Historical mining towns face financial challenges with the proposed Soil Monitoring Law of the European Union, which will require the management of soil contamination, since remediating soil in densely populated towns and cities is challenging. We compared the environmental impact of sulfide ore mining in the urban area of Outokumpu in Finland with that of other European sites, focusing on soil contamination. Soil sampling revealed that mine tailings were historically used in road construction.

Chronic exposure to arsenic may be detrimental to health. We investigated the behaviour, remediation and risk management of arsenic in Freiberg, Germany, characterized by past mining activities, and near Verdun in France, where World War I ammunition was destroyed. We report the trace element status of residents living in areas with naturally sulphide-rich bedrock and soil in two municipalities in Finland, Sotkamo and Kaavi. Altogether, 225 people from these sparsely populated regions participated voluntarily by providing hair and blood samples. The concentrations of calcium, zinc and copper in serum as well as selenium and cadmium in whole blood did not show correlation with those concentrations in hair samples.
