentally in asymptomatic patients with a prolonged activated partial thromboplastin time (aPTT). In this article, we present the case of a 52-year-old woman, with no prior personal or family history of thrombotic or hemorrhagic disorders, who was noted to have substantial protracted aPTT through the routine coagulation assessment before a kidney biopsy.

Background And Aims: Conventional endoscopic submucosal dissection (C-ESD) is a technically demanding procedure with prolonged procedure times and higher risk of adverse events. To overcome the procedural difficulty of ESD, several traction-assisted techniques (T-ESD) have been developed to improve visualization of the submucosa in hopes to facilitate safe and effective dissection. The aim of this study was to conduct a meta-analysis that compares short-term outcomes (30-day) of T-ESD to C-ESD.
