Chronic complete spinal cord injury (SCI) is difficult to treat because of scar formation and cavitary lesions. While human iPS cell-derived neural stem/progenitor cell (hNS/PC) therapy shows promise, its efficacy is limited without the structural support needed to address cavitary lesions. Our study investigated a combined approach involving surgical scar resection, decellularized extracellular matrix (dECM) hydrogel as a scaffold, and hNS/PC transplantation.

Background: The COVID-19 pandemic had a profound impact on cancer screening, diagnosis, and treatment procedures. We speculated that during the COVID-19 pandemic, sufficient medical resources were maintained in board-certified hospitals, resulting in favorable short-term outcomes, whereas hospital functions in non-board-certified hospitals declined, leading to mortality increase. The aim of this study is to investigate the impact of COVID-19 pandemic on short-term outcomes after esophagectomy, based on the scale of the facilities.

Article Synopsis
  • Singlet fission (SF) is a process that turns one singlet exciton into two triplet excitons, which can enhance energy transfer in materials.
  • The study explored SF dynamics in specific linear heterotrimer systems made from different pentacene derivatives to understand how substituents affect exciton behavior.
  • The findings suggest that appropriate substituent choices can significantly increase the efficiency of triplet exciton migration due to quantum interference effects that emerge from reduced structural symmetry.

Background: Despite recent medical advancements, surgery for hilar cholangiocarcinoma is associated with high complication and mortality rates. This may be partly attributed to the absence of established preoperative liver evaluation criteria for safe surgery. This study aimed to propose a reliable indicator for safe and well-planned management of major hepatectomy with extrahepatic bile duct resection.

Background: Peritoneal metastasis, a major complication of colorectal cancer (CRC), often leads to poor quality of life and unfavorable outcomes. Despite numerous studies characterizing its biological features in CRC, intratumor heterogeneity and interactions between cancer cells and tumor microenvironment cells remain poorly understood.

Methods: To explore these aspects, we performed single-cell transcriptome analysis of matched primary tumor and peritoneal metastasis samples from a treatment-naïve patient.

Purpose: Adjuvant chemotherapy (AC) for stage III disease is recognized as a standard treatment and is routinely performed in patients with colon cancer (CC). However, the recommendation for AC is mainly based on studies performed in past environments, where D3 lymphadenectomy was not routinely performed.

Methods: We retrospectively analyzed CC patients who underwent curative resection with D3 lymphadenectomy in Keio Surveillance Epidemiology and End Results (K-SEER) database.

  • Enfortumab Vedotin (EV) is an effective treatment for advanced urothelial carcinoma (UC) patients who have already undergone other therapies, but there’s limited understanding of the factors that impact patient outcomes.
  • A retrospective study was conducted to identify clinical factors affecting progression-free survival (PFS) and overall survival (OS) in these patients, leading to the development of a new risk classification model based on identified prognostic factors.
  • The study found that high levels of C-reactive protein and hypercalcemia were significant predictors of patient outcomes, allowing for the classification of patients into three distinct risk groups, which showed notable differences in survival rates.

  • Trivalent europium (Eu(III)) complexes emit bright luminescence due to energy transfer from antenna ligands, specifically bidentate β-diketonates, although the mechanism was not fully understood before this study.
  • The researchers employed time-resolved photoluminescence and femtosecond transient absorption spectroscopy to detail the energy transfer steps in the [Eu(hfa)(TPPO)] complex, revealing processes like intersystem crossing and energy transfer to Eu(III).
  • Their findings show that direct bonds in bidentate ligands promote efficient energy transfer, and understanding these processes can help in designing better luminescent materials for future research.
