In lactic acidosis, lactate can only explain 30% of the variance in the anion gap (AG), and the elevated AG not explained by lactate is due to unmeasured organic anions (UOAs). Some studies using less precise surrogates for UOA have suggested that UOA may predict clinical outcomes better than lactate. The aim of this study was to determine whether UOA predicts clinical outcomes better than lactate levels.

Article Synopsis
  • Patients with end-stage kidney disease (ESKD) are at high risk for severe COVID-19, and the safety of remdesivir in this group was studied due to limited prior data.
  • A retrospective study analyzed 486 hospitalized dialysis patients, comparing those treated with remdesivir to those who were not, focusing on 30-day mortality and other health outcomes.
  • Results showed no higher risks of liver injury or ICU admissions in remdesivir-treated patients, and there was a trend suggesting lower 30-day mortality with the drug.
