A blind identification method of transfer functions in feedback systems is introduced for examination of dynamical activities of cortices by magnetoencephalography study. Somatosensory activities are examined in 5 Hz periodical median nerve stimulus. In the present paper, we will try two careful preprocessing procedures for the identification method to obtain impulse responses between primary somatosensory cortices.

Atrial- and brain-type natriuretic peptides (ANP and BNP, respectively) have been shown to exert potent lipolytic action in adipocytes. A family of natriuretic peptide receptors (NPRs), NPR-1, NPR-2, and NPR-3, mediates their physiologic effects. NPR-1 and NPR-2 are receptor guanylyl cyclases, while NPR-3 lacks enzymatic activity and functions primarily as a clearance receptor for natriuretic peptides.

We analyzed the profile of the genes expressed in human adipose tissue and identified the fat-derived molecules, adiponectin and aquaporin 7, which modulate glucose and lipid metabolism. The same Bodymap analysis revealed abundant expression of the decidual protein induced by progesterone (DEPP) in the white adipose tissue. Northern blot analysis confirmed that human DEPP mRNA was highly expressed in white adipose tissue.

Sleep-disordered breathing (SDB), especially sleep apnea-hypopnea syndrome, is often observed in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus; but there are only a few studies on SDB in Japanese diabetic subjects. We investigated the prevalence of SDB in diabetic patients; associations between severity of sleep apnea (SA) and clinical factors, visceral fat, and adiponectin; and associations between type of SA and clinical factors. In the present study, 40 Japanese diabetic patients underwent overnight cardiorespiratory monitoring, and night and morning measurements of serum adiponectin concentrations.

The mitochondrial (mt) DNA C5178A and A10398G polymorphisms have been reported to be associated with mental disorders such as bipolar disorder. However, the effects of these polymorphisms on temperament in healthy people are poorly understood. Evaluating healthy subjects can have the advantage of providing new strategies for maintaining psychological health and preventing mental illness.

Postprandial metabolic dysregulation plays a role in the development of atherosclerosis. Visceral fat accumulation is an important component of various metabolic disorders including glucose intolerance, dyslipidemia, and hypertension, which correlate with atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease. The aim of the present study was to compare the postprandial response of various metabolic parameters, blood pressure, adiponectin, and oxidative stress to 75-g oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT) in men with (n = 23) and without (n = 7) abdominal obesity based on waist circumference (WC) cutoff value of 85 cm (based on the Japanese criteria for the metabolic syndrome).

It is shown that 21 ABX(3) perovskites with tilted BX(6) octahedra and layered ordering of A cations can be generated on the basis of group-subgroup relations. These structures (with 16 different space groups) are classified into ten diffraction types in terms of the conditions for superstructure reflections caused by the ordering of A cations, tilting of BX(6) octahedra and structural absences. SAED (selected-area electron diffraction) allows the distinction of seven of the 21 different perovskites, while additional symmetry analysis by CBED (convergent-beam electron diffraction) is needed for the remaining 14 structures.

We have demonstrated that adiponectin has anti-atherosclerotic properties. We also reported hypoadiponectinemia and nocturnal reduction in circulating adiponectin concentrations in patients of severe obstructive sleep apnea-hypopnea syndrome (OSAS). OSAS is often complicated with pulmonary hypertension.

In an evoked magnetic field of magnetoencephalography a wave form is calculated by averaging. We propose that the wave form is deterministic in the case of 5 Hz periodical stimuli. We have found with statistical accuracy that the wave form of a somatosensory evoked magnetic field is deterministic in 5 Hz periodical median nerve stimuli, since any stationary process is decomposed into a deterministic part and a nondeterministic part from the Wold decomposition theorem.

Prolamins, a group of rice (Oryza sativa) seed storage proteins, are synthesized on the rough endoplasmic reticulum (ER) and deposited in ER-derived type I protein bodies (PB-Is) in rice endosperm cells. The accumulation mechanism of prolamins, which do not possess the well-known ER retention signal, remains unclear. In order to elucidate whether the accumulation of prolamin in the ER requires seed-specific factors, the subcellular localization of the constitutively expressed green fluorescent protein fused to prolamin (prolamin-GFP) was examined in seeds, leaves, and roots of transgenic rice plants.

A simultaneous determination of sulfamonomethoxine, sulfadimethoxine, and their hydroxy/N(4)-acetyl metabolites in chicken plasma, muscle, liver, and eggs using gradient high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) with a photo-diode array detector is developed. All the compounds are extracted by a handheld ultrasonic homogenizer with ethanol followed by centrifugation. The separation is performed by a reversed-phase C4 column with a gradient elution (ethanol:1% (v/v) acetic acid, v/v; 10:90-->20:80).

Objects: The aim of this paper was to identify factors affecting the urgency of nursing home placement after introduction of public long-term care insurance.

Methods: The subjects were families including at least one disabled elderly person and one another family member in two cities in Chugoku Prefecture. The measure of the urgency of placement was 0 if the family did not submit any application for placement, 1 if the care managers judged that the elderly person should enter in the future when she/he really needs placement, 2 if the care managers judged that she/he might be able to wait for a short while, and 3 if the care managers judged that she/he should enter as early as possible.

Hordatines A and B, the strong antifungal compounds in barley (Hordeum vulgare), are biosynthesized from p-coumaroyl- and feruloyl-CoA and agmatine by two successive reactions catalyzed by agmatine coumaroyltransferase (ACT) and peroxidase. ACT catalyzes the formation of agmatine conjugates (p-coumaroylagmatine and feruloylagmatine) from precursor CoAs and agmatine, and peroxidase catalyzes the oxidative coupling of agmatine conjugates to form hordatines. Our previous study demonstrated that the short arm of barley chromosome 2H (2HS) is responsible for the biosynthesis of hordatines.

Attributing behavioral outcomes correctly to oneself or to other agents is essential for all productive social exchange. We approach this issue in high-functioning males with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) using two separate fMRI paradigms. First, using a visual imagery task, we extract a basis set for responses along the cingulate cortex of control subjects that reveals an agent-specific eigenvector (self eigenmode) associated with imagining oneself executing a specific motor act.

Previous reports demonstrated that adiponectin has antiatherosclerotic properties. Obstructive sleep apnea-hypopnea syndrome (OSAHS) is reported to exacerbate atherosclerotic diseases. We investigated nocturnal alternation of serum adiponectin levels before sleep and after wake-up in OSAHS patients and the effect of sustained hypoxia on adiponectin in vivo and in vitro.

Musclin is a novel skeletal muscle-derived secretory factor, whose mRNA level is markedly regulated by nutritional status. In the present study, we investigated the mechanism of musclin mRNA regulation by insulin. In C2C12 myocytes, insulin-induced upregulation of musclin mRNA was significantly decreased by treatment of phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase (PI3K) inhibitor, LY294002, and was abolished in C2C12 myocytes stably expressing a constitutively active Foxo1 (Foxo1-3A), suggesting the involvement of Foxo1 in the regulation of musclin mRNA.
