Objectives: Extrapyramidal symptoms (EPS) are one of the most prominent side effects of haloperidol. Variability of EPS severity may be associated with the genetic factors, affecting both haloperidol pharmacokinetics (e.g.

The article is devoted to the work of the Moscow Research Institute of Psychiatry to improve psychiatric care for patients with psychotic disorders. An important feature of this work was an integrated approach, in which the clinical picture of the disease was assessed in close connection with the patient's personal and psychological characteristics, social conditions of his life, therapeutic opportunities, rehabilitation potential and organizational structure of care. The article reflects the results of many years of work of the department of outpatient psychiatry and the organization of psychiatric care under the guidance of Professor I.

These deficits are present in the prodromal phase, throughout the illness and in first-degree relatives. They are considered in the framework of neurodevelopmental or neurodegenerative models as well as candidates for endophenotypes of schizophrenia.

Methods: Patients with MDR tuberculosis starting second-line drug treatment were enrolled in a prospective cohort study. Sputum cultures were analyzed at a central reference laboratory.
Objective: To compare trends in direct annual risk of tuberculous infection (ARTI) during 1991-2005 in relation to tuberculosis (TB) incidence and to indirect estimates of ARTI derived from the prevalence of tuberculin skin test (TST) positivity in schoolchildren in Orel Oblast, Russia.
Design: In 2005, we abstracted annual TST results and vaccination histories from a representative sample of schoolchildren in Orel Oblast, Russia, where bacille Calmette-Guerin (BCG) vaccination and annual TST of children are nearly universal. We calculated direct ARTI based on the percentage of children tested with TST conversions each year, excluding conversions following BCG vaccination.
Background: Increasing access to drugs for the treatment of multidrug-resistant (MDR) tuberculosis is crucial but could lead to increasing resistance to these same drugs. In 2000, the international Green Light Committee (GLC) initiative began to increase access while attempting to prevent acquired resistance.
Methods: To assess the GLC's impact, we followed adults with pulmonary MDR tuberculosis from the start to the end of treatment with monthly sputum cultures, drug susceptibility testing, and genotyping.

Setting: Joint World Health Organization (WHO) projects in Vladimir and Orel regions, Russia.
Objective: To study the prevalence of extensively drug-resistant (XDR) tuberculosis (TB).
Methods: Drug susceptibility testing of second-line drugs (ofloxacin, kanamycin, capreomycin, ethionamide, cycloserine and para-aminosalicylic acid) was performed on isolates from multidrug-resistant TB cases from 1 January to 31 December 2006.

Pharmacokinetics of an original compound GB-115 (N-phenylhexanoylglycyltryptophan) synthesized on the basis of the structure of endogenous tetrapeptide cholecystokinin-4 was studied by means of high-performance liquid chromatography. Pharmacokinetic parameters were calculated after intravenous and peroral administration of GB-115. Our results indicate that this dipeptide is resistant to peptidases.

Setting: Orel, Russia.
Objective: To evaluate outcomes of tuberculosis (TB) patients treated in the first year of a TB control demonstration project using a revised strategy of directly observed treatment, short-course (DOTS). Standard methods recommended by World Health Organization (WHO) were adapted to include mycobacterial cultures.
The kinetics and extent of the simian rotavirus SA 11 (RV) inactivation by low concentrations of hydrogen peroxide (HP) were determined. The curves illustrating the kinetics of crude virus inactivation have "tailing off". The inactivation of the purified virus runs according to the first-order kinetics.
