Ethical considerations related to virtual visiting for families and critically ill patients in intensive care: a qualitative descriptive study.

Background: During the COVID-19 pandemic, virtual visiting technologies were rapidly integrated into the care offered by intensive care units (ICUs) in the UK and across the globe. Today, these technologies offer a necessary adjunct to in-person visits for those with ICU access limited by geography, work/caregiving commitments, or frailty. However, few empirical studies explore the ethical issues associated with virtual visiting.

Using Mixed Reality Simulation to Improve Junior Medical Trainees' Preparedness to Manage High-Acuity Trauma.

High-acuity trauma necessitates experienced and rapid intervention to prevent patient harm. However, upskilling junior trainees through hands-on management of real trauma cases is rarely feasible without compromising patient safety. This quality education report sought to investigate whether a simulation course operated via mixed reality (MR) headset devices (Microsoft HoloLens) could enhance the clinical knowledge recall and preparedness to practice of junior trainees with no prior experience managing trauma.

Combined upper lid skin crease and endoscopic approach to frontal sinus mucocoeles.

Purpose: This case series describes the ophthalmic manifestations of frontal sinus mucoceles and reports the long-term surgical outcomes of a combined endoscopic and upper-lid skin crease drainage approach carried out jointly with otorhinolaryngology.

Methods: We present a retrospective case review of 18 orbits and 15 patients presenting with frontal sinus mucocoeles, all of whom underwent drainage via an adapted anterior orbitotomy approach between January 2015 and July 2023. Data collection included preoperative and postoperative examination findings (visual acuity, extraocular motility, lid retraction, and lagophthalmos), mucocoele recurrence, cosmetic satisfaction, and surgical complications.

The risk of development and progression of diabetic retinopathy in a group of ethnically diverse pregnant women with diabetes attending three regional Diabetic Eye Screening Programs in the UK.

Background/objectives: Currently, all pregnant women with diabetes are asked to attend screening at least twice during pregnancy, even if no retinopathy is detected in early pregnancy. We hypothesise that for women with no diabetic retinopathy in early pregnancy, the frequency of retinal screening may be safely reduced.

Subjects/methods: In this retrospective cohort study, data for 4718 pregnant women attending one of three UK Diabetic Eye Screening (DES) Programmes between July 2011 and October 2019 was extracted.

Frontal sinus mucocele with orbital extension drained via a combined upper lid skin crease and endoscopic approach.

This case report discusses the ophthalmic complications of frontal sinus mucoceles and describes the favorable long-term surgical outcomes of a combined endoscopic and upper-lid skin crease drainage approach carried out jointly with otorhinolaryngology. A 47-year-old single mother presented to eye casualty with markedly swollen eyelids and visual acuity of 6/6 in the left eye, no perception of light in the right. Ophthalmic examination revealed right-sided hypoglobus and proptosis with exposure keratopathy inferiorly.

Proning related bilateral anterior ischaemic optic neuropathy in a patient with COVID-19 related acute respiratory distress syndrome.

Background: Non-arteritic ischaemic optic neuropathy (NAION) is a rare but harmful complication of prone positioning. Prone mechanical ventilation is a therapeutic strategy which has been used extensively during the COVID-19 pandemic to treat acutely hypoxemic patients with COVID-19 related acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). Though a small number of cases of unilateral NAION have been reported in patients testing positive for the SARS-CoV-2 virus, we describe what is to our knowledge, the first reported case of bilateral NAION occurring in a patient proned extensively for the treatment of COVID-19 related ARDS.

Barriers, motivators and facilitators of physical activity in people with dementia and their family carers in England: dyadic interviews.

Introduction: Physical activity may have a number of physical and mental health benefits for people with dementia and their carers. However, there is limited evidence about factors that influence physical activity participation in these groups. This study therefore looks at the barriers, facilitators and motivators of physical activity in people with dementia, from both the perspective of the person with dementia and their carer.

Rapid Zygosity Determination Using Digital PCR.

Background: Paternal zygosity testing is used for determining homo- or hemizygosity of in pregnancies that are at a risk of hemolytic disease of the fetus and newborn. At present, this is achieved by using real-time PCR or the PCR, which can be difficult to interpret and unreliable, particularly for black African populations.

Methods: DNA samples extracted from 53 blood donors were analyzed using 2 multiplex reactions for -specific targets against a reference () to determine gene dosage by digital PCR.

A robust and reproducible human pluripotent stem cell derived model of neurite outgrowth in a three-dimensional culture system and its application to study neurite inhibition.

The inability of neurites to grow and restore neural connections is common to many neurological disorders, including trauma to the central nervous system and neurodegenerative diseases. Therefore, there is need for a robust and reproducible model of neurite outgrowth, to provide a tool to study the molecular mechanisms that underpin the process of neurite inhibition and to screen molecules that may be able to overcome such inhibition. In this study a novel in vitro pluripotent stem cell based model of human neuritogenesis was developed.
