Benzo(a)pyrene (B(a)P), which is the most studied member of PAH family is released into the environment (air, water and soil) from natural and man-made sources including industrial and automobile exhaust fumes. Since B(a)P is an omnipresent environmental pollutant and is believed to be a risk factor for human chemical carcinogenesis, it is important to identify potent naturally occurring/synthetic agents that could modulate B(a)P-induced toxicity. The present study explores the effect of the flavonoid silymarin (2.

Article Synopsis
  • The study focuses on the link between p53 gene variations and breast cancer risk in South Indian women.
  • Genotyping of 100 women (50 with breast cancer and 50 controls) examined specific p53 polylorphisms and mutations.
  • Findings revealed no significant association between the p53 variants and breast cancer risk, although mutations in exon 7 codon 249 were more common in patients, particularly among those exposed to pollution.

The protective effect of hydroxytyrosol (HT), a strong antioxidant compound from extra virgin olive oil, against TCDD induced toxicity was investigated in human peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC). PBMC (1 × 10(6)cellsmL(-1)) were divided into four groups and were incubated in a CO(2) incubator (5% CO(2)) for 12h with vehicle, TCDD (10 nM), TCDD+HT (10 nM+100 μM) and HT alone (100 μM) respectively. To clarify the role of HT against TCDD induced cytotoxicity, oxidative stress and the levels of antioxidant enzymes were assessed.

Benzo(a)pyrene (B(a)P), a member of the polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon family is present ubiquitously in the environment. One of its toxic effects is induction of oxidative stress (mediated by the enzyme B(a)P hydroxylase) which leads to various diseases like cancer. Olive oil (OO) that consists of many antioxidant compounds is reported to have many beneficial properties including protection against cancer.
