Article Synopsis
  • Crocetin glycosides, like crocin, are recognized as beneficial for health, particularly in preventing chronic diseases and cancer, but their stability during cooking is not fully understood.!* -
  • This study found that crocetin glycosides in saffron remain stable when boiled for 20 minutes, but undergo structural changes when grilled at high temperatures, affecting their bioactivity.!* -
  • New crocetin glycosides were identified in freesia flowers, and their potential as edible flowers was explored; both saffron and freesia glycosides demonstrated moderate abilities to quench singlet oxygen, indicating antioxidant properties.!*

A systematic study is conducted to compare the performances and stability of active layers employing a high performance electron donor (PBDB-T) combined with state-of-the-art fullerene (PC BM), nonfullerene (ITIC), and polymer (N2200) electron acceptors. The impact of the chemical nature of the acceptor on the durability of organic solar cells (OSCs) is elucidated by monitoring their photovoltaic performances under light exposure or dark conditions in the presence of oxygen. PC BM molecules exhibit a higher resistance toward oxidation compared to nonfullerene acceptors.

Magnetotactic bacteria are a unique group of bacteria that synthesize a magnetic organelle termed the magnetosome, which they use to assist with their magnetic navigation in a specific type of bacterial motility called magneto-aerotaxis. Cytoskeletal filaments consisting of the actin-like protein MamK are associated with the magnetosome chain. Previously, the function of MamK was thought to be in positioning magnetosome organelles; this was proposed based on observations via electron microscopy still images.

Osteoclastogenesis inhibitory factor (OCIF) is a novel member of the Tumor Necrosis Factor Receptor superfamily and identical with Osteoprotegerin (OPG) discovered by Amgen researchers. OCIF/OPG is a decoy receptor (a soluble receptor that acts as an antagonist) that binds to osteoblast cells via Receptor Activator of NF-kappa B Ligand (RANKL) involved in the signal transduction between osteoblast cells and osteoclastic progenitor cells, eventually suppressing differentiation of the progenitor cells into osteoclasts. The balance between the OCIF/OPG and RANKL is regulated by cytokines and hormones.

Recombinant human calcitonin (rh-CT) has been developed as an agent for patients with excessive bone resorption to replace calcitonins from animal species, which are associated with tolerance problems. In this study, inhibitory effects of rh-CT against bone resorption were examined in thyroparathyroidectomized (TPTX) rats, the animal model of accelerated bone resorption induced by administering a synthetic retinoid (arotinoid). The arotinoid-treated TPTX rats exhibited signs of stimulated bone resorption, such as hypercalcemia, reduced bone mineral density, and inferior bone strength.

In order to examine whether 8-isopentenylnaringenin (1), which has been proven to possess estrogen agonist activity in in vitro tests, also produces in vivo estrogenic properties, the effects of 1 on uterus and on bone metabolism were determined in ovariectomized rats. Rats were ovariectomized and treated with 1 at 30 mg/kg/day subcutaneously for two weeks or 17 beta-estradiol at 0.01 mg/kg/day subcutaneously for two weeks.

Polyclonal anti-BSA antibodies were ractionated by stepwise elution from an immobilized BSA column by decreasing pH or increasing the concentration of NaSCN. The binding affinities of each fraction and original globulin under physiological conditions and their dependence on pH and ionic environments were compared. Fractions with high association constant under physiological conditions did not necessarily show antigen binding affinity over a wide pH range, but they retained a high affinity at higher ionic strength of NaSCN.
