Article Synopsis
  • Collagen anisotropy provides important structural cues that influence how cells behave in tissue engineering, but traditional 3D printing methods often fail to create scaffolds with this property.
  • This study introduced a 4D printing technique combining extrusion-based printing with magnetic alignment to create collagen scaffolds that have a high degree of anisotropy.
  • Results showed that while adjusting materials and printing conditions improved collagen alignment, it sometimes compromised print fidelity; nevertheless, scaffolds successfully guided human mesenchymal stem cells towards tendon or ligament-like differentiation, highlighting their potential in musculoskeletal tissue engineering.

Anisotropically aligned collagen scaffolds mimic the microarchitectural properties of native tissue, possess superior mechanical properties, and provide the essential physicochemical cues to guide cell response. Biofabrication methodologies to align collagen fibers include mechanical, electrical, magnetic, and microfluidic approaches. Magnetic alignment of collagen was first published in 1983 but widespread use of this technique was hindered mainly due to the low diamagnetism of collagen molecules and the need for very strong tesla-order magnetic fields.

Using Langevin dynamic simulations, a simple coarse-grained model of a DNA protein construct is used to study the DNA rupture and the protein unfolding. We identify three distinct states: (i) zipped DNA and collapsed protein, (ii) unzipped DNA and stretched protein, and (iii) unzipped DNA and collapsed protein. Here, we find a phase diagram that shows these states depending on the size of the DNA handle and the protein.

Collective systems self-organize to form globally ordered spatiotemporal patterns. Finding appropriate measures to characterize the order in these patterns will contribute to our understanding of the principles of self-organization in all collective systems. Here we examine a new measure based on the entropy of the neighbor distance distributions in the characterization of collective patterns.

A major virulence trait of () is its ability to enter a dormant state within its human host. Since cell division is intimately linked to metabolic shut down, understanding the mechanism of septum formation and its integration with other events in the division pathway is likely to offer clues to the molecular basis of dormancy. The genome lacks obvious homologues of several conserved cell division proteins, and this study was aimed at identifying and functionally characterising mycobacterial homologues of the septum site specification protein MinD ( MinD).

The study explores whether the epileptic networks associate with predetermined seizure onset zone (SOZ) identified from other modalities such as electroencephalogram/video electroencephalogram/structural MRI (EEG/VEEG/sMRI) and with the degree of resting-state functional MRI/positron emission tomography (RS-fMRI/PET) coupling. Here, we have analyzed the subgroup of patients who reported having a seizure on the day of scan as postictal cases and compared the findings with interictal cases (seizure-free interval).  We performed independent component analysis (ICA) on RS-fMRI and 20 ICA were hand-labeled as large scale, noise, downstream, and epilepsy networks (Epinets) based on their profile in spatial, time series, and power spectrum domains.

Collagen methacrylation is a promising approach to generate photo-cross-linkable cell-laden hydrogels with improved mechanical properties. However, the impact of species-based variations in amino acid composition and collagen isolation method on methacrylation degree (MD) and its subsequent effects on the physical properties of methacrylated collagen (CMA) hydrogels and cell response are unknown. Herein, we compared the effects of three collagen species (bovine, human, and rat), two collagen extraction methods (pepsin digestion and acid extraction), and two photoinitiators (lithium phenyl-2,4,6-trimethylbenzoylphosphinate (LAP) and Irgacure-2959 (I-2959)) on the physical properties of CMA hydrogels, printability and mesenchymal stem cell (MSC) response.

DNA-mediated self-assembly of colloids has emerged as a powerful tool to assemble the materials of prescribed structure and properties. The uniqueness of the approach lies in the sequence-specific, thermo-reversible hybridization of the DNA-strands based on Watson-Crick base pairing. Grafting particles with DNA strands, thus, results into building blocks that are fully programmable, and can, in principle, be assembled into any desired structure.
