Functional Near-Infrared Spectroscopy (fNIRS) holds transformative potential for research and clinical applications in neuroscience due to its non-invasive nature and adaptability to real-world settings. However, despite its promise, fNIRS signal quality is sensitive to individual differences in biophysical factors such as hair and skin characteristics, which can significantly impact the absorption and scattering of near-infrared light. If not properly addressed, these factors risk biasing fNIRS research by disproportionately affecting signal quality across diverse populations.

Healthy aging is associated with structural and functional brain changes. However, cognitive abilities differ from one another in how they change with age: whereas executive functions, like working memory, show age-related decline, aspects of linguistic processing remain relatively preserved (Hartshorne et al., 2015).

Purpose: This study investigated treatment-induced performance gains in memory function following therapy through the Intensive Cognitive Communication Rehabilitation (ICCR) program for young adults with acquired brain injury (ABI). We aimed to determine the utility of a novel approach to measuring memory performance improvement across semesters of therapy using (a) systematic treatment tasks called Individualized Quantitative Protocols (IQPs) as compared to (b) standardized measures of memory function.

Method: Retrospective IQP data spanning five consecutive ICCR semesters were collected from patients ( = 13) with ABI.

We propose a lesion-aware graph neural network (LEGNet) to predict language ability from resting-state fMRI (rs-fMRI) connectivity in patients with post-stroke aphasia. Our model integrates three components: an edge-based learning module that encodes functional connectivity between brain regions, a lesion encoding module, and a subgraph learning module that leverages functional similarities for prediction. We use synthetic data derived from the Human Connectome Project (HCP) for hyperparameter tuning and model pretraining.

Article Synopsis
  • Tulving defined semantic memory as a large storehouse of meanings crucial for language and cognition, prompting various fields to research it with unique methods and terms.
  • The varied interpretations of key concepts like "concept" across disciplines create confusion, contributing to the replication crisis in psychology and impacting communication and theory development.
  • To address these issues, a multidisciplinary semantic glossary is being developed to provide clear definitions and foster shared understanding among researchers while acknowledging the challenges of bias and prescriptiveness.

The epidemiological transition caused a significant non-communicable disease burden in all countries, including India. It can be tackled appropriately by integrating pharmacological and non-pharmacological interventions. The outcome of the disease or control status related to the disease condition depends significantly on patient education.

The opportunistic use of radiological examinations for disease detection can potentially enable timely management. We assessed if an index created by an AI software to quantify chest radiography (CXR) findings associated with heart failure (HF) could distinguish between patients who would develop HF or not within a year of the examination. Our multicenter retrospective study included patients who underwent CXR without an HF diagnosis.

Introduction: Pleural effusion is due to the pathological accumulation of pleural fluid in the pleural space, 25%-30% of which may remain undiagnosed despite the combination of biochemical, microbiological, and pathological tests and closed pleural biopsy. Medical thoracoscopy may help physicians diagnose such cases. We aimed to study the diagnostic yield of medical thoracoscopy in patients with undiagnosed exudative pleural effusion and assess the safety profile of the medical thoracoscopy.

Hearing one's own speech allows for acoustic self-monitoring in real time. Left-hemisphere motor planning regions are thought to give rise to efferent predictions that can be compared to true feedback in sensory cortices, resulting in neural suppression commensurate with the degree of overlap between predicted and actual sensations. Sensory prediction errors thus serve as a possible mechanism of detection of deviant speech sounds, which can then feed back into corrective action, allowing for online control of speech acoustics.

Introduction: Silent pauses are regarded as integral components of the temporal organization of speech. However, it has also been hypothesized that they serve as markers for internal cognitive processes, including word access, monitoring, planning, and memory functions. Although existing evidence across various pathological populations underscores the importance of investigating silent pauses' characteristics, particularly in terms of frequency and duration, there is a scarcity of data within the domain of post-stroke aphasia.
