Objective: To evaluate predictive ability of a novel combined index, Charlson comorbidity index and C-reactive protein (CCI-CRP), for outcomes in renal cell carcinoma (RCC), and compare predictive outcomes with of CCI-CRP to its separate components and to the UCLA integrated staging system (UISS).
Patients And Methods: We retrospectively analyzed INMARC registry of RCC patients. Receiver Operator Characteristics (ROC) analysis was fitted to identify threshold defining low-CRP (LCRP) and high-CRP (HCRP).
Over the years, several imaging techniques have been used in the diagnosis and management of testicular cancer. We compartmentalize disease stages into preorchiectomy, stage 1, initial stage 2 and 3 and postchemotherapy stage 2 and 3. We then elaborate on various imaging modalities that are relevant to each of these stages.

Circulating levels of germ cell tumor (GCT)-associated miRNAs, such as miR-371a-3p, can be utilized as efficient and cost-effective alternatives in diagnosing and managing patients presenting with GCTs. This quality of miRNAs has demonstrated favorable performance characteristics as a reliable blood-based biomarker with high diagnostic accuracy compared to current serum tumor markers (STMs), including α-fetoprotein (AFP), beta human chorionic gonadotropin (β-hCG), and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH).

Given the presence of a promotor-associated CpG island for its host gene, EVL, we hypothesized that intronic miR-342-3p is a tumor suppressor co-regulated with host gene by promoter DNA methylation in B cell lymphoma.
Results: By bisulfite pyrosequencing-verified methylation-specific PCR (MSP), EVL/MIR342 methylation was detected in five (50%) lymphoma cell lines but not normal peripheral blood and tonsils.
Highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) H5N1 virus continues to pose pandemic threat, but there is a lack of understanding of its pathogenesis. We compared the apoptotic responses triggered by HPAI H5N1 and low pathogenic H1N1 viruses using physiologically relevant respiratory epithelial cells. We demonstrated that H5N1 viruses delayed apoptosis in primary human bronchial and alveolar epithelial cells (AECs) compared to H1N1 virus.

To identify molecular determinants that allowed efficient transmission of the pandemic H1N1 virus among humans, we evaluated the direct-contact and respiratory-droplet transmissibility in ferrets of representative swine influenza viruses of different lineages obtained through a 13-y surveillance program in southern China. Whereas all viruses studied were transmitted by direct contact with varying efficiency, respiratory-droplet transmissibility (albeit inefficient) was observed only in the TRsw-like A/swine/Hong Kong/915/04 (sw915) (H1N2) virus.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFWe investigated the tropism, host responses, and virulence of two variants of A/Quail/Hong Kong/G1/1997 (H9N2) (H9N2/G1) with D253N and Q591K in the PB2 protein in primary human macrophages and bronchial epithelium in vitro and in mice in vivo. Virus with PB2 D253N and Q591K had greater polymerase activity in minireplicon assays, induced more tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α) in human macrophages, replicated better in differentiated normal human bronchial epithelial (NHBE) cells, and was more pathogenic for mice. Taken together, our studies help define the viral genetic determinants that contribute to pathogenicity of H9N2 viruses.

The novel pandemic influenza H1N1 (H1N1pdm) virus of swine origin causes mild disease but occasionally leads to acute respiratory distress syndrome and death. It is important to understand the pathogenesis of this new disease in humans. We compared the virus tropism and host-responses elicited by pandemic H1N1pdm and seasonal H1N1 influenza viruses in ex vivo cultures of human conjunctiva, nasopharynx, bronchus, and lung, as well as in vitro cultures of human nasopharyngeal, bronchial, and alveolar epithelial cells.
