Segmentectomy for Inner Location Small-Sized Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer: Is It Feasible?

Background: The efficacy of segmentectomy for inner small-sized non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC) remains unknown. We aimed to elucidate whether segmentectomy for inner small-sized NSCLC, defined using a novel 3-dimensional measuring method, yields feasible oncologic outcomes compared with segmentectomy for outer lesions.

Methods: We retrospectively analyzed patients with small-sized (<2 cm) cN0 NSCLC who underwent segmentectomy between January 2007 and December 2020.

Usefulness of rapid MR angiography using two-point Dixon for evaluating carotid and aortic plaques.

Purpose: Recently, various magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) modalities have been developed to easily detect carotid and aortic plaques, but these techniques are time-consuming and vulnerable to motion artifacts. We investigated the utility of a gradient echo MRI technique known as liver acquisition with volume acceleration flexible (LAVA-Flex) to detect carotid and aortic atherosclerotic plaques.

Methods: Ten patients who underwent carotid endarterectomy (CEA) were assessed regarding the correspondence between LAVA-Flex findings and the histopathology of excised carotid plaques.

Anxiety-like behavior induced by a combination of doxorubicin and cyclophosphamide may be mediated by serotonin (5-HT) receptor hyperactivity. The anxiolytic effects of fluoxetine may be inhibited by this combination. The present study examined the mechanisms underlying anxiety-like behavior induced by the combination doxorubicin and cyclophosphamide in rats.

First Clinical Trial of a Newly Developed, Low Menaquinone-7, Fermented Soybean Natto in Warfarin-Dependent Patients.

fermented soybeans (natto) contain high vitamin K2 levels, mostly as menaquinone-7 (MK-7), and must be avoided by warfarin-dependent patients. This is the first report which demonstrates the characteristics and clinical relevance of a low MK-7 natto for such patients. We generated a novel, mutant strain TTCC2051 with short-term fermentation and reduced MK-7 production, yielding 19-24% of the normal MK-7 content.

Ga- and At-Labeled RGD Peptides for Radiotheranostics with Multiradionuclides.

Probes for radiotheranostics could be produced by introducing radionuclides with similar chemical characteristics into the same precursors. We recently developed an At-labeled RGD peptide and a corresponding radioiodine-labeled RGD peptide. Both labeled peptides accumulated in large quantities in the tumor with similar biodistribution, demonstrating their usefulness for radiotheranostics.

Hypercapnia versus normocapnia for emergence from desflurane anaesthesia: Single-blinded randomised controlled study.

Background: Rapid emergence from general anaesthesia is desirable only if safety is not sacrificed. Mechanical hyperventilation during hypercapnia produced by carbon dioxide infusion into the inspired gas mixture or by rebreathing was reported to shorten emergence time from inhalation anaesthesia.

Objectives: To test the hypothesis that hypercapnia produced by hypoventilation before desflurane cessation shortens emergence time from general anaesthesia (primary hypothesis) and reduces undesirable cardiorespiratory events.

Fluorometric Quantification of Human Platelet Polyphosphate Using 4',6-Diamidine-2-phenylindole Dihydrochloride: Applications in the Japanese Population.

Polyphosphate (polyP), a biopolymer of inorganic phosphate, is widely distributed in living organisms. In platelets, polyP is released upon activation and plays important roles in coagulation and tissue regeneration. However, the lack of a specific quantification method has delayed the in-depth study of polyP.

Impact of Metabolic Activity in Hepatocellular Carcinoma: Association With Immune Status and Vascular Formation.

We evaluated the prognostic value of fluorine-18 fluorodeoxyglucose (F-FDG) positron emission tomography/computed tomography (PET/CT) in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Their association with programmed death ligand 1 (PD-L1) expression and vascular formation was further investigated. In this retrospective study, using a database of 418 patients who had undergone F-FDG PET/CT before hepatic resection for HCC, immunohistochemical staining of PD-L1, clusters of differentiation (CD) 8, CD68, and CD34 was performed.

Structural Investigation of Photochemical Intermediates in Solution by Cold UV Spectroscopy in the Gas Phase: Photosubstitution of Dicyanobenzenes by Allylsilanes.

Electrospray ion sources with an in-line quartz cell were constructed to produce photochemical intermediates in solution. These ion sources can detect photochemical intermediates having lifetimes longer than a few seconds. Intermediates formed by photosubstitution of 1,4-dicyanobenzene (DCB) by allyltrimethylsilane (AMS) in acetonitrile using a Xe lamp were injected into the mass spectrometer.

Background: The lower oesophageal sphincter (LOS) barrier serves to prevent regurgitation of gastric contents. Although general anaesthesia depresses its function, its recovery process during emergence from anaesthesia has not been systematically examined.

Objective: To explore whether recovery of lower oesophageal barrier function differed between patients receiving a mixture of 1 mg atropine and 2 mg neostigmine and those receiving 2 mg kg-1 sugammadex during emergence from anaesthesia.

Characterization of hybrid seed failure in Prunus provides insight into conserved or lineage-specific hybrid incompatibility mechanisms in plant species. Postzygotic hybrid incompatibility resulting from a cross between different species involves complex mechanisms occurring at various developmental stages. Embryo arrest, followed by seed abortion, is the first stage of such incompatibility reactions and inhibits hybrid seed development.

Differential cytokine profiles in pediatric patients with PFAPA syndrome and recurrent tonsillitis.

Objective : An attempt was made to identify characteristic cytokine profiles to distinguish periodic fever with aphthous stomatitis, pharyngitis and cervical adenitis syndrome (PFAPAS) from recurrent tonsillitis, of which clinical manifestations are similar to those of PFAPAS in children. Methods : Serum concentrations of IL-6, IL-4 and IFN-γ were measured during febrile episodes in pediatric patients. Results : The levels of IL-6 during febrile episodes were markedly increased above the upper limit of normal ranges in patients with both PFAPAS and recurrent tonsillitis, but there were no significant differences between groups.

A 61‒year‒old woman observed that she had a lower limb edema approximately 1 month ago and began to feel a general malaise. The symptom was caused by multiple liver metastases, and the primary lesion was suspected to be an ovarian cancer. Peritoneal disseminations throughout the abdominal cavity were found in the exploratory laparotomy.

A non-canonical PRC1 (PRC1.6) prevents precocious meiotic onset. Germ cells alleviate its negative effect by reducing their amount of MAX, a component of PRC1.

Evaluation of spice and herb as phyto-derived selective modulators of human retinaldehyde dehydrogenases using a simple in vitro method.

Selective modulation of retinaldehyde dehydrogenases (RALDHs)-the main aldehyde dehydrogenase (ALDH) enzymes converting retinal into retinoic acid (RA), is very important not only in the RA signaling pathway but also for the potential regulatory effects on RALDH isozyme-specific processes and RALDH-related cancers. However, very few selective modulators for RALDHs have been identified, partly due to variable overexpression protocols of RALDHs and insensitive activity assay that needs to be addressed. In the present study, deletion of the N-terminal disordered regions is found to enable simple preparation of all RALDHs and their closest paralog ALDH2 using a single protocol.
