A 49-year-old female patient presented with mass occluding her external auditory meatus. Surgical exploration revealed that the mass eroded the bony canal wall and biopsy reported the mass as a schwannoma. Schwannoma should be considered in the differential diagnosis of a soft tissue swelling arising from the external auditory canal.

Purpose: A multitude of developmental anomalies has been reported in the head and neck, especially on the face; however, cases of upper lip sinuses and fistulas have hardly been reported.

Method: A 10-year-old girl presented with a recurrently discharging upper lip sinus. After adequate presurgical workup, excision of the lesion resulted in a clinical cure.

Objective: The purpose of this study was to determine the association of socioeconomic factors on use of cardioprotective medicines in known coronary heart disease (CHD) or stroke in South Asia.

Methods: We enrolled 33,423 subjects aged 35-70 years (women 56%, rural 53%, low education 51%, low household wealth 25%) in 150 communities in India, Pakistan and Bangladesh during 2003-2009. Information regarding socioeconomic status, disease conditions and treatments was recorded.

Background: Despite the rising burden of chronic respiratory diseases, global data for lung function are not available. We investigated global variation in lung function in healthy populations by region to establish whether regional factors contribute to lung function.

Methods: In an international, community-based prospective study, we enrolled individuals from communities in 17 countries between Jan 1, 2005, and Dec 31, 2009 (except for in Karnataka, India, where enrolment began on Jan 1, 2003).

Objective: Abnormalities of the third branchial arch are less common than those of the second arch and usually present with left thyroid lobe inflammation. This paper describes 15 cases of pyriform sinus fistulae of third branchial arch origin usually presenting as recurrent thyroid abscess on the left side.

Method: A retrospective review of 15 cases of third arch fistulae managed 2000 and 2008, diagnosed based on histopathology and radiological evidence of a fistulous tract, and treated with fistulectomy with left hemithyroidectomy.
