This paper describes the production and chemical separation of the 163Ho isotope that will be used in several nuclear physics experiments aiming at measuring the neutrino mass as well as the neutron cross section of the 163Ho isotope. For this purpose, several batches of enriched 162Er have been irradiated at the Institut Laue-Langevin high flux reactor to finally produce 6 mg or 100 MBq of the desired 163Ho isotope. A portion of the Er/Ho mixture is then subjected to a sophisticated chemical separation involving ion exchange chromatography to isolate the Ho product from the Er target material.

We report on the measurement of the ^{7}Be(n,p)^{7}Li cross section from thermal to approximately 325 keV neutron energy, performed in the high-flux experimental area (EAR2) of the n_TOF facility at CERN. This reaction plays a key role in the lithium yield of the big bang nucleosynthesis (BBN) for standard cosmology. The only two previous time-of-flight measurements performed on this reaction did not cover the energy window of interest for BBN, and they showed a large discrepancy between each other.

The energy-dependent cross section of the ^{7}Be(n,α)^{4}He reaction, of interest for the so-called cosmological lithium problem in big bang nucleosynthesis, has been measured for the first time from 10 meV to 10 keV neutron energy. The challenges posed by the short half-life of ^{7}Be and by the low reaction cross section have been overcome at n_TOF thanks to an unprecedented combination of the extremely high luminosity and good resolution of the neutron beam in the new experimental area (EAR2) of the n_TOF facility at CERN, the availability of a sufficient amount of chemically pure ^{7}Be, and a specifically designed experimental setup. Coincidences between the two alpha particles have been recorded in two Si-^{7}Be-Si arrays placed directly in the neutron beam.

The 63Ni(n,γ) cross section has been measured for the first time at the neutron time-of-flight facility n_TOF at CERN from thermal neutron energies up to 200 keV. In total, capture kernels of 12 (new) resonances were determined. Maxwellian averaged cross sections were calculated for thermal energies from   kT=5-100  keV with uncertainties around 20%.

The work presented here is a new and precise measurement of the half-life of (166m)Ho by determining the activity concentration, using an ionisation chamber calibrated for this nuclide, and measuring the number of (166m)Ho atoms using multi-collector inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (MC-ICP-MS). Since the isotope (166)Er interferes with the mass spectrometric measurement, Er has to be eliminated from the (166m)Ho radioactive solution. The elimination was achieved using ion-exchange chromatography with the cation exchange resin Dowex AG 50W-X8 and 2-Hydroxybutanoic acid as the mobile phase.

Background: Amdoxovir acts synergistically with zidovudine in vitro and the combination prevents or delays the selection of thymidine analogue and K65R mutations. In silico studies have shown that a reduced dose of zidovudine (200 mg) results in decreased zidovudine-monophosphate levels, associated with toxicity, while maintaining zidovudine-triphosphate levels, which are associated with antiviral effects. We estimate the two-photon exchange contribution to elastic electron-proton scattering at large momentum transfer Q(2). It is shown that the leading two-photon exchange amplitude behaves as 1/Q(4), and can be expressed in a model independent way in terms of the leading twist nucleon distribution amplitudes. Using several models for the nucleon distribution amplitudes, we provide estimates for existing data and for ongoing experiments.

In vitro selection studies and data from large genotype databases from clinical studies have demonstrated that tenofovir disoproxil fumarate and abacavir sulfate select for the K65R mutation in the human immunodeficiency virus type 1 polymerase region. Furthermore, other novel non-thymine nucleoside reverse transcriptase (RT) inhibitors also select for this mutation in vitro. Studies performed in vitro and in humans suggest that viruses containing the K65R mutation remained susceptible to zidovudine (ZDV) and other thymine nucleoside antiretroviral agents.

Isotopic analyses of radioactive materials such as irradiated nuclear fuel are of major importance for the optimization of the nuclear fuel cycle and for safeguard aspects. Among the mass-spectrometric techniques available, inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) and thermal ionization mass spectrometry are the most frequently applied methods for nuclear applications. Because of the low detection limits, the ability to analyze the isotopic composition of the elements and the applicability of the techniques for measuring stable as well as radioactive nuclides with similar sensitivity, both mass-spectrometric techniques are an excellent amendment to classical radioactivity counting methods.

Rifalazil, a second-generation rifamycin, is being evaluated for the treatment of sexually transmitted disease and gastrointestinal infections. We determined whether rifalazil influences CYP3A4 metabolism by studying the effect of a single oral, 25 mg dose of rifalazil administered to healthy postmenopausal women, on the steady-state pharmacokinetics (PK) of ethinyl estradiol (EE) during administration of Ortho-Novum 1/35 (EE/NET). Noncompartmental PK and sequential statistical analyses were performed to establish if and when subjects achieved steady-state EE plasma concentrations and to determine whether this steady state was altered by rifalazil administration.

Rifalazil is a new antibiotic structurally related to rifampin but devoid of the metabolic liabilities typically associated with the rifamycin class of antibiotics. A randomized, 3-way crossover study in healthy male volunteers (n = 12) investigated the safety and pharmacokinetics of a single 25-mg oral rifalazil dose administered under a standard breakfast containing fat as 30% of calories, a high-fat breakfast containing fat as 60% of calories, and an overnight fast of 10 hours with a 21- to 28-day washout between doses. Systemic exposure to rifalazil based on Cmax, AUC(0-Tlast), and AUC(0-infinity) was increased progressively as the fat content of the test breakfast was increased from 30% to 60% compared with fasting.
