Carnosine can accept hydrogen ions (H), making it an important intramuscular buffer against exercise-induced acidosis. Metabolite accumulation rate increases when exercising in hypoxic conditions, thus an increased carnosine concentration could attenuate H build-up when exercising in hypoxic conditions.
